  • Nanaimo -- The Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club has inducted a new "Honourary Member", after a defibrillator saved a member's life on the green.
Gene Cote had just won a tournament when he suffered a heart attack. Cote collapsed in front of friends and fellow members. He was attended to instantly, one man ran straight for the senior's centre next door to grab an Automated External Defibrillator.
Members say the defibrillator saved their friends life.
Gene is on the way to a full recovery at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. He's being prepared for surgery where he's have a pacemaker and fibrillator implanted.
Since 2008 Nanaimo has installed eleven AED devices. They've saved three lives. The City has spent more than 20-thousand dollars on the purchase and installation of the units.
The lawn bowling club says it will now purchase it's own AED device and will have it installed by next spring
