From Switzerland With Love - Glycine Golden Eye Combat Sub Automatic Watch Full Review

- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- Over Christmas last year, I was lent a Glycine Combat Sub to Review by the lovely people at Salesman's Watches. I was so impressed by the watch, that as soon as I could I ordered my own to keep. However I did not get just any Combat sub, I got the "Golden Eye"!! Glycine are famous for making the iconic Airman, but this quality Swiss heritage brand are highly overlooked when it comes to the rest of their collection of watches. The Combat sub is the prime example of excellent rugged diver with a ultra useable design based around one the most reliable and accurate modified ETAs I have yet experienced.

Absolutely beautiful watch! And 0:00 to 0:25 the best watch intro I've seen yet
Have been eyeing the Glycine Combat Sub for quite some time now. Being an owner of a Glycine Airman, I kind of know what to expect in terms of quality from the brand. I know your video is five years old, but it made me finally pull the trigger on the Golden Eye. So far am loving it, the thinness of the case and the dial design. It edges out my old Seamaster Pro 300m in terms of slimness for a dive watch. My other dive watches seems relatively thick when placed side by side with this. I also placed mines on a black mesh strap and it is absolutely stunning. The dial design, color combination, case shape makes it a winner. A con for this watch would be the lume. Am still not decided on the 60 click bezel as its not really a con but it is different. I didnt consider it a con because it lines up (on my watch at least) and bezel play is nonexistent. Time will tell if the bezel action holds up. So far this watch is a winner even if it is priced in pre-Invicta prices but all the more now that they are agressively priced. Too bad Glycine has taken a bad rep because of Invicta but I guess thats good for us watch lovers. Thanks TVG for helping me decide on the golden eye. I wonder if you did keep your Glycine Combat Sub.
Bought this watch a week ago, after seeing this review...
It's an amazing watch.
Bought it straight from Glycine factory, in Bienne, and got a 20% discount (it costed me around the 750$ mark).
I am super pleased with the watch. Super slim, classy and gorgeous looking...
Keep up the good work!
Cheers
You really know how to compliment watches with the right band, that mesh looks great in the glycine.
+Mtalll1 Thank you! :D
Best regards,
TGV
I hope you kept it!! What a wonderful watch and what a respectful company!!!
Rewatching this years later and the glycine is still such an amazing watch. Now they have the 40mm(39mm) version along with a 36mm version.
I don't think watch enthusiasts have ever had it so good at the moment. Seriously good quality pieces that really make you question why you would ever spend 1000's on the higher tier. Another great vid cheers.... Alex.W.
+magicrising LOL, too kind my friend.
Thank you Alex!
Best regards,
TGV
Thanks to you, I got my Combat Sub in green bezel. Love it! The best value for money military diver watch to date.
After months and months and months of tedious research, I finally pulled the trigger and bought this as my first watch. No regrets. She’s even more beautiful in person.
Thanks so much for the multi-faceted approach to a quite wide range of time pieces. Much appreciated.
I have a modest collection, as my lifetime collection was stolen a while back. I wanted to at least get a special watch for my 24 y.o. son's upcoming birthday. After viewing many of your excellent videos, I decided to bypass the new 'Made in Japan' Orients and got the following blue Glycine Combat watch. But then I feared I had blundered on the purchase, the specs are so different from what I've heard you describe. Sooooo.....here goes> Glycine Men's 3916.18S LBK8 Combat 6 Automatic 36mm Blue Dial Blue Leather Watch...Brand Glycine

The MSRP was listed as $1,250 and I negotiated to a final price of $470. It was listed as new, with tags, etc.My son is 6' 3" tall and a trim, but big guy. His wrists are not much bigger than yours. When I saw the 36mm spec and others, I got worried that I maybe made a big mistake. Since I have grown to respect your assessments and knowledge, I suppose I was looking for an experienced enthusiast's opinion of my [maybe impulsive] purchase. Thanks so much. [I'll get the next one from Saltzman's, of course, as I grew up in Boston...about a half hour from the store in Rhode Island.] Just break it to me gently...and I hope you won't be forced to consult with Frederico on this embarrassing matter. [I have no money left for his consultation fees!!!! lol]
I'm grateful for this...and all you've done. Gary K.
Wow! I have that Golden eye and I put that same mesh band from Holbens on it. Bought as an EDC beater watch but after seeing it in person has been added to my dress watch collection. It is just so thin, so dressy, so slides under any sleeve, and exudes class. It is a keeper! Don't sell it!! Sean Connery In a tux would look well dressed with this watch with or without a PPK in his other hand. This is the dress Diver of the century. Hell it is the ONLY Dress diver out there! Best value out there! I am going to order another one, or two just so I can have backups. And to think this was supposed to be a replacement for my EDC beater watch, a Hamilton Titanium Khaki Field PVD. Guess I have to wear the Hamilton a while yet. Not complaining as the Hamilton is a damn fine watch.
Scott Massie do you still have it and still love it?
Cool I've been looking for a black mesh, thanks for pointing me in the right place :)
Heres one for you
...
How about a review of the watches in The Big Short !
Just purchased a combat sub and totally fell in love with it, can’t take it off! By far the most comfortable automatic diver I have ever worn. Great watch !
Fantastic review as always my friend. I'd say keep it. The Goldeneye is unlike anything else in your collection. You know me I'm a sucker for the unique and out there designs.
+JustinMiles17 That is very true, you have a very articular taste, I only just noticed, I like that!
Takes balls to be different.
Thank you Justin,
Best regards,
TGV
You have my wife's logic, T... You're "saving" us 30%... Something she would say, I'm the one who has to tell her that we're still paying 70%. ;)
+Timepiece Addict LOL Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Do you know the technical differences between a stock ETA 2824-2 movement and the GL224? At a cursory glance, there don't really seem to be any. I see a signed rotor, and what appears to be a single blued screw at the rear most rotor bridge assembly. Is this pretty much it?
I don’t know how I feel about the PVD coating on the case but the rest of the watch is amazing
I have a Glycine Combat Sub, simply great watch!
That glycine is growing on me big time, could end up on my wrist sooner than later! Great video T!
Matt.
+Matt H Thank you Matt!
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry can you review the combat chronograph please
I just saw this video tonight and ordered the watch and the Holben mesh band. Exquisite. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
Lovely opening, TGV!
+Chaim Magal Thank you :D
Best regards,
TGV
Great to see reviews of decent watches and not more Steinhart crap.
Just picked up a goldeneye in 46mm. Can't believe how thin and light it is for its size.
Ordered a Combat Sub from Massdrop. I don’t know if the quality has changed with Invicta ownership. Also it’s the first time I’ve bought a watch through Massdrop. The thinness is the selling feature on the watch for me. Thanks for the review.
lovely watch! works really good with the aftermarket bracelet nice vid!
+Bryan Verhage Thank you Bryan,
Best regards,
TGV
nice review TGV! that strap perfectly matches the watch, good choice!!! cant wait for the 2016 straps video! cheers!!!
+hellotabasco Thank you, working on it now ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
just bought mine. beautiful watch thanks for the vid.
Received my Glycine Combat Sub (brownish bezel, black dial ) a few weeks ago. I absolutely love it. Love the thinness, the vintage military style dial and the overall fit on my wrist. It is such a sophisticated piece. The only thing I find disappointing is the lume: takes forever to charge and after that it works for 15 minutes or so.
I love Glycine Combat, I've got pre-invicta two years ago.
Did you film the shots at the very beginning yourself? Very nicely done if so, I would very much like to see more of that stuff from you.
+vladu789 Yes, everything is shot by me. I takes a whole afternoon to do but I am getting quicker.
Thank you btw, time permitting I will always do as much as I can.
Best regards,
TGV
Glycine made a really cool stealth version of the combat sub.
+Alan D Almost went for the one too!!! Very cool, thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
This was the no time to die smp300 before it even existed.
Does TGV not like Glycines anymore? I saw a few reviews from back in 2015 and this is the only other one I can find.
I own a Combat Sub and absolutely love it! Amazingly reliable and perfect size. It’s been everywhere with me ..
I checked Saltzman and their website is sad and slow and they had no Glycine'ss to sell?
Glycine's are such a beauties.
Because of the "BRASS" steampunk comes to mind.
Thanks for the review, and that 30% discount helps with the Canadian dollar being so awful. I'm getting the blue dial/orange bezel one!
+Alexandre Misson Niiiice! Almost went for that one myself.
Enjoy it.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Nice review! As usual well done :) Love Glycine Combat, but I personally prefer the other one You have. This is too dark to me, but it's great watch. Don't get me wrong :)
The style of Glycine is one of my favorites. Bigger diameter than 40mm, and because of it's thickness looks very elegant and solid at ones. It's very far from the aspect of some wrist "water flow-meters"... hahaha... that some guys are wearing.
Ones again - Great job with this review! As usual actually :)
Glycine combat is an amazing watch. They hit all the marks. Can be found sub $400 on the gray market. Amazing amazing. And so thin. OMG. I've been following Glycine for quite a long time.
Thanks for the videos...would love if you could give any feedback or reviews on the Oris Diver 65.....Thanks again
+Bizznichw Would LOVE to, I think a viewer will be sending it for review this coming month.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
30% off??! Darn it Man, you're hard on my watch budget. I really, REALLY like the Golden Eye - the black and bronze go so well together and set off the watch from the competition. Fair comment on the hands too - it'd be nice to see a bit more differentiation between them would be nice. Does look great on the mesh too. Thanks for the review! Oh and keep it! You need it as your "wild card". Ciao, John
+John Price LOL ;-)
Sorry old chap!
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
30% off??! TGV, they're going to sell out lol. Great review as always. Love that goldeneye!
Wow! Is this still valid? I think I'm going to call them tomorrow.
so is it ?
roepetoepa so ?
Jomashop has them for 425-475 honestly guys just do your research and price checking rather than wait on a guy to comment.
Bader Altayyar هذا الموديل نفسه ؟
I have fallen in love with this watch
its only $319 on jomashop now
Great review! I just ordered my Glycine Combat Sub (Golden Eye) after watching it (it was a difficult decision, had to skip on the Mido Ocean Star Captain V Titanium). :)
I also wanted to ask you about the black bracelet from the review, cause I love the combo with the Combat Sub and would like to get the same bracelet. Could you give me some info from where to get or for some cheaper alternative, if this one is too pricey? Thanks!
Really enjoyed the opening of the video. I am impressed with how thin the Glycine is. Cheers.
+Bob FromBrisbane Thank you Bob,
Puts even a few dress watches to shame!
Best regards,
TGV
the lume on my combat sub is the same on the casio duro. it sucks. i dont believe it was ever a $1000+ watch.
It looks Tudorish!
The muted earth tones of this watch would go perfectly with an Al Gore-based wardrobe.
Can we have a take on Glycine now in 2020. I want to buy them --do they have the same guts and quality?
As a watchmaker myself, I can say that they are still quite a high quality watch with the same movement as before and the finishing is quite excellent as well. I have one that was purchased only a week ago.
Another Great Review! Like the other Glycine you have. I think it had some Orange color in it.
+Tim Vrklan Thank you Tim, I liked it too!!!! The trouble is I want them all!!!! ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
Based on your review I recently got a Combat sub. I like the looks and love the thinness! Two disappointments though. They don’t have drilled lugs anymore and the lume doesn’t last at all. But it keeps good time and it wears well on my small wrist. Overall I’m proud of it. Thanks for the review.
Absolutely stunning piece, hope you'll keep it in your collection TGV. As always, all the very best from Poland
How this mesh band calls?
I want to buy one for my Golden Eye, but don’t know what to choose
Please review the Bronze version (GL0281) of this watch. I do not what to think about the looks and function of the Bronze and would love to hear your opinion.
Love you're videos thank you
+Louis Barnet Very kind of you to say, thank you Louis!!!
Best regards,
TGV
Difference between GL0093 and GL0173?
I adore this watch. Adore.
just beautiful!!! a combat sub will be my purchase for sure this year (my budget allows one watch a year)
+Oscar Cubero Thank Oscar, you will not regret it :D
Best regards,
TGV
it's gorgeous... keep it!
I can't get over all the angst over the watch being 42mm...what is it with these watch reviewers? Man up!...42mm is the same size as the SKX you are always raving about...(a complete piece of garbage versus this watch btw). Sitting there wishing it was 40mm...wtf? Are you getting paid by Seiko or something? I can't wrap my head around your inconsistency. If it was up to you and Mosso we would all be wearing women's watches.
I love this watch its classy
Excellent review of a stunning piece. If you're going to keep doing watch reviews, it would behoove you to invest in some basic lighting equipment. Just using your window, this video was too dark for me, couldn't fully appreciate the watch.
+Mirandu Kan Thanks for watching,
Best regards,
TGV
Great review as always! I was thinking about getting the Steinhart Ocean 2 in white but I am a bit disappointed by the new design. I am now deciding on whether to get the Golden Eye soon or save up for a Tudor Black Bay in blue. Thoughts people?
+Sam Kuang Thanks you. I think its a solid move, either golden eye or BB will not let you down.
Best regards,
TGV
Love the Glycine Combat, except for one thing, 22mm lug width. I need to become a watch designer !
Keep it my friend. If you sell I'll buy it on EBay right away. Don't do it. You'll just buy it back anyway.
I'm thinking of putting a 20mm strap on my combat sub (22mm lugs) what do I need to know ? I'm new to the watch game.
You and me both. Just curious, What do you think of Locman Watches.
Love my Glycine 42
You gotta love but.. I'm probably selling it😂😂😂
What happend to the date on 1 of March 2016? Was it 30th? Every month you have to adjust the time/date? And you have to do it twice otherwise date will change at noon? ;-/
witch model is the golden eye, GL0093 or GL0173? i want to get one but not sure which one.
Anyone know the name of the song in the opening?
Same
You bought the wrong Glycine, you should of bought the one with the large lume numbers, not the one with the pips.
Great review. Glycine is now on my list of watches to get.
Looking good TVG, love Glycine and thanks for introducing the whole company to me. The Golden Eye is beautiful. Glad you are healing up nicely and getting back in the groove after your hospital stay.
After months of negotiation Ive bought the Golden Eye. Thanks for putting this review up, it really sold me on this watch.
Which one is better Glycine combat or Certina DS diver?
What does TGV do for a living, other then UA-cam watch videos of course. I know he does this as a hobby/passion - not for the money, hence why I ask about his day job. thanks in advance.
I think he's an audio engineer, but I'm not 100% sure.
He's a sound engineer.
Now i am utterly confused... first I wanted the SINN 104, then the 1521 and now I want the glycine combat sub... got the money allowance from the miss but I am lost on selection... nudge me ... please
Morten Forsberg Holm my choice ? But the SINN if you can afford it, it doesn’t seem to depreciate
Most likely a Sellita not ETA?
Almost 1 year later, it's $380 on massdrop. So I picked one up. Like TGV said, it's a playful watch.
just got me one in blue/ gold a few days ago. put it on a blue nato strap. looks awesome xD
Hey Gentry what is your wrist size? Im wondering what the Combat Sub would look like on a small wrist like mine.
Just checked. They dont even carry Glycine mate
your welcome my friend, also this watch came at a tough time and lifted your spirts at the time, let it become part of the collection, symbolic piece .
Hi TGV,
What kind of leather nato strap would you recommend for the goldeneye? I just got mine in 2 days ago and I don't know which kind of leather Nato strap would work. Do you have any suggestions?
So what is your opinion about glycine after Invicta bought bought it?
You're killing me mate! First the Squale and now the Golden Eye! At least I got to utilize the discount! Brings my collection up to 8. Good stuff TGV. Thanks.
+D. G. LOL, sorry mate, well at least you will have one killer collection.
Thanks for watching,
Best regards,
TGV
+The Urban Gentry Haha All thanks to you bud. The Glycine should arrive on Friday and I also ordered the pvd mesh bracelet from Holbens. Thanks again!
urban gentry can you review the combat chronograph please
Does saltzmans only ship in the US, or do they ship to europe?
Spectacular intro! It's definitely adds too your amazing already amazing videos. Stunning watch! I must say it's a beautiful piece!
Cheers
DTL
+Dylan Tyler Thank you Dylan :D
Best regards,
TGV
Awesome video and watch. Please install the rubber back back on. It looks so much with it on.
Thank you :D
Best regards,
TGV
The combat subs are rather nice. I remember the video comparing the glycine combat sub with the squale. I was looking to get a squale later this year, but the glycine looks like a better deal. I love the brown and gold colour scheme, very understated. Good stuff.
+BritishRacingGreen Thank you, I certainly could not choose between them, would change my mind every day! ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
I happened to see one on massdrop and picked one up for $390
Have you seen saltzmans reviews? What the hell are you recommending to your viewers?
Interesting news! I just read that Invicta Watch Group now owns Glycine Watches. Read it on Watchuseek and Invicta Watch facebook page. This should be interesting. What do you think Tristano?
Really? I was seriously looking into buying this watch. But Glycine being owned by Invicta just devalues everything.
Jack Cole i saw that too. BUT invicta doesnt physically touch the ones being sold. plus evine.com has a great deal on them under 500.00.
Darn, the brown golden eye is sold out -_-
Jack Cole well i purchased the oris propilot 45mm on evine on black friday for $530.00 instead of glycine. I couldnt be more happy!!
Invicta does nothing to the build so they still have true Glycine quality, although I feel sad for Glycine lowering prices in happy that as a consumer I can now afford to buy 3 combat subs for what previously would have only gotten me one, my $500 post Invicta watch is on exactly the same level of quality as my w $1400 pre Invicta subs
Glycine is still Glycine built
Looks like Saltzmans no longer carries Glycine.
im not sure which one i want more a combat sub or double twelve i keep finding myself looking back and forth on ebay
Easy decision. I now have both.
i don't understand why the prices are so high when 90% of all swis watch brands use the same identical movements. essentially, it simply looks as if, we are paying for the "swiss made" logo, and not actual quality or innovation.
+bob smith Thank you, good question, its a complicated one. I recently tried to put together a modded watch as a projects and before I knew it the production cost ran into the thousands and all it was is a basic Japanese movement. Most of the money goes into the case/finishing, it is a lot harder to make a watch cheaply without half stepping on quality I must admit,
Best regards,
TGV
