Many gymnasts were and are overtrained like Elena. We talk and think about Elena, but nobody talks about all the girls who are disabled or who died in the gym. Artistic gymnastics is a too dangerous sport and shouldn’t be practiced by so many girls as if it was tennis or volleyball.
The danger in gymnastics was one reason I could not succeed in it even though I liked to do some gymnastics and flexibility moves. Now, since there are so many people doing gymnastics, it is not as special as it was in Elena's time. The more people do it, the less special it becomes. (Since there are springs in the floor exercise mats, double aerials are possible for women, and triple aerials for men's tumbling. Double aerials are not possible to do on a hard floor without the extra spring. So, this makes more people able to try even harder, more dangerous aerials.) If one starts learning at 5 or 6, then, it is actually not as difficult later on because one is used to it. Elena seemed soft-spoken and didn't want to say 'No' to that dangerous type of aerial she was being told to practice.

they destroyed her entire life over a sport. not allowed to have her own life as everyone else was allowed to have their own stupid life to make a selfish gain off of her hard work. she is definitely in heaven now with her entire life back and will live on forever for the way it was supposed to be. the rest will burn in hell for what they did to her.
She didn’t blame her coach for this. Pointing out he was as much under pressure as she was to perform. Still if the stories I read are correct he ought to have tried to keep in touch with her after her injury.
It appears clear that her coach KNEW how tired and drained she was. But he kept pushing her. And for what real reason. I believe if he had told the truth he would have said that the intense training was too much for Elena at that time. So why did he keep pushing? ....Seems obvious that is was a cruel personal motive...and 'he' was not going to give in....even if Elena paid the ultimate price, which she did.
Jeez there's such a melancholy coming off her. I know it's the Soviet way with expressions but you can see the exhaustion, the pain and sadness in her eyes. I love watching her on the FX but knowing she was in pain makes it so hard to watch. Who was the girl in the black t shirt? Anyone know?

Lena Mukhina was, unfortunately, a victim of manipulation. She functioned some sort of an automaton during practices. Already over trained, her body went beyond the limits and ended up an invalid. Better for her not to be discovered by that toxic coach. I don't understand why she preferred to remain invalid. That how she perceived it as freedom. She expressed that no one would ever use her. She had had enough. Fame was not her concern, I guess, she preferred to live a normal private life just like the modern day ordinary Russian citizens. Gymnastics made her very much like a slave.
Her father left her, her mother died in a fire when she was 5, the system ate her alive, the system abused of her OUT OF THIS WORLD SKILLS, she was under pressure because they wanted her to be the next Nadia, she was forced to train, she was almost limping for a broken leg, weak because they did not give her enough time to recover to gain weight and strength again. Should I go on?
