Hi, the clients don't have to be in the same domain. Once DHCP is set up, a brand new client that isn't a member of the domain will still be able to lease an IP address, including non Window devices too.
Hi, scope options are additional configuration settings that can be assigned to client devices (automatically). For example: DNS server IP addresses, default gateway etc.
Thanks you so much for you time to create this videos. They was a great help for me back at school, and now when i try to take my ict masters. Keep them comming :-)
Wow, excellent tutorial, thank you Ittaster! Question: If I have an existing router that currently has DHCP enabled, should I first disable it and disconnect the router, then configure the DHCP server in 2012 and reconnect the router?
Hi, yes it's best to disable DHCP in the router first if your test server is going to connect to the same network. Glad you liked the video, great comments, many thanks!
thanks, it's clearly explained, but i have a question if you don't mind, why do we need to put the scope from .1-254, meanwhile we will exclude the first 10 addresses, so why we don't put the pool from 11-254??? thanks in advance.
ahmad abu naser Hi, it's down to IP addressing. The example uses a 'class c' IP address range, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. We cannot begin with '0', because this is the 'network address' and we cannot use '255' which is the 'broadcast address'. 1-254 is the usable address range. We can exclude addresses we don't want to assign to client devices, or not include them in the pool i.e. a scope of 11-254 is another way to do it. Hope this helps, thanks for your comment.
i got that sir, but i'm ding a lab right now, and they put the scope 10.0.0.1 - 254 and after that they exclude the 10.0.0.1 -10, my question was why they put it first in the range and after that they exclude it? thanks in advance Sir,
ahmad abu naser Hi, there are two methods you can adopt. If you were to configure a DHCP scope to issue IP addresses 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.254 those addresses will be issued to your client devices. Any address or addresses you don't want to issue to client devices within that range, you must configure as excluded addresses in DHCP. You can exclude ranges of IP addresses 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.11 for example, or a specific device IP like a printer say 10.0.0.40. Any addresses you exclude won't be issued to client devices. Alternatively you can simply 'miss out' a range of addresses, you could configure a DHCP scope of 10.0.0.20 to 10.0.0.254 for example and the first 20 addresses won't be issued to clients. The first address issued will be 10.0.0.20 and so on....Hope this helpsJon
ahmad abu naser Hi, yes you can do that, it's flexible, it really comes down to the IP addressing scheme you're using, based on the amount of devices you plan to cater for.
Thanks for the video. Quick question if I may. Will the Windows Server 2012's DHCP server assign IP addresses to wireless devices that connect to the Router's Wifi network ? These devices will not be logging in to the domain.
Thanks for the easy tutorial :D my DHCP wouldent give any client computer a ip but i did something wrong in the config of the DHCP so im gonna test it when i get back to work :)
I noticed you client computer was showing limited yellow exclamation mark on the lower left hand corner. Was your client computer not able to connect to the internet after the DHCP configuration? I followed the tutorial, which was excellent, but my clinet computers dont connect to the internet. Why?
+isabella cisneros same problem , i used routing on my domain controller and after i installed DHCP , my clients are not able to connect to the internet .. any suggestion ?
Hi Isabella, i believe you are using oracle virtual box or vmware to run winsvr2012 , please check the wlan driver for the same... i was facing the same issue the issue got resolved after installing lan card driver.
hello, I was wondering. at class my teacher didn't want us to install the active directory domain services and DNS, just work with the DHCP. Can DHCP alone can still give out IP addresses?
Hi, yes the DHCP role is able to issue IP addresses without AD and DNS, in a workgroup setting. However, if there is a DC on the network the server will be treated as a rogue DHCP server and not be able to issue addresses. It would need to be a member of the domain and authorised by AD.
I followed along with this using VirtualBox on MAC OS X 10.7.5. I was able to successfully install this. To test it out on a desktop, however, proved to be unsuccessful. Is there a way to use a separate laptop or desktop to connect to this server created using VirtualBox?
+Queen_Of_Domination Hi, take a look at bridging the VM interface of your server in Virtualbox, this should allow other physical devices to 'see' it, hope this helps.
+ceo4eva Hi, the class A IP address range gives lots of flexibility in terms of how we carve it up and it's perfectly acceptable to do as you suggest. In a live environment it's of course important plan the IP addressing scheme carefully, taking into account different geographical sites etc. And to also to consider subnetting the class A address range to avoid wasting addresses. Many thanks for raising! Jon
I don't understand why cannot you have a DHCP server running and be connected to the internet at the same time? Why can't you connect to the DHCP server and the internet at the same time?
Hi, it's perfectly fine to have a DHCP server and connect to the Internet. You just have to be careful when using a router, because most routers have their own built in DHCP servers too. Running two DHCP servers (unless in a fail over config) will cause issues.
ttttkk2 Hi, your DHCP scope needs to be configured to assign client devices an IP address that's on the same subnet as your server (192.168.x.x) otherwise they won't be able to communicate with the server. For example: If your server's IP address is 192.168.1.1 with a subnet mask 255.255.255.0, your clients could be assigned 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254. This does of course depend on the number of client devices to be catered for, and also any that need to be excluded. Hope this helps.
Hello - I would like to add another scope with a different set of Class C IP addresses. What are the steps to do that? Can it work on the same DHCP server? Thank you :-)
The DHCP server is able to serve more than one scope. You can add a new scope for another IP network. The router and it's config is important as routers do not forward broadcasts by default (which includes DHCP).
Hi, double check the IP address you are specifying for the DNS server is the correct IP address (the one you have assigned to your server) that your are installing ADDS & DNS on in your testing environment.
I had been follow this video instruction. However, I change a few configuration in order to get internet connection - default gateway.(192.168.x.x) ,subnet (255.255.255.0) and for ip (10.1.10.2). Unfortuantely, i get this error "the default gateway is not on the same network segment that is define by the ip adress and subnet mask" . How will i resolve this .. I have disable my dhcp in the router.( i want to have my own dhcp server running in the system instead of running in the router). Thus, i want to have internet connection while running dhcp in the system.. How will I configure that, I use wireless connection.
Hi, you will need to make sure your server, router and workstations are on the same subnet (192.168.0.x) subnet mask (255.255.255.0). Take a look at my IPv4 Addressing video series which goes into more detail.
Hello Sir, could you help me to get internet access after assign TCP/IPv4, as i have problem with that, there is no issue getting internet without setup TCP/IPv4, currently i am using server 2012 R2 in VMware 11 version. Thanks!!!
Rabin Shrestha Hi, if you're not using a proxy server on your network, it should simply be a case of making sure your workstations are assigned the default gateway (your router) and also have DNS resolution from the server. If you're setting up DHCP on the server, check the router isn't also set up as a DHCP server as this will cause issues. Hope that helps.
Thank you very much. Your Video was very helpful. but I am having an issue wonder if you can help me. I have installed DHCP, DNS and Local domain on Windows Server 2012 R2. Configured the DHCP Scop 03, 06, 015. I am able to see my devices that has IP leased to them. however when I do ipconfig. I am missing Default gateway on the server, I manually inserted the Default Gateway, but after a reboot it was changed to 0.0.0.0 automatically. my issue that the Server has Limited Internet Access with yellow exclamation mark. this issue applies to all of computer that are member. under event viewer I don't have any error. Nslookup comes back with correct domain and DNS. dcdiag.exe shows everything passed. Please let me know if you can help me. Thank You for your effort putting this video up and keep up the good job.
+Frank Abbas Hi, check client devices are obtaining their IP addresses from your Windows DHCP server. It doesn't sound like they are, you can confirm by running 'ipconfig / all', check DHCP server address is the correct one . Client devices should also appear within address leases on the server. If all is well there, check you have assigned the scope options to the DHCP scope correctly. 003 (router) is needed to specify the default gateway.
+ittaster Thank you for your quick reply. My client PC(s) are able to obtain IP address and Default Gateway. When I run the ipconfig /all on client's PC I see IP assigned from my domain but no internet. but on the Domain controller which is also the DHCP server Ipconfig /all. returns everything correct expect Default Gateway is 0.0.0.0... have AT&T DSL Internet which already has DHCP and it doesn't allow me to disable it. so I think my issue that I have two DHCP within the environment. Currently I have Configure (03 Router in DHCP) to be the same server that has the DHCP, DNS, and DC I think I need to put a net-gear device in between the AT&T and the Server disable the DHCP on the net-gear and Assign static IP to the Net-gear in my DHCP Server if that makes sense and set 03 in DHCP to the Net-gear Router.
+Frank Abbas Having two DHCP servers as described will cause plenty of issues. If you're unable to disable DHCP on the router, but still want the Windows Server to be the DHCP server to your client PCs, you will need to add some form of routing device between the Internet router and the Windows network.
+Shoeb Elias Hi, check the client PCs are being issued the correct IP addresses using 'ipconfig', also check the windows firewall config allows ping (ICMP).
+ittaster thanks for ur response. i found the actual problem which was the subnet mask was not correct. solved it. so dhcp and physical server subnet mask has to be same range to connect to client pc.

Yinwen Xuan Hi, you may need to refresh the screen to show client device address leases first time around.
HI, can I set the scope as 10.x.x.x if my server ip is 192.168.x.x?

For example: If your server's IP address is 192.168.1.1 with a subnet mask 255.255.255.0, your clients could be assigned 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254.
