About once every year my bank calls and wants to tell me about their "services." I politely tell them, "Thank you but I don't borrow money." The silence on the other end of the phone is deafening. The last caller actually had me clarify by asking, "what do you mean you don't borrow money?" It's so weird to not be in debt that the average bank employee doesn't understand plain English.

@MarkC...naw, they're Americans. I deal with a NE regional bank not one of the mega banks.

Had a similar experience when paying money into my bank, they obviously saw how much money I had saved, assumed it was for a house deposit and asked if I wanted a mortgage, politely declined and paid cash for a modest home the next year.

This is the basis of all problems in America. Prioritization should be an imperative part of the education system. Yet its nowhere to be found on any curriculum.
Instead the mantra is: Get these fools out into the system quickly and get them into crushing debt as swiftly as possible.

I must be in the frugal mode for too long. This sense of prioritization comes natural to me whenever a decision that costs money is made. That's probably why everyone around me keeps telling me that I need to do something about my 21-yr old car (e.g. junk it).
There are still lots of work to be done on the income side and find my calling. Never thought finding my passion can be so difficult.

I drive my 20 yr old truck everyday very proudly. It cost me 1k three years ago! Haha. My wife drives a used but uber nice Porsche and our net worth is twice what it should be at our age. 29 and 27 respectively. I can buy whatever I want, but luckily I like old beat up trucks lol

TBH the "Old" cars nowadays (90's ect, anything after 96 HAS TO have OBD2 in it (standardized codes in other words, a bit easier to tell if the mechanic is lying/ a way to do some mechanics yourself)) are perfectly good to drive forever practically. If I recall correctly cars have been mandated to have airbags since about 1991. (A 1998 isn't a bad car either. Probably still cheap on the maintenance as well depending on what it is.)

MarkCEO09 do you even Dave Ramsey? The entire basis of his entire financial advice is to reach the final goal of being rent and mortgage free lol! Then and only then do you really start to see your net worth jump exponentially.

But you still have to pay properly taxes and some states like New Jersey it can be $ 1,200 a month or more.

Michele McGill All depends on what you need at the time. Their priority was a decent more dependable vehicle at the time. Yours is a business as you dont need a vehicle.

Michele McGill - A safe, dependable car for his wife and small kids was a higher priority in my opinion. If anything had happened to them, he wouldn't have the drive to even want business.

The Former Mrs Jones i was the same! 25-26....$30k in consumer debt, nothing to show for it.
basically said, you know what, im sick of this. stopped buying consumer goods and stupid items and paid off that debt in just under a year. now when i want something, i save and it brings so much more joy truly "owning" the things i like.
