I could listen to Doreen Keogh's voice all day. (Departed this world in 2017). The Rover's Return set was only half built. Note the empty wall shelves. Arthur Leslie (Jack Walker) went on to live for another eight years. I recall my sadness on his passing in 1970 three months before I left for Hatfield Polytechnic, a departure which ended my watching this then great soap. I saw every episode until then. I particularly recall the first episode which I considered to be boring, but hung on in there as it quickly improved. The Ogdens are particularly legendary. Nowadays I've not watched tv for over thirty years, which I think says it all as to present day tv broadcasting standards. But my late mother watched every episode until her death in 1994. Has anyone seen every episode?
Try a certain William Roache, if he watches it then there's a possibility but if so he must think it's just the same as Neighbors or Home & Away, just utter tosh.
In real life Jack walker was 61, Annie walker 63, Ena Sharpels 63, Minnie Caldwell 64, Martha Longhurst 47, Albert Tatlock 66, they'd all have passed for 75-80 Today, back in the early 60s, you were old by 55 and life expectancy was about 60 for the average working person. Len fairclough played a much older character than his real age, he'd have only been 32 in this episode, way to young to have been in ww2, but easily passed for mid 40s, Ken Barlow would have been 30, but was actually playing a 23 year old. These were the ages of the actors themselves, not the ages they were supposed to be
Albert Tatlock I notice this a bit with other shows from ‘last century’. The thing about those times, though, was that it wasn’t seen as a failure of sorts to become old, so people didn’t fight tooth and nail to make themselves look young again. The clothes,,however, didn’t help at all - especially the clothes worn by Minnie, Martha and Ena. Speaking of Minnie - I know a real life Minnie, but unfortunately there’s no Ena to have fun with her,
Lynne Carol was very well disguised as Martha Longhurst, in reality she was a very lovely looking actress, and never got recognised as Martha. Martha's specs in reality didn't have any lenses in!
"the early episodes with Ena,Minnie,&Martha were hilarious they were a comedy team when they had Martha die off it was just Ena and Minnie to keep laughter within the drama on the street. "-😀😥. 🌐📻🌐.
Brilliant actors and written by a genius.
Result - TV perfection.
Absolutely.
Annie Walker (Doris Speed) really was like royalty in those early days, the 60’s were enjoyable times for me aged 7 in 1962.
Same for me, watched this with my mother.
"we'll have 2 milk stouts better make them quick we're going to the Luxor to see asparagus" "Don't you mean Spartacus Minnie" Absolutely hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
By, Minnie’s easy to entertain. Watching washing go round is more fun than telly for her! 😂😂

I can remember back in 1976 my grandma scrubbing the steps of the front door.
That scene in the Laundromat........ classic!
Modern day scriptwriters could learn a bit from watching these early episodes.
Ty so much for uploading these episodes great fan from nz here 💓

And Florrie Lindley was only 40 in 1962, but could pass for 70.
What about Frank? I mean he doesn’t look that old-was the actor ( Frank Pemberton) younger than the character? He doesn’t look much older than Ken!
Lynne Carol was very well disguised as Martha Longhurst, in reality she was a very lovely looking actress, and never got recognised as Martha. Martha's specs in reality didn't have any lenses in!
Florrie (about the salmon) “It’ll be a nice special treat for Mr Walker.”
Annie “Oh, that’s alright. Mr Walker has his special treat coming...”
😂

🌐📻🌐.
Ena, Minnie and Martha run this show
They should have kept Martha
That picture above the cupboard in the forst scene is Annie in her younger days
Jack Walker really was like Jack Duckworth, wasn’t he? 😂😂
I recognise Concepta as Mary, the next door neighbour in the Royal Family
Another great show- this one dominated by the 3.
Poor Jack, he couldn't get a word in with Annie, she really was a battleax I felt sorry for him, brilliant character nevertheless.
Brilliant
Did Lynne Carrol have a cold here? Martha sounds a bit huskier than normal.
Laryngitis?
'Lucky Lolita'. Was that Martha's coded message about one of the cast?
Why are there so many missing episodes??
😂😂 Annie has eyes in the back of her head
E. "If I want to freeze to death, I'll do it in my own house in comfort.".......
Surely a doctor wouldn't discuss Jack even with his wife,,,
This is years before GDPR or even modern Data Protection laws. Doctors would sometimes grass you up to the local vicar if you weren’t careful!
So what had happened to Ena? I know she wasn't dead, but what was wrong?
She had a mild stroke and got a concussion when she hit her head as she fell.
