Loved your advice! I had been making music since 2013 but only started implementing the tips you stated here last to this year and it truly has made the biggest difference. A really useful production tip that I have discovered through trial and error is to always take a break after working on a song for a long period of time and to not overanalyze/master it. Imperfections in music usually come out to be the best parts, but also if you give your ears and brain and break from listening and editing the same song for hours with no progress, you can always stumble on something outside of production that will inspire or redirect your path in the music. Also allows you to come back to the track and have a fresh take on it.
Production Tip: I sometimes gain stage each individual word of a vocal to -10db. Yes, it is doing the work that a good compressor would usually do, but personally I find it gives me greater control and consistency over the level and sound of the vocal in the mix. I do this gain staging by making a small cut at the lowest point of volume in between each word, and then do a small cross fade to make sure it doesn’t pop - when I’m doing this, I am also leaving out any ‘Sss’ sounds. The reason I do it word for word, is because - when gain staging an entire sentence or vocal, it always going off the peak level, which means everything else is brought down. This way, you have complete control of the vocal, and it also has the benefit of bringing out certain words that may have been less clear in the delivery… though the sacrifice is, you have to be willing to put in the time to do this - I’m not high-end in producing by any means, and there are probably producers who are going to disagree, but as an independent producer/artist this is something I’ve recently been playing with and have really enjoyed the results with. Thanks for the vid, Ditto! Would love that free mic! 😁 🎤
Best advice? Get an instrumental mix of your song first, then add the vocals to the finalized product. This forces you to use a forward and backward attention to your song. By that I mean you have the end-goal in sight in your head as you go... and not just making it up as you go. So: 1) Mix your song to your ideal best. 2) Add vocals and backing using an anti-masking tool like Firespacer so that your vocal and addons fit perfectly with your instrumental composition. This advice applies to your guitar playing, piano playing and general mixdowns. As well as bus mixes.
As a beginner who has limited resources for the time being doesn't hinder your growing process and it actually directs you in a direction of discovery and you being able to master some specific skills that ultimately make you as a producer authentic and rare❤.
Best tip: In music mix so many things could be added, but sometimes less is better. It’s preferable to concentrate on the quality of the sounds provided rather than the number of sounds. Every sound should enhance the whole track. Likewise, silence within the mix is quite powerful as well!
Best Tip:- Just be yourself man, dont overthink it, You might and will think that i might wanna add more synths to this track as it doesnt sound full or something. The thing is that overthinking sometimes pushes your creativity but even sometimes kills it due to over complexity. What you listen to is probably not as complex as you think they actually are. A single well designed synth can replace a 1000 badly designed synths layered together. Remember, LESS IS MORE here. You are only a good producer if you can create something out of nothing, coz everybody has expensive plugins and stuff right? :) so how are you different? Lastly never underestimate the power of stock plugins (Im a FL user) They are hella powerful if you know them how to use. Just thats it man! youre good to go!
Tip:believe in your self, have confidence when you make music. Those people who go against you take them as people who are pushing you to make more.the music trip is not easy but when you become professional its easy cs at the time people are gonna recognise you as a goat n its also easy for you to pull with something catchy so to that i say lets push hard and not give up because our time will come Thank you ditto for being reliable
The tip that stuck with me: "Take time to learn what your creative flow actually is. Put in the muscle memory and explore where inspiration takes you. "
Producer tip:Always take your time when making music, that may bring out the best good music out of yourself, you have to be dedicated and inspired.Think out of the box, enhance the ability to face your mistakes and learn from them with confidence.
Music Creator Tip :Don't let perfection block your progress. Every beat, melody, or idea you create is a step forward, even if it feels imperfect. Music is about expression, not flawlessness. Remember, even your favorite songs weren’t perfect when their creators first started. Focus on the **feeling** and **vibe** of what you're making, not the technicalities. Trust the process, and understand that each track is a building block toward mastering your sound. Keep creating, and let the learning happen as you go!
Make sure you use FLAT uncolored good speakers or headphones. Also if you have OCD like me work on multiple projects at once so you can take a break from tracks. Spending too much time on a single track can make you dislike the track after listening to sections over and over. Give yourself a breather and come back.
Producer Tip: Use contrast to create emotional impact. Embrace silence as much as sound. Dropping the beat or simplifying your arrangement at key moments makes the return of energy hit way harder. Let your music breathe-sometimes less is more!
If you get stuck or don't know where to go step back and revisit at a later time. Sometimes you get new inspiration or just hear the song differently that allows you to continue.
If you're just starting out, I have two tips for you: i) You'll learn faster by trying to produce a song (and figuring out issues as you go) than watching 20 UA-cam videos on how to produce a song. ii) You'll learn more by finishing 3 songs than starting (and abandoning halfway) 10 new songs. iii) All DAWs (Ableton, Logic, Pro Tools, etc) are just tools. Pick one and master it. Don't get caught in the "tutorial rabbit hole". If you're already producing, I have a lot of tips, but one that made the most difference for me is: i) Check your mixes in MONO. Add a MONO effect on your Master channel, and map a key that toggles it. So now your can spontaneously switch between stereo and mono as you proceed.
Production tip: Always remember there is no subjective way of producing or making your music, the song that u produce is like your canvas so have fun exploring the different colors and textures to your song
Producer Tip: If you’re experiencing a block in creativity don’t beat yourself up, take a break from creating and find inspiration in things you love or by listening to music or content for more inspiration. I personally find that creativity comes to those who seek it.
Here's a tip: Start with a strong foundation in music theory. Understanding chord progressions, scales, and rhythm will elevate your production skills. Learn how to create tension and release using suspended chords. And always believe in Yourself❤ Your unique sound matters. Don't compare, Mistakes are lessons. Learn, grow, and innovate. Explore genres, instruments, and Work with others, share knowledge, and lift each other up. regular practice shapes mastery. Create with love, not fear. Authenticity resonates. Rest to reboot creativity.Acknowledge progress.
