  • Why do most of the cast of Andor, have some sort of British accent? Whether that be Scottish, Welsh or a posh London accent? Well, it isn't just exclusive to Andor. Star Wars has used the power of accents in the Star Wars Universe ever since the Original Trilogy. And here's why.
Andor, Andor Review, Andor Episode 1, Andor Episode 2, Andor Episode 3, Andor Episode 4, Cassian Andor, Andor Trailer, Star Wars Andor, Andor Explained, Andor Easter Eggs, Andor Disney Plus, Andor 2022

British actors have always been a staple in Star Wars. But we've never seen this much usage since the Original Trilogy. I forgot to mention that Thrawn has a "British sounding accent", but has a bit of a Danish tinge to his speech, this could because he's from Csilla in Chiss space, and also strengthen the concept of characters having unique accents because of their birth planet. Like Cassian Andor, as I mentioned in the video. But let me know your thoughts in the comments!

There's also a lot of droids with British accents! I think we will always relate them with a place on earth because English is a language from earth of course and all those accents are from here also, but I think giving everyone such a variety and not just having everyone speak with just American or just British accents makes for the credibility of this huge galaxy where everyone is from a different place. Also there's the Star Wars classic language of an alien or droid that is completely unknown to us but the characters on screen get it and engage with them and just makes them feel more out of this world. And I just love when there's no subtitles at all!

Did... People just now figure this out?
This has been the case since OT. The Imperial accent is a posh British accent, while the rest are whatever.
In Star Wars: The Old Republic, if you play the Imperial Agent class, your boss even tells you to "drop the accent" when going undercover, and from that point onward, the voice actor of your character switches from a British accent to an American one.

    • @EcksClips
      @EcksClips  2 роки тому +69

The rest aren't 'whatever' per se. The accents change the further out you go. And I explain a bit more in detail in my pinned comment with Thrawn as an example.

Andor is honestly HBO quality. In its visual effects, its filming, its dialogue, its themes, its willingness to get mature. I doubt we'll see any of the full frontal nudity we've come to expect from HBO shows, but its still way more mature than Star Wars usually is.
The dialogue especially is top notch. Star Wars has always struggled with cliched and silly dialogue. But not Andor. The characters talk in an intelligent way, there's good use of wit. Metaphor. But also body language, facial cues. Everything they say sounds natural.
The guy behind Andor claims not to be a Star Wars fan but I don't believe that. He is doing mad justice to Star Wars here. He's taken the Universe, and actually added to it in a meaningful way. Rather than just throwing in fan service, he's made an original story, with original characters, with original locations, and original ideas. What fan service is there is minor, but still extremely rewarding. Like the Starkiller armor or the reference to the Rakatan Infinite Empire. Stuff to keep the Legends fans interested while making the sort of story we all wanted.

It's a dam shame that such an unimportant character like Andor, got the best directors, budget, and writers, while one of the most iconic characters in film history (Obi-Wan) got the shittiest.

Thank god that isn't canon. It simply doesn't work. Obi Wan was from a middle class family in the Outer Rim, and he clearly didn't inherit the accent from Qui Gon, who speaks in a neutral vaguely RP accent, while Obi Wan has a good RP accent. Tarkin doesn't adopt his accent either, in fact his accent is considered to stand out from most Imp personnel, since he is from the Outer Rim as well. On Naboo, again, while the human colonists do originate from the Core, it had been many generations since then, and most of the people with speaking roles were British or British colonial accented people. Dooku is again, from Serenno, not a Core World, and his master was Yoda, who doesn't really have a human accent, so clearly he inherits it from Serenno.

What I find interesting is that using the Northern English accents in particular gives a good sense of the setting for a show or movie as being industrial and gritty, because these regions where those accents are from are generally worse off and more industrial than the richer, more well-spoken South of England where you get those posh accents of people working in offices.
You can draw some good parallels between the real life rich-poor divide and 'Andor', where you've got an industrial planet with rougher accents vs. the core planets where there's well-spoken high ranking officers living in luxury.

I get that American accents are common in media often. But I'd say British are even more common, not only because British theater has existed for longer, but because many schools are based in Britain. As for our accents, try comparing an accent from Florida to a Minnesota accent, or a Utah accent from an Alaskan one.. they're very different. I get what you're saying here, but we don't all sound the same. The 'American' accent is just as stereotyped as the London accent of Britain.

The visual representation of power in Star Wars has always been a human in a well-cut military uniform speaking in a posh English accent, the posher the more powerful. Thrawn is the only dude I can think of that is an important imperial figure within the hierarchy, even in legends, that is not a human. The rebels and even the republic to some extent are intentionally pluri-centric in origin, with lots of aliens and a variety of accents demonstrated as being in places of power. Alternatively, it has been a much more recent choice to even have a variety of skin colors, and both men and women, represented in positions of power under the empire. This is probably driven more by our own present social change than anything else.
Honestly, I think it is kinda neat! definitely gives you a feeling that the driving force behind the galaxy under the empire is humans, with the power structure being a human at the top, and humans all the way down, with a rare exception from time to time of a presentable blue alien man or the like.

Well aside from it's a way to show different parts or status's of the empire. It is also due to the fact that the original Star Wars was largely filmed in the UK and part of the rules for filming in the UK and to get a the tax break is to cast a specific % of British Actors.
With the exception of the the main cast most characters were played by British actors and if they were rebels many were later dubbed over to give them a American accents again distinguishing them from the empire.
The EU then adapted this into how the universe is and has been a staple ever since in all it's projects.
The other thing is the UK has a huge theatre scene, for a space opera that works fairly well I suppose haha.

It's not just the accent - but a quality British actor adds gravitas to the character/role too, and playing the part as seriously as they would in a drama... Tarkin in the original SW is case in point... he has a sinister presence from the start, and you don't question that he is indeed a high ranking Imperial officer... he's believable in that role
...contrast that with Hux in the Disney trilogy... he's just not convincing at all, and as such you don't invest in the character. Domhnall Gleeson is actually a very good actor too, so this must be how he was directed to play the part.
As has been said many, many times - the Imperial forces were just the Germans from WW2 made sci-fi, and to make them work they need to be played as such - seriously... making them buffoons (like the Scout Troopers in Mando) just ruins them as the credible villains of the piece.

Part of me partially has issue since most British actors seem to get cast as Imperials. To be fair though, Core World planets were certainly more supportive of the Empire than Outer Rim planets until the atrocities like Alderaan became public. Since it’s only natural for humans to be Imperial officers, it’s also always natural to assume most of these guys are from the Core Rim. And I suppose people with accents, especially from the Outer Rim, were usually told to change how they talked if they ever wanted to rise in the ranks.
Still, with this heavy use of British accents for only one side, it certainly would develop into the expectation that anybody with such an accent was always the bad guys. Folks like Mothma are a rare exception, at least in Star Wars lore.
I want more diversity among the accents now that it’s been highlighted, but I just don’t know how to manage that for stories in the Imperial Era given the reasons I stated why in Canon this would occur. Maybe a post far from civilization could have Imperials who relax the rules. An unimportant post, one seen lowly among Imperials. Otherwise though as much as I don’t want every British person in Star Wars to be an Imperial official, it just would feel unnatural if another accent was ever used by an Imperial. At least in the age of the Republic and the Clone Wars, you can expect a more diverse range of accents since it’s not just Core World humans who became officers in the Republic military.
