I use the term leading leg, that which presents first on the needle, to take away the confusion of front/back or left/right. I knit into the leading leg regardless whether it is front/back or left/right.
I use the term Leading Leg so regardless which way the leg presents, left/right or front/back, knit into the leading leg.. I find this term less confusing.

Yes! You can use "leading leg" instead of "right leg" when describing a stitch leg, too.
