  • Jesus says to love your enemies and to overcome evil with Good when he tells his disciples to not resist someone who is evil. How can he expect us to do this? And, what can the examples Jesus gives us after telling us not to resist someone who is evil tell us about what he means?

Honestly, I found that love our enemy and be generous to evil are the hardest things to do but I do understand too that the road to heaven is narrow. And remembering what Blessed Mary said to Jesus disciples, "Do what He tells you to do"....Amen🙏

It is hard, & it’s my struggle too. The thing that helps me is to realize & remember that if we don’t forgive we become the evil we hate. In some ways, there is goodness to the anger & hate to begin with because it’s usually anger that the individual is not & will never face justice for their sins/crimes on this earth while all the victims suffer for months, years, or even life.
I truly was able to understand the idea that we become the evil in forgiveness through the HBO show “Dexter” & discussions around that character & the real life evils he wound avenge. He was a victim of terrible violence as a young child before being adopted by a cop & his family. Once his violent tendencies became clear, the father taught him to channel them into violent criminals only to use the evil for good if you will. In the first episode, he ends the life of a child serial killer who was a teacher, which is the most evil criminal to walk the earth in almost everyone’s opinion. It’s been a decade or more since I watched it & it’s obviously not good, Christian entertainment, but there was something in the conversation between the 2 serial killers & something in the way the director shot that scene that takes the viewer from cheering on the violence to a place of uncomfortableness & realization that despite our fantasies, Dexter is NOT our great hero & saving grace even if we like him through his family & friends & understand the horrors that made him do those things.
Without meaning to in the beginning, I ended up comparing situations I would find myself in with that realization. Obviously, most of us won’t find ourselves up against that much evil, but it’s the same concept. If we through pride, make it our job instead of God’s to give the person justice, we really become consumed with hate & that person’s level of evil & it changes us into an angry, bitter person who will never pass on even random kindness, joy, & love from Christ to others, & we kill any joy & peace that we would’ve had in our lives. It’s a daily struggle if we have witnessed something so evil it can’t be fixed or made right by humans in this life. I still slip sometimes so please pray for me. I’ve also found that many of us channel that anger into other celebrity or community targets like politicians, etc. I find I tend to funnel it into people who are purposely involved in committing some type evil against others for fun. For me, the main target the last several years is an evil, atheist, Christian-hating channel here on UA-cam who lies & does terrible things to people for UA-cam money & fun despite being sued by so many victims. While UA-cam censors Christians & conservatives, they fully know about this woman & let her continue despite constantly breaking their own terms of service rules. As evil as this woman is I know I’m wrong to follow this & comment against her, but I keep falling into the sin of it. Anyone reading this pray me & others out of this type of behavior & give us all the strength to turn it over to God. More importantly, pray for the victims of terrible injustice & violence to turn to Jesus instead of anger & hatred.

Modern Christians must deal with this passage in light of the fact that some handouts can and do enable self-destruction. We are seeing this in America every day.
We should be generous, but never in the sense that evil is exacerbated or enabled. Our understanding of what is "generous" must be seen in the light of prudence and the realities we can observe around us.
Great clarification at the end of the video.

Perhaps you can look at it this way, sometimes we have to be stepping stones for others to know Christ and have a better understanding of Christ. Meaning, continue to be a good Christian and a good example for others, continue to pray for them, and offer up your sufferings for them that God may grant them the grace of conversion...then you store up treasure in heaven. One day when you are in heaven, those people who made your lives difficult but that you prayed sincerely for, may come up to you in heaven and say, "thank you for praying for me when no one else did. I'm here because of your intercession on my behalf." How God will delight in both of you and in your imitation of Him through your love and mercy.

Your prayer is false if you pray for them when their lives are going into misery yet you feel a sense of pride or happiness because of that. You cannot pray for them then so you must do intentionally and show it through your actions that will let them know that you are not their enemy anymore by doing this even if they hit you or deny you they cannot deny their own self's that you helped them when they were so low this is why Christ teaches us that we should give the other cheek because we have done everything we could to turn them around. So be patient and never lose yourself in being self righteous.

The struggle in these days of unjust materialism (narcissistic) and the "Culture of Death" is to suffer for the good fight in some way, and not leave it to everyone else. But also, when 'good' people stand up to fight, they have to get used to fighting with one hand tied behind their back and leave the rest to God.

    Lots of misunderstanding.
    Here how it should go.
When you sin to someone, you owe that person something to offer as an apology/recompense equal to that of what the sin is about. Depending the level of how grave the matter is, it will be taken to a judge to settle a dispute.
But Jesus wants us to recompense more than we are required of by the person we owe or by the Judge.
Jesus' example was something like these
If some requires you (of the judge as a recompense/apology for your sin) to run a mile, run twice as much instead.
If someone sues you(for your sins), and the judge requires you to give your coat, give also your cloak.
If someone requires of you to be slap on your right cheek, give also the other cheek.
Jesus is saying that when you have sinned to someone, recompense them more than the Judge requires of you.
It's the duty of the judge to deal with the dispute between the offender and the offended during that time.
And they are to judge righteously according to the law.

Interesting perspective... but what about the ‘resist ye not evil’ prelude into those proceeding passages? If the meaning is as you say and refers to one who was required to pay retribution for a sin against another, is the one requesting justice considered evil?

    • @treadingtheway3730
      @treadingtheway3730 4 роки тому +1

@@WAKEUPARTIST the one requesting justice is not evil. However, it becomes evil when the one who is requesting justice or those around him commits sin/evil out of anger. That I think is the point Jesus is making. When you commit sin to someone, that someone might commit an evil act towards you out of anger. This i think we should not resist. Do not resist evil with evil.
For example: you accidentally hit someone while driving a car which left him with few scratches(let us put aside who's at fault). While trying to know if he was okay or not, suddenly you were beaten badly by him or you were ganged up by his companions and got beaten badly.
That i think is evil and not the right kind of justice.
When Jesus quoted Exodus 21:24, He is teaching from that law until he quotes another law. And it is like saying to us to study the one he quoted, and you can compare Jesus' teachings and the following verses of exodus 21:24.

What I am also seeing in these examples is that by generosity the incident is reframed. The perpetrator frames things through their wrongdoing ( he/she dictates what the scene is all about e.g. humiliation, robbery, forced labour - all setting the scene as them being all powerful versus victim) but generosity subverts this narrative and makes the wrongdoing look ridiculous. How can one humiliate you if you refuse to take on the role of the one being humiliated? How can someone rob you if you refuse to take on the role of the one being robbed etc....

I think its noteworthy to point out,
That Jesus on the cross asked the Father to "FORGIVE THEM, AS THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO"
in the midst of His excruciating innocent suffering, for our sins, He STILL asks the Father to forgive them...they DO NOT KNOW what they are doing...meaning, people who are angry, rage, taken 9ver by hate or bitterness are closed minded..or their eyes are not open, their hearts are closed and deceived by the devil.
We should not return this evil action eith another evil action, bc for SURE, that's what the devil EXPECTS!
And no good comes from it.
The only thing I struggle with is how do people who exhibit bad behavior LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES???
IF THEY are not punished for their actions.
As if a dog is punished for biting someone or a bad behavior???
If you just behave kindly, compassionate, yes this may quench the fire that the aggressor has, but this may also give them license to continue this behavior...as if your enabling them.
Confusion...amd why does Jesus, Son of God, not just say it straight?!
    Why all the confusion??
Jesus obviously knows that His word will reach billions over thousands of years.
WHY THE CONFUSION bc if His words?

How about an exegesis on the Gospel reading at yesterday's Sunday Mass, namely Matthew 5:22:
But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Our import parish priest from India didn't understand it. Thus he ignored the 3 increasing levels of anger and stayed with the usual, politically correct, insipid 'we should all love each other' boilerplate. However, even St. Augustine had trouble with this one. Moreover, foolishness (folly) is one of the most common vices in the world. There never will be a shortage of fools. In fact, one of my former parish priests said (in reference to my exasperation at the senselessness of our monsignor) 'The man's a fool.' I believe he was. So if a person really is a fool, is it a mortal sin to state the obvious and tell him he is? Politely or otherwise.
(PS: Actually, almost all our priests are imports. The average parish in our archdiocese only produces 1 vocation every 50 to 100 years. As the Church secretary put to me, "The nations we used to evangelize, now evangelize us.")

The leaders of the K of C repeatedly warned me to "keep it to myself; don't bring that stuff up around her!" Then my pastor told me it wasn't his job, it was the laity's. He knew enough not to say anything because he'd be in trouble with the collection plate if he disturbed the comfortable pews. Ironically, he went deaf shortly thereafter and lost his pastorship. Coincidence?
Then I wrote a couple of letters to the editor and a columnist of our official archdiocese newspaper that praised James Martin SJ and blasted Trump. In response, I got 2 columns describing me as a nutcase-lunatic and 2 more columns blasting Trump. (Hillary always went untouched.) By the way, the same columnist previously came out in the Saturday edition of the country's largest secular newspaper describing his conversion to and attendance of gay weddings. He adamantly predicted the Catholic Church would officially approve of them within 10 years!! I forwarded copies of all this to our archbishop and the archdiocesan editor-in-chief. Each time I was blown off. Enough said? Incidentally, a good number of knowledgeable, faithful Catholics also wrote in published letters to the editor, complaining about the columnist. Naturally, they were all ignored. The homolobby rules with an iron fist!
If you want a good laugh (actually, a good cry). Check out the columns for yourself. Better yet, try it yourself and see how far you get.

You can find them on Augustine Institute website, Ascension Press website, or CatholicStore.com. He uses the Revised Standard Version (RSV) 2nd Catholic edition I believe.

Overcoming evil with good has absolutely NOTHING to do with the devil. The Bible is clear in James ch. 4 v 7 that if we 'resist the devil, and he will flee from you'.
The devil knows that if we try to 'take him on' in the power of the flesh, that we will fall into the temptation, therefore when we resist him in the power of the spirit, he will flee because he knows that it is Christ that he is confronting. Satan cannot stand against the Lord Jesus Christ since He defeated him at Calvary. That is why we 'must be born again' of the Spirit of God to have Christ indwelling us and for us to be 'in Christ'.

Wouldn't the first century written by apostles be Christian and not Jewish? Once you believe in Jesus you are no longer a Jew.

No, you would still be a Jew. You would be a fulfilled Jew, because your Messiah has come. The rest of us are pagans who have converted in. We are all now called Christian's but all of the early Apostles were born and died Jews. They were Christian but they were still Jews.

Hi Paul - you have obviously not been enlightened by the Thomistic a posteriori arguments (by reason alone) for God's existence. I am happy to shed light for you, so that you may be certain that God exists (no faith required for this). Here are some videos to start, though I can explain for you:
