When to call it quits on a project vehicle - The DOA Avalanche Hits a Wall (Again..)

  • A few months ago be brought this DOA Chevrolet Avalanche home. It did not run, it had no breaks.. it was a total DOA. After a few months of tinkering with it here and there, It runs, it has breaks, and it is on its way towards being road worthy again!.. But there are still problems. BIG Problems.
At this point in the project I have to stop and ask myself if this truck will over be able to be driven on the road again, and if not.. do I continue?

It obviously has outlived its usefulness. The frame is in too bad of shape and shouldn’t be put back on the road anyway. The motor sounds good though!

Agreed. Even if D&E was able to get a clean New Jersey title, it likely would have failed the strict New Jersey safety inspection. Many cars that fail New Jersey safety inspection, live on in New York. Since Lake Effect already failed New York State safety inspection, the outcome is likely not good.

Yeah even if you didn't ls swap the Dakota (Which I'm not mad about) I think it would have been a good Idea to pulled the motor and Trans to have for another project down the line. I mean everybody has a car or truck that they wish the had an LS to put in it. you could have been in the rare position of having an LS before you decide what vehicle you want to put it in. Could've been amazing...

  • @1gatomon

Lots of them around down south. When the frame is broken like that there is no saving it. Been there. At that point its best to find one thats solid with a blown motor or trans and bring it home and swap the good parts into it.. I used to drive up north and buy engines, Transmissions and Rear ends from rusted cars and then buy cars with bad motors ect and swap them in and you would have a nice ride for years to come.

Tech tip: if you're going to be seriously running this channel, having cars come in and out, look into getting a dealer license. My dad has been a used car dealer for 30 years (freelance) and just takes his plates from car to car doesn't matter if it barely runs or is a Ferrari. Dealer plates cover inspection, registration, and insurance all in one. It's like magic. And we've lived in Central NJ forever. Love your vids. I just finally finished replacing all the front suspension on my Jeep WJ (shocks, sway bar links, steering stabilizer, all 4 tie rod ends drag link & tie rod, track bar, and all 4 front control arms + axel bushings). Took me a few months to finally get it all done myself but my new AT tires come in next week and w/ an alignment I should be good to go for another 100k on the 4.0. Currently @ 186k

I would tell you your Avalanche series wasn't all for nothing. It was educational to me in learning Wisconsin road salt is nothing to East Coast ocean salt.
And I had no idea how hard it was to register a vehicle in New Jersey. This series definitely adds value to your channel. Keep doing what your doing. And we'll all do what we can do to not let Cash for Clunkers #2 happen.

As for getting another Avalanche with similar interior. You want an LTZ trim vehicle. The Z71 is for the 4x4 suspension.
I'd offer my 07 Sierra extended cab, but it's SLE trim. And it looks like a crew cab is a necessity with the family.

Sadness. Would definitely like to see another avalanche, 4x4 silverado, tahoe, or suburban in its place that needs a lot of work that’ll be fun fixing. I enjoyed this the most because I’m fixing up(I’ve already put bigger mud tires on and lifted it 3” because I’m just a 17year old southern boy lol) a rusty Silverado for my first truck. It’s a Curlina salty beach 4x4, that’s for sure! I was hoping to be able to get it ready enough to take it to the beach and air down the tires on the sand this summer but I think the rona has prevented that from happening. I’ll be doing more freshwater fishing than saltwater this summer. I’ll likely be changing the trans fluid n filter, the diff fluids, and the t case fluid this wkd. But who knows, stuff tends to come up and I might only get one of those things done lol. Y’all take care and stay safe.

Sorry about my question about carbureting the Dakota, because I found out here in NY, a 95 or older doesn't need to be emissions tested. I assume it's the same on NJ. BTW, an Edelbrock is the same as the older Carter AFB found on lots of GM and Mopar vehicles, so you should be able to find something in a junkyard that will work fine. My immediate thoughts are a 65-66 Chevy Nova 327. I believe they went to the Q-jet in 67.

This guy has practically abandoned it at my shop and is giving us the run around "oh I'll fix it oh I'll fix it" but it's been taking up parking space for month. It runs, but it's pretty beat up and needs ALOT of tender love and care. We are probably going to wait a month or so more then put a lean on the truck and scrap it (or give it away). In fact, maybe once or twice a year we have this happen. Late last year it was a fairly straight wj, but it had a bad diff and bad trans, and once again needed more love then it was worth and sadly we scrapped it. I own a avalanche 2003 with 347000 miles on it and man I've got all the same issues going on the rust is terrible back door latch broken the codes I've pulled up were around 11 and I've been working on fixing it. I just did transmission work changing solenoids dropping the pan that was a headache itself. We got the speaker thing too above your driver side seat I believe that's for onstar if in wreck. Today I just did a tune-up changed wires plugs and after transmission solenoid changes I'm still having issues shifting getting it out of 1st I can only go 25 but after tune up I got it to 55mph today. Code pulled up for maf sensor I think that's next I thought clogged cats too. When I seen this video I just kept watching and it killed me to see u have to let it go too cause I know personally how it is to own one. They sound great and I hope I can save this one myself. I need to find a transmission maybe I think for it. And I was all like man I wish I could have gotten that from you. It's hard to find parts for avalanches especially transmissions. Well man I'm sorry u couldn't register it in NJ. All that hard work and time effort it's a bummer but I really liked your vids man keep it up don't give up I know u won't u give it your all. Have a great day man. Hopefully u find another

My buddy up here in Toledo bought a Ave-a-lunch and found out the same rotted out frame issue. 2k down the hole. Anywho.. I think a nice ZJ project would fit in that empty spot if it would be a 4.0. If I happen to come into a good windfall of a vehicle or money, I will donate my clean 98 ZJ as is to y'all. Eric would jelly! LOL

New England/Michigan/Ohio - super salty environment cars - not ones you want to own. my 96 Explorer was from way up in the Appalachian Mountains of NC. It stayed for 20 years, daily driven, in a county that used heavy amounts of salt brine (not salt). It was so incredibly rusty bad underneath - words cannot describe how unsafe it was. The bumpers literally rusted through and fell off. Even cars from the salt belt, I have never seen that on an Exploder.
Good luck on your hunt for another. Take a vacation down south, get one from downstate Virginia, NC, GA, etc. Take a beach vacation, bring one up...

Man I feel you. I bought my 02 Avalanche when it was shiny and new. Now I seem to spend my free time (and money) trying to make it run reliably. It's not my daily driver and I'm at my breaking point where it's just not worth throwing more money into it. I'd rather sell it to someone who will enjoy the beast with a custom steel winch mount bumper and mud slinging 33" tires. I really just want to play in pine barrens one last time before I say good bye. You wouldn't want to buy it, would you? Lol

I’d love to see a cheap xj project. Pick one up and do a total fluid change and all that stuff, throw a small lift on it, and then show the viewers how good a cheaply built xj can do offroad. Sad to see the avalanche go tho man

I must admit to being a bit sad "Lake Effect" had to go as I just saw and looked over her twin sister here in our little town last week. The owner uses it as his daily driver and has managed to keep it in really, really good condition. I suppose the thing that has saved the local truck is that we don't get a lot of snow and ice down here so salt (it's called slag here) is not as much of a "car killer" as it is on the roads as it is in your neck of the woods.

Go to the state of Vermont. They will let you register it there. I know alot of people who have done it with old antique vehicles. Look at some youtube videos about it.

    • @mediaguy4037
      @mediaguy4037 4 роки тому

I don't think you need any special paperwork or even a title, except maybe a note from the seller saying they sold it to you. Alot of people get titles for antique cars there and then bring it back to their own state to get a proper title where they live.

I have a 2002 AVY with 267k,orig engine &Trans. The issue with my truck is its eating coolant due to these Vortex suffered with porous heads. I'd hate to get rid of this. I don't want to pay 70k when I could get a brand new engine & transmission for less than the down payment. What would you do?
