The lyrics are something I needed to hear but didn’t want to accept
Same exact same situation for me.. I had to break free from my ex with untreated BPD.. it was one of the hardest things ive ever done..
Felt, I've had to break chains with alot of what I thought was close people.. and even people who was really close to me, but either way it was a hard tower moment to bare but just know the universe only takes away people places and things to give us better.. why?.. cause we deserve the moon and wanna be taken there!! I know I'm on a bigger better path and in a funny way can feel something coming I don't know what but it feels magical and so I thank the universe for what it has and is about to give me and most importantly I thank her for giving us waterparks and all their beautiful emotion felt music!!! 🌻🍓🦄

I think this song truly shows how Knight has matured both as a songwriter and vocalist. Some of the softer notes that he is able to hit are ear candy. It is also what I believe is the most vulnerable song he has ever written. And I think sonically he is able to convey that message so well. The use of acoustic guitar, synths, and light drums is just perfect. This may be the best song that the band has ever made and released.

Yeah, somehow most of their song sound like somebody stole my thoughts. I might not know the guys or just Awsten well, but I feel like we would get along
this was the first song in a very long time to make me cry on first listen. GOOD AS FUCK
this song absolutely destroyed me in a way that I cannot explain. I just got out of an almost 5 year relationship, we are 20, been together since we were 15, by eachothers sides every moment we could be until suddenly things changed. The lyricism of loving someone but not knowing how to love them in the way that would make them realize or feel it most is how I felt for months on end, and "the eyes I gave up trying to captivate", during the end of our relationship, as much as I denied it and postponed the end and acted like it wasn't coming, I could very much see it near, and I just gave up and let her string me along because she didn't want to hurt me by leaving. this song gave me a hard cry, among all of othe other ones I've had about her these past few months.

@@roshanfey I'm not sure what sugary music is ,but oversaturated, that makes sense i mean he had a snapchat filter over his face the first few seconds of the video. The dislike of that lyric is a fair assessment. I believe it boils down to what type of man society says men should be which is the opposite of that line. Can you explain to me what sugary music?
best song on the album for me. the final minute of this song is one of the best things this band has ever done imo
This whole album is like massive punch to the gut in the best way possible
knowing this album is about religious guilt, framing this song as a breakup from christianity/god has been ridiculously healing and heartbreaking at the same time. i fucking love this band

Awsten sang this song at the first ever Waterparks concert I've been to (also the first one in Prague). And by the end his voice got so soft and quiet, it felt like a very special moment.

This song is so beautiful. My favorite song on Intellectual Property and maybe my favorite Waterparks song in general. The way so much emotion is conveyed and it doesn’t sacrifice anything musically with a great hook is so mind-blowing. Some of Awsten’s best vocals and Geoff absolutely killing it on guitar. Ottos drums remind me of an 80s ballad song, but it fits along to the melody.

Even though I’ve never been in a relationship, I can feel all the emotions Austin felt when writing this song. I cried and felt the deep regret that paint these lyrics. That is how you know a song is good.

There are many Waterparks songs that have great lyrics. None though that feel like a Shakesperean tragedy/love story. Awsten shows yet again how captivating he can be with a pen and a sheet of paper.
It’s not just the lyrics that make this song amazing. It’s the music behind the lyrics. It lets the words tell the story, but it sets the scene. The way it builds during the verse, letting you feel hope, and during the second verse where doubt creeps in. The anger of self-sabotage in the third.
But what truly stands out to me and still brings me to the edge of tears in almost every listening of Closer, is the empty space between what remains of a simple guitar accompanied by the hauntingly quivering vocals at the end filled with mourning and loss.
Awsten, thank you so much for giving this to us, 4 minutes to heart break.
