I have the nine transistor version of this radio. The extra selectivity of the RF stage definitely knocks down the images (birdies). I will bet that the transformerless audio output stage was quite groundbreaking in the early 1960s. ADDENDUM: my radio also drops in sensitivity at the low end of the dial, as yours does.
Even with smart phones and internet radio. There is definitely a place for these type of radio (i grew up on in the 70s)and you should give classes and teach all your knowledge.

I got this exact radio when I graduated from the eighth grade. It was in a Sears catalog and was said to be Ted Williams approved as one of the best radios Sears offered then. Mine was white in color. It took 6 D batteries if I remember right and was quite heavy to carry around.
Thanks for sharing this with us, Shango! Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones--such *WONDERFUL* memories, and all from a transistor radio that came off the assembly line when I (and probably many of us) were kids!
Man smoke is GOOD! I used to love the smoke from a KOOL ciggarette, but I have long since deprived my old aching body of the pleasure of a strong menthol smoke! God even 30 years after quitting I still miss them!
I find it interesting, comments about other then English stations. I think back to my father, who's mother was born in Sweden, and lived there till her 17th birthday, when they came to America. She met my grandfather, who was first Generation American, his folks came from Sweden just before he was born. You see, back then in the 1910's and forward, folks seemed to do as they do today, one nationality settled in small groups of like nationality. So it was, that for the first 3 years of dad going to school, he attended a "Swedish American" school, where the language of teaching was in Swedish, it was the 4th grade before he began to learn English, this in a school in rural South Dakota. Of course now days such things would not be heard of, and radio, being a new innovation of the time was probably broadcast in English, but who knows, there could well have been Swedish news, German news and so forth. Our States were formed by Scandinavian emigrants, and other northern Europeans. There were folks from Ireland as well, but, of course, they were looked upon as lower class. Don't get me wrong, this has all been long since settled, however there is still good nature kidding between the Swede's and Norwegians. In fact folks really didn't like the fact that 50 years ago, I, a nearly full blooded Swede actually stooped so low as to marry a Norwegian. Ah well, that was the way things were back then. Today, of course the big fight is against the Hispanic and Muslim invasions of our nation, I pray that one day we can look upon these days much like we look back at the old days when the worst of the worst came from Ireland or (GOD FORBID!) Italy! Don't even think about mentioning blacks, whom my dad used to warn me, that should I ever visit the city and see a black man coming up the sidewalk, cross the street before you meet least he stab you as you pass, and should a damn Mexican come look for him to brandish a straight razor to cut your throat for what ever coin you have in your pocket. So some things do change, dad left this earth in '73 but mom is still with us to this very day, and talks of the "boy" who takes her to the whirl pool bath in the home, speaking of a young black man who works as an aide at her nursing home. She is 93 and still going strong!

They really made them well back then, I believe this one even has an rf amplifier, you won't see that on any am portable today.... Good video, really brought this one back from the dead!!

L.A. has a radio station to pretty much suit everyone's musical tastes! I wonder how many formats a station can invent. How about "The all Progressive Geico Flo Channel"! That would be one station that would live less than a day.
This is Awesome, I have also resurrected some equipment that was in some extreme situations " fires and floods" mainly old jukeboxes" being in old basements with the bottom rotted out and rusty!! Perseverance Pays Off and great job!

Amazing video. I wonder how many Chinese radios made these days would work after baking in the sun for about forty year? I guess - 0! Actually, Sears sold some very good radios. They were made by Arvin or in this case, Warwick Electronics.
I have a B&K 960 Transistor Radio Analyst. Still does a good job. Would have been worth the price back when the little radios were worth being repaired.

Install a good speaker and reassemble the melted housing after electronic restoration to make it reliable. Spray with lush thick coats of high gloss clear lacquer and you have a zombie mutant nuclear apocalypse surreal-retro working radio with the "wet look". Make sure the now useless melted dial acrylic Is backlit though for maximum post apocalyptic effect..so a new backlight pilot lamp as well. Probably could sell some functional art like that to a niche market with enough profit to make it worthwhile. Imagine that playing on your desk or book case to get conversations started.
Grew up in extreme upper east Tenn in the 50s and the only foreign language I ever heard was that of Yankees who where moving here from mainly NJ. My Dad worked with many of them at Monroe a manufacturer of electro/mechanical calculators.
I once had a multi-band radio that looked a lot like this one. It was purchased at Wards I believe. At any rate, my son, then a young teenager with his first car took the damn thing out to a party so they could have a bond fire and dance to the music whilst drinking and fucking as the teens did back the. Well my son got wasted, so one of his buddies drove him home and put him to bed. I was working the night shift on the PD that night when the Highway Patrol requested backup at a car fire, when I got there, before the fire department, I saw the car was totally engulfed. I told the HP officer that my son had a car like that, however his rims were silver, not gold. Well silver paint can appear gold when the fire is hot enough, but I soon discovered my old radio in the ditch about ten yards behind the car, it was then that I knew the car was my sons. I made a quick call to my wife using the now ancient car phone in the squad car, asking where our son was. Well a quick check found him in his bed, so I was relieved that he was not in the car. Turned out, he had left his keys in the car, and the kid that bullied him for years took the thing and got it stuck, then spun the tires so long that the caught fire, thus the blaze. The kid was prosecuted for car theft and vandalism, but let off with a small fine as his dad was a big wig in the town and had power to protest. It took me two weeks of writing the little fucker tickets to get his drivers license suspended. Nearly lost my job over that one, but the Sheriff, who was also acting police chief supported me, as did the district judge. My son is now gown with married kids of his own, and two young boys who I hope puts him through at least half the hell he put us through as they grow into men. I gave him the old radio several years ago, as a sort of, well memory enhancer. KE0JBL 73's
This guy could make a radio/tv fix itself in fear by just giving a hard look at it. I wish I had his experience, I've got a couple old transistors radios with dead bands I want to restore but I get frustrated after only taking the back cover off. At 22:35 - for biasing those silicon transistors you need R19 around 246 Ohm and R20 around 697 Ohm. I know this video is old but if anyone is curious about biasing those silicons that is my calculation 😎
I was thinking about it and you would probably be pretty popular in a post apocalyptic scenario. I'm sure there would be a lot of call for a person who can make old av equipment work again with a minimum of parts.

the speaker on the destroyed one has a breather hole in the center of the magnet. but you are right, some of these old radios had incredible sound
