This is exactly how me and my friends were brought down when a chairlift at one of our local ski resorts transmission blew. The whole resort lost power which probably caused the transmission to break. It was a pretty sketchy experience, but a cool one that ill never forget
@Steven Goodnight I love skiing but I'm also afraid of heights! The longest gondola in the world is near me. It's about a 20 minute ride and you can't even see the ski hill from the bottom. There's also a spot at Durango mountain in Colorado where one of the ski lifts goes over a cliff wall and that big sky in Montana though often shut the lifts down in their bowl as it gets too windy. I've been on that when it happened. Not cool 😬😬😬
Yeah because ski lifts are way higher than people expect. One guy fell out of our ski lift and he fell perfectly but still had a broken leg and a cracked rib.
When I was a member of the Canadian Ski Patrol System back in the ‘80s we practiced this type of lift evacuation - it is not as scary as you might think - the patrollers are well trained and the technique has been perfected - it is really a simple matter of following the instructions and trusting the equipment. The only difficult part is the “leap of faith” when you slide out of the chair and let the rope take your weight - it will stretch a bit, but the team on the ground will pull against the stretch, and most people barely notice when they have completely left the chair. This team of Ski Patrollers did a great job keeping the skiers calm. Well done 👍 !
I learned to ski on Mt Hutt 9 years ago. Then I tore the ligament in my knee the next day (my 50th birthday) so that was the end of my skiing career lol. The next day we got the chairlift to the top of the mountain & just took in the breathtaking beautiful views of the snow capped mountains behind Mt Hutt & then got the chairlift back down again. It never even occurred to us that the chairlift could break down. So glad I wasn't on the chairlift when it broke cos it feels like it's a long way down to the snow below. Mt Hutt is an awesome place to go skiing & Abisko Lodge in Methven is a great place to stay 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I feel like I would have just hung off the edge with my arms, getting my skis as close to the ground as possible and just jumped. But the camera may be decieving on how high it actually was
Our old ski lift has no bar in front and you can littleraly just slide out. They probably have no back up plan if it fails but thank God they are replacing it this year
I’ve never seen a manual evac before… but i have seen evacs multiple times. We just fired up the auxiliary engine and ran the lift that way to get everyone off.
This happened to me when I was like 10, we were stuck for hours than we saw ski patrol and asked what happened and he said the lift broke I thought it meant chairs were falling off
Lol... lift evacs training, and the greasy ropes and harnesses, we never had the t bar set up, and weren't allowed to lift the bar until every one was leashed in... they sent up a harness for each person, with a leash, the harnesses were designed to easily fit, and adjust over the ski out fits. Everything was covered in grease from the well maintained cables...lol...
um...I can't feel my butt! that's ok...you'll just sit down when you get here. rescue groups are always fun to mess with😊they usully have a great sense of humor. It's the slide off the seat with numb legs that freaked me out....not the best feeling in the world but better than freezing!
We were actually one of the last chairs to be unloaded. They started from the top of the mountain and took over an hour to get to us at the bottom. Was a cold and windy day too to make it worse
Now imagine there are 200 people stuck on that lift and this is the rescue technique and speed ... not to mention when someone panics and cannot move, how will he get down?
😓 anyone else seen that movie "Frozen" (& No! not the disney one!!) i got instant flashbacks of it while starting this video. It's about skiers getting stuck on one of these but no one is there to help them... there is a blizzard coming in fast.. and there are... wolves around.. !! WATCH IT! 😃🍿 If you haven't. Most kiwis do a fairly good job of keeping themselves calm, so it makes it a bit easier. I heard a kiwi describe how he was riding his mountain bike home after the most destructive earthquake in a modern city - the roads were impassable to motorised traffic (Christchurch NZ) and the arterial road he was on had turned into a river of liquefied subsoil. His bike fell into a narrow crack and he was wearing those shoes which clip in to the pedals, the crack was stopping him twisting out and the mud was at neck level, and rising. Fortunately the aftershocks were coming fairly regularly, and one happened along and opened the crack, releasing him. He told the story as if it was a fairly interesting event in a moderately interesting day.
There must be good reasons why there isn’t 25 metres of rope ladder in a pouch behind the seat. If you had hundreds of rescues to perform in icy conditions maybe 75% could make their own way down quickly, allowing rescue crews to concentrate on the others. Admittedly, transition to rope ladders is always tricky, but skiers are generally fit and it’s not like it’s compulsory to take the ladder. If it was the choice between a 5 hour wait and a 5 minute wait, I’d take the ladder.
I feel like you could bring your own rope and just slide down it if it isn't like 6+ meters. Just pull it through the seat and once you're down take the rope with you
@@andrewhawthorne8434 LOL if that were the case then there would be no need to use a rope to be rescued from the chair lift...just raise the bar and fly away. D'oh!
The lift’s wire rope came off the tracks when high winds blew the chairs around. All the chairs had to be let down one at a time, each taking 10 or so minutes with about 30ish chairs to be let down. They started top of the mountain to the bottom and we were at the bottom, so we’re one of the last groups down
Back in the day (for me) we practiced this. Being a tall and muscular person it always used to annoy me that the tiniest women, hell bent on making a feminist point always wanted to be the one to lower me down. Half the time there were three of them with hands on belt or shoulders trying to keep themselves earthbound.
If this was me they’ll need to bring a ladder or something. I’m afraid of heights so this is a big no no. Hell no. There’s a reason why I don’t go rock climbing.
Have you ever tried going down a ladder which is 20 feet tall, hanging from a movable chair, in ski boots, with numb legs? This looks infinitely preferable and definitely much safer, to me.

The chances of getting hurt are probably higher. Especially with 40+ people on the lift.
