Have heard Lupoi refer to Winston as the rock of the defense. He's made some starts, I was suprised

You forgot Terrell and Lopa in the safety room. Last year the team depended on Tuioti, Purchase, Matayo and Winston, all either true or redshirt freshman at OLB. This year they're doing the same thing at safety with Flowers, Woodyard, Lopa and Turner to backup at safety. Solomon Davis played STAR in the spring game.

Lopa has real upside with that long frame. Terrell is a nickel so not a back end safety. But Lopa is a name I should mention more

i think top 5 is probably what they need to string together. especially since dan lanning has to overcome being a relatively young inexperienced coach. 3-4 top 5 classes, and keeping DCs and OCs for multiple years will probably get them a shot or 2 at a title!

I disagree that Oregon is going to go down from 44pts/gm. And I understand the reasons. One weather, and the other is the defensive quality of the conference. But I believe the defensive teams are actually propped up by average offenses, and average play calling.
But, if you look at Ohio State, 2022, and 2021, that would be the most comparable to what Oregon’s offense will be in 2024. And Ohio State 45.7ppg in 21, and 44.2ppg in 22. Even Michigan run happy offense, with an average quarterback in 2023 average 36ppg. I expect Oregon to easily blow teams out, and the games against Ohio State, and Michigan will likely be in the 30s. So I expect Oregon to actually average 44 PPG, or maybe improve that PPG.
And the second part that everyone talks about, as to why Oregon will have to play different… Is the weather. But I actually disagree with that point… Because I have experienced it firsthand.
I understand the argument that Cold weather is going to affect play calling… but I lived in North Dakota, and in Regina Saskatchewan for three years. The first thing I’ll say is the middle part of the country that is cold, is much drier, and therefore is not as cold in your joints/bones. When I came home for Christmas vacation several times, 20°F in Vancouver BC was colder than a windy -20°F in SK. And trust me… I got locked out of my house one time, while it was -40°, which is where Fahrenheit and Celsius are the same temperature.
Now, even though Oregon won’t have to worry about cold, truly being that cold… The people that live there will actually have a slight advantage. When I was exposed to -10° to -40° for several months… When it was 32°F … Everyone was wearing shorts so that is definitely advantage. They are just better at not feeling cold. In fact, they might even feel warm while they’re playing. But Oregon will actually see no difference based on their November games are actually colder on the bones, and joints… Since we have way more water in the air. The games the last couple years at home against Washington, and Utah are actually going to affect the ducks more than playing in Wisconsin, or Ann Arbor… With the dryer air.
Sorry for the long explanation… But I haven’t heard anyone explain the actual differences… Because if they had, they would understand that it’s really not going to affect Oregon.

I would argue, we need top 5 classes. The differences between top 5,10, and 20 are stark as we always mention.

The thing about that is that teams don't consistently need/take nearly as many players, some years as they do others... And I'd also argue that at that point, the transfer portal comes into play and has to be factored in... We don't have enough analytics about the portal yet... But it seems pretty obvious. Also consider: You don't see most of the dividends of a class in their true freshman year.

      @srajala42 Місяць тому +1

@ramspencer5492 that's why repeated classes are important, players need to develop. The teams that are consistent contenders all have one big thing in common, they recruit high school like crazy, top 5 classes year in and year out. Look at Alabama, Georgia, Ohio state, and Texas. Consistent, high grade high school recruiting, and that translates to on field performance.

See you had an interview with Addison lined up. He's a great example of not caring about stars, ducks think he's the best pass blocker in the class with great feet. The Lopoi/Lanning 3 star recruiting gems- Moore, Gardner

Winning a Natty without a top 10 recruiting class says a lot about the coaching staff...
I would start a good experienced 3* player from the portal over a 5* HS kid.

Remember this the ducks may end up with 5-10 more possessions per game with their better defense this year and the lack of fire power in the big. Really doubt many teams are going to run on the front 7. Do any of the big QB's scare you?

The composite of portal plus high school ranking may become the standard of measure. But we all want to a time where, Holy crap we need to find 2 new starting tackles in the portal, while the nil pays out the wazoo. Instead have high school guys groomed into place like Conerly

If Oregon can get over the hump with developing high rated kids, they will be all world. They have pretty good recruiting classes but they don't develop the kids the way they are suppose to. Donte Manning for example. 5 Star kid that has never been able to put it together. That is development. Since Chip, Oregon has not been able to develop kids at the level they need. They have recruited very well but most of their kids do not live up to their rankings and that has to do with development more than anything. Once they get that part of it they will be able to turn some of those 4 stars to 5 stars.

The first thing I’ll say is the middle part of the country that is cold, is much drier, and therefore is not as cold on your joints/bones. When I came home for Christmas vacation several times, 20°F in Vancouver BC, Seattle, and Portland, on my way to Eugene…it was colder with the cold coastal air, than the dry Midwest was. And trust me… I got locked out of my house one time, while it was -40°, which is where Fahrenheit and Celsius are the same temperature. But -20 to -40 was cold, but I’m telling you, the temps Oregon will experience in November…30°F in Eugene feels much colder than 15°F in Wisconsin, or Michigan, due to the dryer air. And trust me the home games against UW and Utah the last few years was way colder than the Midwest was at the same time. In fact… The Utah fans were complaining how much colder it was in Eugene, compared to Salt Lake City.
So yeah… I think 2024 will open a lot of peoples eyes to the talking points. We keep hearing on UA-cam, and on TV.
Sorry for the long explanation… But I haven’t heard anyone explain the actual differences…with real world experience between the two places…Because if they had, they would understand that it’s really not going to affect Oregon.
