A friend of mine just gave me a strat sx vintage series custom made. I was surprised at how well it played and sounded! I was looking for info and came across your video. Thank you for the demo and information!
Those are very good looking good sounding guitars yet their own personality. I would have no problem strapping this on for a gig. Great work again Shane!
I picked this guitar up about 6 months ago and I am extremely pleased. Here's some pros and cons from my experience with it: Pros: - The solid ash body and hardware has a high quality feel to it. - There's no fret sprouting (maybe the plastic edge around the fretboard helps with this? I like the way it looks too). - It sounds amazing. I normally plug it into my Focusrite Scarlett Solo (~$110 USD) and use BIAS FX as my amp (got it $50 USD on sale). I feel I can get some AMAZING quality sounds for
I’ve had an SX for the better part of a decade and it’s still just as amazing as I first got it, great look and feel with some fantastic tone. Would recommend for such a cheap grab.
I tried for ages to find a replacement Stratocaster for my first electric guitar that got stolen a few years ago and I found the cherry red one with the maple neck and Ive ordered another spare , it’s spot on out of the box , and I’m going to play her live with maybe a new pickup set and adjustment That’s has to say something about these guitars , I’ve been playing 32 years this September
Just as the Tele, sounds amazing. Looks good and sounds good and at that price! Any plans on trying out their Vintage series bass? The bassist in Khruangbin plays one, looks and sounds awesome.
Great tone from both. Finally a Mesa, I’ve been waiting for a long time for you to get your hands on the best amps made and you played it great!!! Hope you liked it and can do some reviews on others models. Thanks.
After 14 years of playing and spending money on gear, I got an sx tele for $130, added fender 50's tele pickups for $90, and picked up a pignose g40v used, also $130. Got a pretty damn good sounding guitar and tube amp for a little less than a classic vibe squier.
Hi Shane. I checked out the range of SX Strats and Teles at the same place in Melbourne as you got yours. They sounded ok but only one managed to stay in tune for a test run. The prices were cheap even for the good looking American Ash models. I then went to a Fender stockist and found a Tele Squier Affinity with a ding in the body which he let me have for $260 . I noticed that all the Fenders across the range stayed in tune. I am pleased with the Squier.
I just got an SX sst57 the other day, and I was really surprised of how it is made like that and set up with a floating trem that is usable even if the tremolo is the chinese made trem because it stays in tune really well. I had a squier strat with the same trem 15 years ago that i could not get in tune because of the same design tremolo but the one on my sx seem to work fine to my liking. Neck is made out of several pcs of maple that has been glued everywhere and cut into a neck, body is cheap basswood, but it is only 130+ dollars and i have to say compared to my other $2000 guitars, this one is at par.
Hi Shane, love your vids man! I own a harley benton st-90 (the swamp ash version of the strat style from hb). I have owned a classic vibe 60's in the past and I have to say the harley benton is just as good. I might pick up an sx in the future because of this vid though. The bang for the buck is crazy these days!
eertje01 You're Right, Brother!!! I Have 2 Harley Bentons (The Swamp Ash DLX & The Vintage White ST20) Over Whom I Almost Wept For Joy Because Of How Well They Sounded & Were Made! I Was Jonesing For A Squier Classic Vibe 50's Strat, But Its Price Jumped & NO ONE Had Them In Stock When I Was Ready To Buy. I'm Trying To Give Fender Another Chance, But I've Come Across SO MANY KickAss Budget Guitars (Plus Classic Vibe Availability Is STILL Shaky) Fender May Have Dropped The Ball...AGAIN! Mind You, I Have A Fender 50th Anniversary American Standard Stratocaster. Plus, Plus, The Price Of PLAYER, AMERICAN, VINTERA, ULTRA, Etc. Guitars Are OUTRAGEOUS Now! I Can Buy 3 SX's For LESS Than An PLAYER!!!
excellent playing Shane! i believe you could sell any guitar.I've got a SX vintage series 2010 Sharkfin with a long string length bridge saddle & trem arm,i only use it at local parties(don't want it stolen),a unique & well built guitar."Sharkie",10 yrs later: neck still straight, low action, intonation fine,SX *P-90s* still sound good thru a Blues jr..SX has good craftmanship, these guitars are beautiful besides playing & sounding great
I've been looking at the Harley benton strat and ended up here as comparison. Think I prefer this from looks alone . Although the harley benton deluxe in white and gold plate looks tasty
I've had two SX strats in the past, apart from maybe being a little thin I loved 'em. Compared to my Fujigen MIJ Fender, felt as good in the hand to play and couldn't fault them. Just about to pop for a third, they're very underated instruments.
I have this in lake placid blue. It plays great and feels very solid. I have an LP but want to use the strat for recording different tones. Would some Wilkinson vintage single coils be worth putting in this, or are the stock pickups around the same? Otherwise, I'm looking at a Tonerider pure vintage set. I plan to add copper shielding, a graphtech nut, and Fender locking tuners that I already have.
@@travelinman617 I did add the shielding. I also wanted a black pickguard, so I got the musiclilly pro fully loaded one to save having to solder it. Beautiful guitar for the price
Got mine in June same model but in the sunburst, wasn’t expecting much but am pretty impressed and good for the price, only thing needing replacing straight up is the nut & tuners but that’s to be expected in a Guitar in this price range
I have an SX Liquid, an eccentrically shaped electric with 3 P90s. I had to change out the jack, but otherwise a nice sounding and very playable guitar as well. Here because I'm debating picking up a used SX "Strat" - not that I need another budget strat!
Not a bad looking guitar! Just goes to show you can find a quality guitar without dropping a months pay!!! A great option for gigging as well!!!! Congratulations on your find Shane!!!!🤙🏾🤙🏾🎸🎸🎸✌🏾
Shane, is the fretboard on that rosewood or the new engineered wood? Funny how the use mint green pickguard etc but put a plain white trem cover at the back
I don't own either sx or cv guitars. I don't see any comparison between these Sx and squire classic vibe. Sound may be similar but quality is not. I have two sx strarts in my workshop at the moment along with a classic vibe strat. One sx getting a full size steel trem block upgrade along with thebcv strat. The trem in the cv strat went straight in with clearly better quality timber used and neatly cut cavities. The sx I have spent much time (equating to more money) routing and shaping the trem cavity to fit a full size trem along with full size pots. The wood seams softer in the one I worked on and uneven cuts and routs. The Sx guitars are great for what they are but in quality of materials and craftsmanship they don't compare to cv line. Not commenting on the sound difference because that is personal perception.
i had one in the past and the neck was bowed (maple), it still played ok, but that was early in the production i think they have stepped up their game because it didnt sound anything like the one he plays here. the value for money is inarguable but probably best to leave them as they are rather than take it apart, look at the other vid where he upgraded the pickup the standard one sounded way better. its a value for money thing, who wants to take their 2 or 3 thousand dollar guitar out to every gig when theres options like this that you wont cry if someone does a jimi hendrix and lights it on fire.
@Indo Surfer Hi. Yes it is a shed, but not in my back yard. I dont have a back yard and I live in a city with laws that dont permit use of loud machinery in residential areas. Wish it was as I would save on rent. 😉. It's shed attached to another business whom I rent from. Thanks for asking though. Enjoy your Sx. They are great guitars for the price.
I dunno sure where you live mate but here in Australia there is a significant price difference. CV strats are around $800. I just got an SX delivered to home for $175. I bought a Wilkinson trem with full steel block for $60 from Korea and we're good to go.

My SX seems to pop and boom a lot. It is as if the body under the stretch plate is hollow.. my skill is no where close to be able to enjoy playing my guitar. Any suggestions are welcome. It’s a beautiful guitar but I cannot get a good sound from mine.
I have this guitar in sunburst. The only difference I can find between it and my Mexican strat is the cheap plasticy tuners although they are actually pretty good tuners that hold in tune forever. Its the machine heads themselves that have a very plasticiness about them. The stock pickups on it are good high output pickups and the string thru body is a good point.... The sound and Harmonics are beautiful... Also same as u mine played beautiful straight out the box. I've used SX for about ten years and I've never yet had a bad one.... Nice vid. I just bought a lefty like yours. Had a lefty SX P-J Bass for years and it's been awesome which is why I went back for this strat to help flesh out the home studio. The neck doesn't look as nice yours (my engineered rosewood fretboard looks a little white washed). Also had to slightly adjust the truss rod and lower the saddles by 1.5mm. Will need to do something with the nut too as the strings are sitting a little too high but these are all easy tweaks. For $250, this is killer Will probably swap out the bridge for a MIM strat bridge as well as new electronics and pickups at some point. You planning on doing any mods on yours?
DMSProduktions Yeah, I picked one up last week but its got the engineered wood on the fretboard. Other than that they’re Ok. I still reckon their tele’s are the better value
i just purchased one of these on your advice. Great guitar, imo just edges out the affinity on sound and especially build quality..the only negative is the old style tuners, which i will change.
Of course get whatever you want but the vintage style tuners rule. Just clip the strings two tuner lengths up, and wind. They keep the sharp end of the strings away from your fingers.
