I have high functioning autism, and I always did. When I started preschool, I don’t think I was in a completely different class, but I was a special ed student with an assistant and the first time I took an iep. I stayed in preschool for 2 years, and prek was the last year of being special ed. Then in kindergarten, it was the first year of general education. I took my 2nd iep. In 3rd grade, I took my 3rd iep. Now I’m in 6th grade, and I’m taking my 4th iep. I also had an adaptive pe teacher until 5th grade. I took an adaptive pe test pretty recently, and I passed.

This is an excellent informative video. Thank you. I have a ASD 4th grader and his school doesn’t do a good job keeping us informed on anything

Would kids with an IEP or in SPecial Ed get a regular High School diploma or just a certificate?

Kids with IEPs or in Special Ed can absolutely still receive a high school diploma. It all depends on the types of classes that they take - e.g., a student would still need to fulfill the requirements for graduation like science and social studies classes. A student may have special education as main placement but goes to general education social studies classes with accommodations. Within the IEP, accommodations are slight changes made to help the student be successful, and still keep them on track for a diploma. Modifications, on the other hand, actually change the work the student is doing and disqualify the student from being diploma bound, so you want to be sure you are very certain about IEP. Communicate to your IEP team and allow them to help guide!

Key missing point: there is no such thing as (dichotomy) special education”student.” Gen ed *instruction* thrives when we reiterate that FAPE is about diversity.

I was ar my small town school. Its not good for normal kids. We have a big family who they can be around . My younger daughter who is autistic cant really sit for 8 hrs . She gets overwhelmed with too many noises and distractions. Im also not doing aba im not for that
