- In this video my wife joins me for her FIRST EVER backpacking trip for a 42.4 mile section hike of the North Country Trail at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The scenery is spectacular! How does she do on her first trip? Watch and find out!

Just found this video... I'm taking my wife on her first multi-day hike there in a few weeks. She has hiked but is nervous about the multi-days on trail. Hopefully Jen's experience will help her. Keep up the great videos.
I think the most important thing for a newer backpacker is foot care. Use Darn Tough socks with Body Glide on toes and heels to avoid blisters and keep the enjoyment level high.
Great job Jen you are a trooper banging out 13 mile days on your first backpacking trip. From my own experience I feel bad for you developing blisters. Hope that you enjoyed the adventure and won’t let the blisters prevent you from going on another adventure. 😊 ☮️
Great to see you with your wife. Great views and beautiful trail. Thanks for sharing.
Great job to her she rocked it! Gorgeous views. Hope to see her back out on the trails again.
For us life long east coast / west coast dwellers can I say how completely bizarre it is to see you walking along what looks like an ocean shore....the waves of FRESH water...except for the type of trees on the beach that could be the pacific. Amazing
Hello Jon! My wife and I just hiked the 42 mile pictured rocks as well, September 27-30, 2021. This was our very first hike, just like Jen's. We just loved it and the weather was so perfect. we can't wait to plan another one. Maybe some sections of the NCT. And we'd really like to do a hike next year somewhere out west. We have watched several of your videos and have really enjoyed them. I have even made my tent base based on your TYVEK video so thanks! Keep the videos coming. And any suggestions you have for us newbies on where to hike, please let us know. We hope Jen's first taste of backpacking/hiking was a favorable one, and you guys can do more together in the future.
One of my favorites is the Porcupine Mountains. If you’re going out west you may want to check out the Grand Tetons.
@@jonallenoutside we reside in Marquette, in fact 1/2 mile off the NCT. Very interested in the Teton and may check out porkies as well.
Great adventure video.
Great video Jon! Great to see you guys having fun!
Jon, Great trip to take Jen on for her first backpacking! It was fun to watch. I did that same trip this past June. I got a kick out your two different “perspectives”!
Great video Jon...nice to see both of your perspectives, very entertaining. I'm looking forward to making it up there myself. Enjoy the content on your channel.
Looks like you are hiking the North Country Trail. That is beautiful section along Picture Rocks. Jenn needs hiking shoes/boots like you have.
Yay Jennifer! Welcome to the channel. 40+ miles for a first trip is no joke. Good job. What do you think Jon? Is she one and done, or can she be persuaded to head back out?
She might go again if we can pick when to stop. You have to reserve campsites there so we were locked into our mileage.
Jon, for your next “local” trip, think about Isle Royale. It would be little bit of a more “advanced” trip with the trails being not as flat as pictured rocks. But nowhere near as rugged as the long trail you did. I did a 5 night, 6 day trip there this past July. I posted a video on my adventures.
Great video! Love it that your wife got out there with you and crushed it!
I do have a question for you that I haven’t been able to find in any of your previous videos… what brand of water bottle holder do you use on your shoulder strap? I also have a GG Mariposa but haven’t purchased a water bottle holder for it yet. Looks like the one you have on yours works out great with the GG configuration! Thanks for posting quality content and videos! Always enjoy them!
@jonallenoutside thanks for uploading this amazing video! I stumbled across your channel randomly while doing some poking around, thinking about planning a trip up north to hike this trail...
I know the weather is unpredictable, but since you are kind of from that area let me get your opinions on something if you don't mind...
What time of year do you think would be the best to hike this trail? I've heard a lot of horror stories about the bugs, which if I am being honest..had me nervous. I am planning on bringing my son with me (he will be 14 years old) and don't want the bugs to scare him off from backpacking. I was initially thinking of going in early spring, thinking this would avoid some of the warmer weather bugs..(plus the kids have their spring break from school)
Thanks in advance, and keep on keeping on!

@@arkansasalex7288 Spring or Fall for sure. My preference is Fall because the trail is less muddy. The window between September 15 and October 15 can be amazing. Be sure to check out my video where I review all the camping areas.
What tent is that you used? Planning our first hiking trip this summer and still deciding on tent and gear. Did the Chapel Beach loop last year and eager to do the whole thing.
ZPacks Duplex. It’s an ultralight two person tent. Great if you do a lot of long distance trails, but I’d recommend something like the Big Agnes Fly Creek or Tiger Wall if you’ll be doing trips of a week or less.
What were the dates you were on trail?
I don’t recall the exact dates but it was late September. That’s a great time to go.
Where you park and started from?
There are visitor centers at both ends where you can park. The shuttle picks you up at either one. We parked at the western end and started at the eastern end.
Question to Jen: are you thinking of doing another backpacking trip? You should have more of a say in how long you will hike each day.
I’m open to another trip. You had to pick the campsites in advance for this one. We talked about next time maybe a place where when you want to stop, you can.
Question for Jennifer - How were the privies? :-)
Girl to girl - they were OK. The one at Potato Patch was a bit exposed, but no digging holes which is nice.
@@jonallenoutside thanks! We will be there in a few weeks. Appreciated your videos!
Nice video. No more sharing the beautiful spots we have in Michigan🤫
Problem 1 is that her pack seems to be bigger than yours....I don't like ur chances so far but Im watching - your wife is lovely
She’s a warrior!
