Oh, yes. I've heard that the USSR suffered more casualties in WWII than any other country. Sorry for your losses. That must have been an incredibly awful time.
My parents came here to escape the Fascists in Spain. So many of us here are refugees or the sons & daughters of refugees from that time.

I guess it depended where you lived. London sure caught hell. I don't think that Hastings had any particular strategic significance, contained no iconic British landmarks such as Canterbury. Nightly bombings still lit up the sky & here, a few errant Germans.
