Everybody else Joel has to kill gets left where they are. Henry and Sam get the respect of a decent burial.
The difference is that Joel didn't kill Henry or Sam, so he can't compartmentalize their deaths the way he could when he takes a life.
@@DavidB-2268 It wouldn't have mattered. Had he been the one to pull the trigger he'd still have done right by their remains.
@joe t It's impossible to say for certain, but it's used as a way to show both Ellie's hardening resolve to prevent future infections, and Joel's softening, and allowing himself to feel.
The Bill and Frank episode tugged at my heartstrings for sure. It was sad to lose them, but this was so much sadder. Bill and Frank had years of happiness together and went out on their terms. Henry and Sam were so young and never knew safety and security. Henry was such a great big brother but in those seconds between killing Sam and himself, he must have felt he failed Sam completely.
So true. So heartbreaking!! 😔
One of the things I found really interesting as well from this episode is how we, as the viewer decode visual and audio cues. Normally I tend to be fairly unfazed by traumatic events in television shows and movies because there is always this underlying realization that it is all fictional. However, most reactions -- my own included -- to this episode that I have seen have a similar reaction to Henry' suicide and Ellie' response, is different. Everything in your brain is telling you that the reaction is genuine. It's weird and amazing how the human brain functions.
Part of it is showing Ellie's face when Henry... and lingering there while Joel is heard saying "Oh god."
@14:35: *exactly* the expression of 1/2doz neuro grad students all 'round my bed after waking up from a seizure 😔😑
I am so happy they didn’t show Henry unaliving himself-it just cuts to Ellie’s reaction. Bella’s scream/whimper they let out was so heartbreaking. One thing I also really loved is how, in contrast to episode 1 where Joel just threw the deceased child into the fire, completely detached and numb, here, he takes the time to bury Henry and Sam. You can tell that their deaths both traumatized both Ellie and Joel (Joel was probably thinking of his brother Tommy, and Ellie had just found a friend/“little brother” figure and lost him in such a violent way, as well as she clearly has abandonment issues and is terrified to end up alone). Last thing, whenever Joel glances at his watch, he’s thinking of his daughter Sarah: when Ellie and Sam are playing soccer, you can see he subtlety glances at it-in the game, it’s shown that Sarah used to play soccer as well. 💔
Completely agreed! This show has been made so beautifully (as far as I've seen... still have a few eps to go, but have no doubt it will continue to get better and better!)
Lamar and Kievonn were fantastic as Henry and Sam. There is a nice HBO Plus short behind the scenes of this episode on youtube. The cast and crew really took to welcoming young Kievonn and being able to communicate with him.
The Kansas City tunnels/caves are pretty interesting. One basically operates as a small town for businesses now that need a stable temperature to operate. The main complex is called Sub Tropolis. 10 mile railroad, multi-lane highway for trucks all underground.
Thank you!!! I’ll check this out 😊
Something i appreciated about the show, is how Joel's reputation over the decades since the outbreak is something many fear, even Marlene. Joel doesn't think about his reputation or how others perceive him, he is just living in the moment, in survival mode. No spoiler, if you haven't finished watching the series, but it comes into play later.
I haven't finished it yet! I'm being honest and legitimately watching it the first time through while I'm filming! Filming ep 6 later this week 😊
I'm being careful to avoid spoilers.
And I really appreciate it 🙏❤️
Just throwing this out there…I think Henry grabbed the gun because of the instinct to protect his brother. He didn’t know Sam was infected, and was asleep when they burst in the room, so he didn’t have the luxury of properly processing anything.
Once he had a few seconds to work everything out, he did the only thing he could.
Great point!!!!
The real heart tugger is that sam possibly turned away from ellie because he knew he might attack her if he saw her. Turning his back made him "unaware" of her precence given that he cant hear her.
Omg what a good point. Even more heartbreaking 💔
Perry the guy who works for Kathleen is Jeffrey Pierce he is Tommy in the games, they changed sam from the game, sam is not deaf and is about the same age as Ellie but the only thing thats the same is Henry killing Sam then himself. The game also wrecks you as well.
Not sure how different the second season will be from the second game, but I just realized some foreshadowing done in this episode & it preemptively breaks my heart for what’s to come.
Ooooh! I can’t wait to see more! No spoilers, friend! 😝
fantastic information! you make me smile, Doctor. (and given what we are watching with you, that's saying a LOT) thank you.
Thank you so much!!! That was so sweet ❤️
10:25 Welcome to Kansas City .
I really enjoyed this reaction. I hope your channel grows.
Thank you!! ❤️
The ending of this episode mirrors the end of episode 2: there, Joel is shut down, walking away while Ellie stands there, still processing what happened with Tess. Here, we see Joel doing the processing, while burying Henry and Sam, while Ellie is suddenly mission-focused, walking on west, leaving Joel behind.
Good catch!! I didn't connect the two... I think I'll need to re-watch this season start to finish after I finish doing my reactions, so I can catch all the stuff I missed on the first watch through 😊
10:42 BLOATER!!!! 😂
Haha I looked it up after! I had no idea what they were called when I first watched the episode! And these reactions are honest - my first time watching it! 😊
you seem like a sweet, compassionate person
Great reaction as always. Tough episode omg.... Also, you looked great today Jess :)
aww thank you so much! ❤️
Jumping in with the usual reminder of just how little time has passed for Joel and Ellie. If the first time we see Joel in the Boston QZ is Day 1, the death of Henry and Sam is Day 8. (Between the worry over Tommy, losing Tess, Bill, and Frank, meeting and losing Henry and Sam, and bonding with Ellie and learning they're going to be together for awhile with all that triggers in Joel, it's a lot. Also, it's near the 20th anniversary of the Outbreak (Joel's 36th Bday, 9/26) and of Sarah's death technically the next day. There's a good chance it's within these 8 days.
(To geek out, Bill's letter is dated 8/29/23, his timer is described in the script they released as 600 hours, we don't know when Bill set it for the last time, but his last opportunity was dinner time on 8/29/23. 600 hours later would be the evening of 9/23 at the latest. We heard it start playing (Depeche Mode "Never Let Me Down Again") on Tess and Joel's apartment radio after they'd left the QA with Ellie. This is day 2 of the 2023 events, 9/23 at the latest. If this WAS 9/23, the anniversaries fall during the road trip and KC day 1.If the music played was 9/22, the anniversaries fall on KC days 1-2. If the music plays any earlier, then KC day 1 is before 9/26 -- but Joel says he's 56 on that day. He certainly could mean "almost 56." But I think we can only push our 2023 day 1 back a couple of weeks or so given the autumn leaves in Boston and the condition of the abandoned meal on Bill and Frank's dining room table. This would mean the anniversary hits a a couple of weeks into Ellie and Joel's journey from KC.)
Love this breakdown! Thank you! You’re so right - it’s a lot to go through and even begin to process in such a short time! Not to mention - dealing with this older severe trauma too 💔
@@JessTheMD And for Ellie, she was bitten only 3 weeks before meeting Tess and Joel. Just being bitten, expecting to turn, and not doing so would be a lot for anyone, before adding the experience of being confined by the Fireflies, groomed for her "purpose", and everything else we see happen. Or will see happen related to that bite.
The game is as heartwrenching because, as the player, you are fighting your way through the entire game. You are completely invested in keeping Joel and Ellie alive. You come to love so many of the other characters you meet and experience sorrow, rage, frustration, sadness, and despair as they all die before your eyes. Throughout the game, Joel and Ellie are the last of us.
There's so much. So many emotions!! 😔
