I wish Harmony Gold wasn't still involved with Macross. The company is so shady and I'm amazed they aren't out of business by now. I have the entire Macross series on Blu Ray with subtitles so I don't care about this but I hope that people will finally see some of the good stuff like Macross Plus and the 84' movie.

While HG and it's chariman Frank Agrama have been historically been a-holes of the highest caliber, this change in direction regarding their stance about "ownership" of the rights to Macross characters can be treated as as good sign. Heck, maybe they'll eventually let up on the Battletech franchise as well, seeing as they've lost that legal issue so many times already.
The only reason they still exist is because they failed at everything else so they became a reality company. A reality company owns the rights to japans second biggest anime next to gundam

To be fair ROBOTECH is actually pretty good. It’s the company that SUCKS. Also I really like the Palladium Books RPG which adds a ton of really interesting EU. The real issue is the stupid Cold War stand off that stops us from having both.
This legal battle was more intense than all macross and robotech battles combined.
Robotech is ostensibly to Macross what Power Rangers is to Super Sentai. We were lucky that Macross Plus slipped through into the west with an english dub, not to mention the out of print ADV dub of the original Macross series to reflect the original context released in the mid-2000s.
Dubs of Macross Do You remember Love? (via Omni Productions) and Macross II (via U.S. Renditions) were also available in the 90s.
Robotech was good
There's already precedent that both the Japanese source material and their westernized versions can both be successful. Those precedents being Power Rangers/Super Sentai and Kamen Rider Ryuki/Dragon Knight. I don't see any reason Macross and Robotech can't do the same now that Big West and Harmony Gold have sorted out their issues.

@@deshawn4077 I loved watching Robotech in the 80s as there was nothing better on TV. Immediately fell out of love with it in the 90s when I watched fansubs of the original SDF Macross and parts of SDC Southern Cross and saw how horrifically butchered it was.
I hope Big West picks another distributor for Macross-specific stuff overseas.
While I don't mind Harmony Gold having their rights over Robotech, I don't like the idea of them getting away with all of this after doing so much damage in all these years...

Robotech does have a long overarching story that spans 3 different anime. And ine of those anime is mospeada which is cool but macross has a better story and mech designs but I still love both of them equally
Project Aces making a Macross game would be the only logical conclusion.
The main difference between the arcady AC series and Macross is the transforming fighter jets into robots in Macross.
I think that a Macros s game would be the perfect time to reinvent Ave Combat Assault Horizon's gameplay.
Consider: while the game itself was underwhelming, it featured helicopter gameplay that could easily be translated into the Gerwalk mode, and the quicktime evasions could be the prompt for transforming between modes.
The only thing you would need to add is a first person shooter element.

They were only available in Japan because Japan has a far less prude version of Nudity. In one American scene Min Mei and Rick are trapped and "playing house". Min Mei is showering (the American version blanked this out). In the Japanese version, Min Mei is seen naked and clearly naked.
In Southern Cross Dana Sterling (daughter of Myriad and Max Sterling) is taking a shower. The scene is very clear that she is naked and the scene is giving you the full view.
American censorship would not allow this. You must get the Japanese version.
@@davidgiles4681 AFAIK that is from Macross: Do You Remember Love (Or Macross: DYRL for short). That entire movie is thought more of as being not part of the anime series AFAIK. But yea, that's "tame" compared to the other scenes in the movie that were cut out.

Harmony Gold should only had to rights to the original Macross as that's the agreement they signed. Future endeavors are just that, future and could be licensed to anybody. There's plenty of animes where one season is licensed to one company and another is to a different company. How Harmony Gold managed to say they own the rights to the entire Macross universe is beyond me.
They couldn't. They had a signed contract with Harmony Gold, and Robotech is the only thing that makes Harmony Gold money, so they're never going to let that contract end.
@@noneofyourbusiness4616 The signed contract was only for Macross and only Macross. That's why Manga got the rights to Macross Plus and Macross II. Then Harmony Gold came up with the idea that they owned the rights to the entire Macross universe. Series such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Slayers and Ikki Tousen prove that multiple companies can own the rights to a series as ADV had the rights to Eva TV series and Manga had the rights to the movies, now it's Funimation with the newer movies and Discotek with the TV series but streaming rights belong to Netflix. Slayers was owned by Funimation and ADV and Ikki Tousen is owned by Funimation for seasons 1, 3 and 4 while Anime Works owns season 2. I still have no idea why and how they managed to say the contract they signed was for the entire Macross universe.
The world was once again at peace. And thanks to them, it seemed it would last forever.

This sounds like a truce, not a win. Harmony Gold is still involved, which means they will compromise eveything.
The anime is all available online anyway. I just want the merchandise (Bandai DX Chogokin, Hi-Metal-R) to be released outside of Japan.
Battletech straight up won the suit against them. And have figures that again resemble their old designs.

To be fair Harmony Gold didn't have much of a choice in terms of making Robotech. The American syndication market at the time only allowed shows to be sold in packages of at least 65 episodes (one 13-week season, 5 weekdays per week). They could not have sold Macross as-is. They could conceivably have tried to sell all three shows untouched as a three-show package, but that was a harder sell to TV executives who normally looked at buys on a show-by-show basis. This is the same reason Voltron combined two unrelated shows. There are other examples (like Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years, with its incomprehensible plot that makes Robotech look like a faithful adaptation in comparison)
For a while here in the US a few years ago by some feat of magic you were able to watch the original SDF Macross subbed on Amazon Prime Video. This makes me wonder if since Harmony Gold is still gonna have a disruption say, here in the US & Canada the platform may end up being Amazon which has been acquiring a fair bit of anime for a while now. I cannot be happier a deal was reached though, Macross is by far my favorite franchise over any medium.

This is great news indeed! I have to admit, it was through Robotech I got exposure to Macross. I never finished the second and third part of Robotech, but I watched both SDFM and Robotech season 1. I prefer SDFM of course. But I see Robotech can have a potential great IP if Sony decides to go continuing working with the live-adaptation. But maybe not call it Robotech nor Macross, because of confusion mainstream audience will get. Reimagine it with new names for the characters and a title. But use the core story of SDFM. Giant transformable jets to mechs fighting giant humanoid aliens, and a touch of strong love story with singing. Transformers and kaiju movies proves there is a audience out there for Macross.
I ended up just binge watching Genesis Climber Mospeada in its original Japanese form. I think even Harmony Gold provided that.
Super Dimensional Southern Cross though I dont think I ever finished that. That anime had a lot of development problems in Japan
@@budgiecat2885 I'm in the minority but I did enjoyed Southern Cross a lot. Liked the Bioroid designs. Mospeada was a fun watch, but I didn't like how they concluded the show.

.. as far as i know, in this case, transforming fighter jet (into Gerwalk and humaoind Battroid) is belong to Big West' trademark, not Harmony Gold.. (for Harmony Gold) making live action movie based on this mecha (Valkyrie) won't as easy as just take it for free based on claims.. HGold don't own the IP, designs, etc. They just own the distribution right (outside of Japan) ..
So this could mean I'll probably be able to catch up with the whole franchise in Germany? Sounds sweet.

HG also lost a long standing lawsuit against Catalyst game labs which brought the hidden mechs back to battletech.
I Now REGULARLY rock a Marauder, Marauder II C (thats the Clan variant), a Locust, a Thunderbolt, an Archer, and a Rifleman in MWO, thanks to the original and forward lawsuits being thrown out of court with prejudice the Unseen mechs are now part of the games again.
I love Robotech. If you grew up in the 80's, you had a damn good childhood watching that show. If it weren't for Harmony Gold seeing the potential of bringing Anime to the U.S. We wouldn't of had alot of the cartoons of that era translated into english.
I grew up with knowing about Robotech but didn’t really see the show since I was interested in Pokémon not much Mecha Anime until recently lol
Man Harmony Gold was just a contractor. They didn't have any special insight. They just wanted to keep their cash cow going as long as possible.
They werent the first though. I mean obviously in the 60's you had Speed Racer (brought over by Tatsunoko), Astro Boy and Gigantor. Then in the 70's you had Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers), Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets) brought in by Sid & Marty Croft, and Force Five (Great Mazinger, Getter Robo G, Danguard Ace, Gaiking and Daimos) brought in by Jim Terry productions. And in the 80's you also had Time Bokan and Golion (Voltron) brought in by World Media Events.
In fact, the fact that Speed Racer and Toke Bokan were already brought over is probably what motivated Tatsunoko to also bring over SDF Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada which combined into Robotech.
So it was really Tatsunoko's doing.
Next year is The 40th aniversary of The franchise. Expect a new anime maybe.
Hopefully it goes the opposite of where Delta went. To me Macross Plus and Zero were the franchises peak.
@@bl8danjil Delta really sucked. It was more like to promote idol music instead of giving a well developed Love story mixed with War. They tried to copy Macross 7 but that epically failed. With western market in vision they need to plan better.

Take Macross Plus. It dealt with conflicts over artificial intelligence, weapons without human control, and the struggle Zentraedi faced in rejecting their battle lust.
In short, my own opinion is that while I don't care much for what I have seen of it, Delta makes sense in canon, because short of just going from one war story to another like Gundam is just not how this universe is.
The only reason the Vajra conflict became a galaxy wide C.F. Is because of deliberate manipulation of those creatures by rogue scientists.
I still give Robotech it's respect, because it led me to SDF Macross. But I feel Macross is far better. Harmony Gold brought too much drama on licensing and basically ruining the series themselves. I still bought the series twice, on VHS and the DVD box set. I want more Macross!

First, I want to be up front. I'm a huge Robotech fan. It's my first "love", you can say, and also help get me into anime. With that said, I also love Macross. I have the dub stuff that made it over here. And yes, I managed to get ahold of a sub version of Frontier. I consider Macross and Robotech to be cousins of sorts. That's just my opinion though. I'm also happy to hear that we will be able to get official Macross stuff, hopefully dubbed. Now to get to what I wanted to say. You don't know all the facts about how and why Robotech came into being. You see, back in the day, they couldn't just bring over any shows from Japan, or for that matter, put any show on, if they wanted to put it into sydnication. You had to at least, 60 episodes. Macross only has 36. So they had to do what they did in order to get Macross over here. It was also not the first. It was done to several others also. Though, with Robotech, it was one of the last. After that we started to get, what we have today. Hopefully this clears things up a little.
Shoji Kawamori, the screenwriter and original mech designer of Macross designed the ASF-X Shinden II which is based off of the MQ-9 Ghost Drone from Macross that we see in Macross Zero
Harmony Gold is also the reason we don't have more Mechwarrior games.
New one drops this yr. Battletech computer game been out for awhile now. HG lost the suit and Battletech makes figures resembling the old ones.
About time they finally come to an agreement I just hope any Macross game that comes overseas gets a PC port; I don't have consoles anymore. As for Ace Combat I have skins downloaded from Nexus for my F-14D specifically Hikaru's VF-1J and Max's VF-1S DYRL.

I tried playing those PS1 and PS2 Yamato games. Normally I can get by most Japanese games I play with little to no knowledge of the language but those were practically impossible lol

Seeing as how SRW games arent localized to the West anyway, Im not even sure why they stopped being included.

They're localized to Asia regions (Hong Kong/China/Thailand/Malaysia) and because of that, they've included the option for English since obviously those countries dont speak Japanese. But its all really been a recent thing theyve been doing within the past 5 or 6 years I'd say. So unless Harmony Gold's license restrictions carried over outside North America and Europe and extended its way over to Asia region as well (doubt it), I dont think it mattered if they had Macross or not. I mean HG has had that license restriction since 1985 so what wasnt stopping Bandai from putting Macross stuff in SRW before?

Great news...ultimately the best way to handle these things is to just do business and work together. Fun fact, Macross 2 and Macross Plus were allowed releases in the US way back when. Not sure about the history behind that...either they worked out a deal with HG at the time or HG didn't realize that they could block the franchises until after those releases.
Finally, the two series can live in peace....I hope.
(For the record I do like Macross, I just slightly prefer Robotech)
Uta-Macross getting English Patch and release in the global app store I can see happening, but man would I want Macross 30 to be rereleased with English, because from what I know some elements in 30 are really cool actually(and has the VF-30 Chronos, which remains on of the most pretty Variable Fighters)

Not really. It's because Harmony Gold filed their insidious trademarks on the "Macross" name, "UN Spacy" and its logo in several regions and countries. The international distribution license they acquired from Tatsunoko only covered the original Macross series and the sequels or spin-offs.

Here's a question, before all this, the UK and Australia won court cases where Macross specific merch could be sold in those countries, the British Museum stocked Delta statues of all things and we also got a one off niche theatrical presentation of the Plus movie, so subbed only (wasn't able to attend alas!) so I wonder if that would help speed along merch distributions? Third party sellers like Ebay have much more Macross figures and statues at half the usual price in the UK.
Still not over. The most important series in the franchise, the original macross still isnt gonna be released in any foreseeable future

Finally! I get to watch some Macross!
At last! I can't believe it! I need an updated 1/3000 SDF-1 toy TV series stylised.
The original Macross was released on DVD by ADV films, as well as Macross II and Macross Plus. I just think anything after that (Basically Macross 7 and onward) had been restricted. But Ill definitely support any physical media releases that come out in the future. Looking forward to it.
Ace Combat Fan gets some of the details wrong, or at least glosses over them considerably. Back in the 80's HarmonyGold bought the international rights to distribute and merchandise the TV series SDF Macross through Tatsunoko Productions. Tatsunoko got the international rights from Big West as part of their agreement in animating the series. In the 90's we got DYRL, Macross II and Macross Plus via other companies because they were not covered under HG's rights to ONLY the TV series. The ADV dub (and the AnimEigo sub before that) of the original series were released in partnership with HarmonyGold.
However, in the late 90's/early 00's HarmonyGold suddenly decided that they owned ALL of Macross. That's when they began blocking all other Macross sequels and spin-offs, the videogames, the toys, etcetera. This was central to the disagreement between Big West and HarmonyGold. BW asserted that they owned international rights to all the Macross sequels and spin-offs, not HG. At the time there were plans to bring Macross Plus toys to the US, plans that got scrapped because of HG.
In the late 00's, early 10's, Tatsunoko took BigWest to court over who owned Macross internationally. Tatsunoko being who HG got their rights from. Tatsunoko lost that case and Big West's ownership of Macross internationally was established by the court (although, Tatsunoko did win domestic Japanese rights to the original TV series). Still, HG maintained that they alone owned Macross outside of Japan, leveraging trademarks etc to make any attempt by Big West to release any new Macross outside of Japan a costly and time consuming prospect.
All they had to do was, make one of them into an alternate Universe! Some people have trouble thinking outside the box!

Unfortunately, probably not. The new license agreement doesn't cover the entire Macross catalog and Harmony Gold continues to control the DYRL film as well as the original series. It would be nice though to finally get it.

Well, I don't know about all the politics and drama, but I grew up watching "Robotech" series from Harmony Gold, that is all I knew for a long time until I found out about Macross in Japan.....

I like Robotech, but I'm glad this means we'll likely get English dubs of Macross.
Oh yeah... English dub for Macross Frontier and a much better and faithful English dub for Macross Do You Remember Love?

TUBI - free (commercial/as supported like television commercial spots) has Macross and Robotech.
I had to double check the posting date and make sure this was not an April Fool's joke.
so I can get a replacement for my VHS copy of DYRL and missing Macross + DVD's, will they be the old dubs or will we get fresh dubs?
Macross Plus did get a US release through Manga USA. That was however the only Macross title that did get through the decades long blockade.

Studio Nue created Macross. Big West was a distributor who came in later.
While yes, Harmony Gold is an American company... It hasn't been owned by any Americans since forever.
It's owned by Italians through an Italian company.
Harmony Gold pretty much moved into Real Estate and was investigated by US authorities at one point.
They couldn't find enough to bring charges, but the Italian authorities DID find enough to bring charges against the Italian parent company and its owners.
Though not all charges stuck due to Statue of Limitations.
But I would imagine a new leadership has been since installed in the Italian parent company or Harmony Gold went independent.
My god,finally my dream came true,ever since I was young...I loved both and now I get to see both of them come back...for the last time in my life.
But Harmony gold was going to continiue Genesis climber Mospeadia or Robotech the new generation.
Take the flight combat from ace combat and the ground combat from titan fall 2 and use a open Feild like battlefield design for the playing fields and have the transformations of the veretechs as a sort of button press like an ability
I have Macross, released by Harmony Gold, a boxed set, I've had it for years. I also have Robotech, and yes I've seen the differences.
I wonder if maybe Big Sky threatened to go after the rights of Robotech. That would have brought Harmony to the table.
