What mix of cement sand would you use to connect the old ceramic pipe? Mine's been knocked during excavation and is leaking! Thanks
Thank you for putting this information out there. It has been very helpful. In my 120 year old house they never capped off the old sewer line (mortar joint style) when they added on to the house and built a new bathroom. After roots clogged the mainline my crawlspace flooded with sewer water. Now I have fixed everything, but I still have to cap off the bell end of 4" vitrified pipe. Any suggestions anyone?

For some reason the city of Chicago requires clay sewer pipe so that's what we run
@Jason Born it is? Where is that information? Why would it leach underground? I have done this work for a living (20+ years)and have never seen the appearance of leaching SDR pipe. Is it undetectable visually?
VCP is mostly use for sanitary sewer applications. The natural properties of VCP make it uniquely suited to high-sulfur, high-abrasive, and high-demanding
environment of a sanitary sewer.

Big cities use clay because they have seen the track record and return on investment. "Newer" "little" towns get swindled into accepting plastic pipe.
If you are a contractor you do not want to handle a heavier building material.
Contractor associations lobby the cities. The cities figure that the contractors know what is best but they really want to make the most money with the least effort.
The two sides of the argument for PVC against clay are due to climate change concerns, three years ago it was almost solved in congress by one man, Donald Trump, now look what’s happened, an enormous uprising, a stolen election, this is a war that will never be decided.

Interesting video, but I think I will stick with PVC.
Because you do not understand the science. Go to the bathroom and look for PVC. Everything in there is ceramic. Tiles, commode & urinal. PVC will fail. No structural integrity and not chemical resistant. Do you also think vinyl siding is better than a brick facade?

Speaking to the topic though, clay is the best material available for sanitary sewer pipe. This is fact. Scientifically proven fact.
PVC for sewers is the choice of the lazy or ignorant. I am sorry to deliver this news to you.

Clay has porous surface, it tends to attract tree roots. Roots ultimately cause the pipe to crack. It is not science, it is biology.
How strong is the cray pipe ,if I need to do a pipe bursting to install HDPE pipe ,what kind of pulling force do I need to burst the old clay pipes .
I got a question. What do I backfill if this sewer pipe is removed, due to abandonment? Would top soil be ok or would I need sand, small rocks, or a mix. Let me know. thank you :)
Local codes aside you can fill with whatever, up to your last 4-6 inches you probably want topsoil if you are going to have grass there.

The yellow material is call Speed Seal, it is composed of a two part polyurethane mixture.

If your drinking water arrives via gravity it could be. Some wine makers are re-purposing large clay pipes for aging wine. Before oak barrels and stainless steel silos it was clay tanks for wine.
