- Our car lovers, Vaishali from India (motorsport journalist) and her German husband Ronny (parallel parking champion) this time choose an infamous classic car in the vintage hotspot "Classic Remise" in Berlin. Both fall in love with the Peugeot 604, one of Erich Honecker's state cars. For 18 years he was at the head of the GDR, until shortly before the dissolution of the East German state.
The 604 was first delivered in March 1975. It already had four disc brakes. Ronny explains how to brake this old state car safely. An old diesel with outdated exhaust emissions. Today these limousines are a dying species, 40 years ago they were the big hit.

My grandpa used to have a black one here in South Korea when I was a little boy and it was made by Kia!! Kia motors used to manufacture that car under license from Peugeot from 1979 to 1981. During late 70s, the CEO of Kia wanted to make world class luxury cars but they didn't have a good environment for that. At the same time, Peugeot was looking for a manufacturing facility in Asia. Therefore, their interest fell into the same place and they established a partnership together. Rigjt after that, Kia started manufacturing some Peugeot vehicles here including 604. I heard that Kia manufactured Peugeot vehicles with such a great passion and they were able to supply some of them in Europe. At first, Peugeot engineers had a big doubt if Kia would make Peugeot vehicles well but as they tested those cars, they were surprised that those Kia made Peugeots had such great quality!! Therefore, they ended up approving Kia engineers and it seemed like Kia was going to grow much bigger. However, Kia's happiness didn't last long because they got screwed real bad by the Korean government in 1981 because Kia was forced to make nothing but trucks and SUVs and Hyundai was forced to make nothing but sedans which was such a stupid policy of course!! Therefore, Kia had no choice but discontinuing all of their sedans including Peugeot vehicles. Yeah, that was such a shame that they had to let go of such a very nice car like that. Recently, there are only about 5 Peugeot 604s remaining here in South Korea. Wonder if that car in the video was made in Korea too :)
Kia also manufactured the Fiat 132 under license at the same time.

Always admired the 604...

I had 2 of these beautiful cars circa 1986-88 and yes it was a very, very smooth ride indeed. The 2.5V6 was exceptional.

You should test this or any 50s to 80s Pug on rough roads not a smooth race track to see the car perform at its best.

@@mantabond because their long travel, supple suspension allows high point to point speeds on really bad roads, in great comfort.

Peugeot 504s, 505s and 604s with IRS are a blast to induce power/torque over-steer (trait of vehicles with Rear semi-trailing arms).....once you figure-out how to transfer the weight and load the vehicle up............donuts and doing corners at high speed are a complete blast.
Here in the USA; I have a 5 Speed 1987 505 S Turbo Gas,once on boost, the thrill begins. Last 5 speed 604 TD I had ( it got rear-ended in the mid 1990s)...even that gutless engine could do crazy donuts....don't be alarmed by the body-shell leaning on it springs/bump stops.... just mildly soft Springs doing their thing.
