DIY H-bot Plotter (Raspberry Pi Pico)

- Simple CNC plotter that can draw and burn wood. Made with Raspberry Pi Pico and Python.
This project took me 3 months to finish but I spent a lot of that time studying at the university. I learned sooo much while building this project and I hope that it will be helpful for some of you! By taking the look at my Python code (it's not perfect but it works) you can learn the basics of CNC machines and it's also a nice and simple example of H-Bot based construction.

Additionally, there are smaller cool things like custom PCB machined on Dremel CNC with FlatCam and BCNC, some cool drawing on paper and burning wood with Versatip which turned out great and I think it's a pretty unusual use for such a thing. Sure lasers are more precise but those produce a completely different result same thing with a pyrograph.
Above you can find links to the files, code and parts I hope you like this project, share your thoughts in the comments!

That was a long break but I am back and I am working on some new videos! Thanks for watching and have a nice day!
Can you please work on IndyMill , 4th and 5th AXIS Please?
Do you have any plan?
I'm so glad UA-cam finally decided to notify me about this.
Glad to see your amazing progress on this project!
Thanks!
Bresenham's algorithm. That brings back memories. I implemented it 40 years ago in Z80 assembler. Wow, scary how time flies.
Very interesting, I actually made a wood burning plotter tool for my own plotter half a year ago. Fun to play with.
Fun project and I always love to see the indymill working, IM producing on mine now, it's nice
He's back! Finally graduated this spring, I feel ya on the university haha. Cool project man keep it up!
Congratulations! Thanks a lot!
Good project!!! I have been going to my maker space for about five or six years. My third project was a draw bot made from optical drives. I made it and didn't know how to use it. lol. It used GRBL. Now I know how to make CNC machines.
literally, you have put so much effort into this project
I appreciate the progression in your videos from an idea to an idea that partially works to an idea that is fully developed and consistently works. Is the next step a 3D printed, automatic tool (pen) changer for color plots?
Hi Nico. You can try a laser for cut or engraving. Your design is optimal for that.
Perfect timing! I just bought the gas burning thing last week. LOL.
This was the first project that I thought about in 1st year of engineering.
Wow, excellent work 👍
Thanks!
You are the king of DIY!
A little bit different version of dremel CNC is on process. Excluding some problems that your dremel CNC faced. Thanks for this machine idea.✌🏻
Great challenge! Congratulations! Greetings from Brazil
Try to use a laser engraver for this. And/or try to design a holder for that tip wich works like the wheels of the cart in the shopping center. Holds the tip in a little angle and always pulling. It neeeds a little programming for the turning, but it could work.
I was waiting for so long
Super
13:52 this is so beautiful
Elite content mate!
Thanks a lot!
Super 👏👏
Fajny ploter :D aż się prosi o glowice laserową
Fantastic
Nice video as ever. May I suggest for your next project something about lighting your lab a bit more?
Thanks a lot! I am using some filmmaking lights at my workshop and I don't have space for anything like that at home :D
@@nikodembartnik this is a challenge for you and your video will be even nicer
Hey Nikodem, i just finished building my dremel cnc and wang to thank you for providing this project. I am currently experimenting with machining aluminium, but am having some trouble. In your video you cut it efforesly at what looks to be like 1mm deep, while my 500watt spindle is alrrady having trouble with 0.2mm at 400mm/s.
What settings are you using?
Which are the software used?
WHich program do you use for control? I have small plotter to, but I dont know how to generate code or make beautiful pictures from photos like yours.
interesting and cool project, you made it without cnc shield. Great work
You are master keep going
Looks like a fun project!
Just curious why you chose to go with an H-bot instead of a CoreXY, which doesn't suffer from the racking forces like you had to deal with?
I like having there only one belt and h-bot is just so minimalistic
WINCYJ takich projektów!
Niedługo może nawet po Polsku :)
@@nikodembartnik Ja akurat problemu z językiem nie mam, a Ty masz dzięki temu większe zasięgi :)
Can you direct me to the right source to understand this: 1) how to convert a paper drawing to digital xy coorinates. 2) how to convert those coordinates to motor rotations so the router tip follows the drawing
Beautiful .....
Could the drive mechanism be scaled to support a plasma cutter? Really cool btw!
Unfortunately, 3D printed parts and a plasma cutter is not the best combination. Also, the whole construction is just too weak for such a use case. But IndyMill can be easily adapted to plasma cutting and once I find a new space I may even build it :)
"Sometimes even new things to learn".... haha
how do you program it to make such complicated patterns? do you upload an image or something?
It's all explained in the video
Nice
Masz może swój serwer discord?
Hanzhen harmonic drive gear , industrial robot arm gear reducer
9:40 they do bend because the design is flawed. A simple rib on top would fix it. You "fixed" the flawed design by using a material with a higher bending stiffness. It's the same when building a bridge by laying out a thin board of wood without a beam underneath and expecting it to last.
Very nice, have you thought of an A4 sized version? Maybe more accessible. Cheers
what settings did you use for the PCB cut? feeds/speeds/spindle rpm
What book are you looking in there?
You can also put a 5W laser on and make a laser engraver/cutter. Nice project!
There are already so many laser cutters/engravers out there but how many gas-based wood-burning plotters have you seen? :)
Also, lasers are terrifying
It looks like you upgraded the spindle on the indyMill.
it's still the same spindle
Hallo i have a project and i can't upload the arduino mega you can help. Thanks
cool
hey great video please reply i wanna make 3d printer using rpi Pico and tmc2209
Which software did you use for creating gcode for drawings?
It's JScut, you can use it in the browser and is quite simple, great for stuff like this
What's your field of study at the University?
Could you try to add a drag-knife too it?
Not really rigid enough. However, there are numerous other open-source designs that can do it. Basically you want to look for a router design to base your machine on. Also you will need a Z-axis with some sort of spring loading.
🤔
GREAT! Thank you Nikodem! Do you sleep at night?
Thanks! Sure I do :)
Can you please supply me the circuit diagram in *. Jpg format please
Thank you from INDIA🙏
If you would use CoreXY instead hbot you would have no Problems anymore with moments or forces
Sure but I really like H-bot's simplicity and having here only one belt :)
@@nikodembartnik it is really Not Hard, just cut the Belt into two peaces. There is some where a Page i think it Name was CoreXY. Com which explain it very nice. I really recomment it, give it a try
14:19 I can't see
LOL
