Examining Why Greta Van Fleet Gets So Much Hate | Indiecast

  • Steve and Ian dive head first into a discussion of 'The Battle At Garden's Gate,' the latest from Greta Van Fleet. In many ways, the Michigan band is an extension of the bands that popularized hard rock over the last fifty years. Despite being one of the most critically reviled young bands of today, the group holds an important role in the lineage of bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Guns N' Roses, and more, who brought hard rock to the masses and had some of the best selling albums of all time. At the end of the day, Greta Van Fleet remains a band so preposterous in the year 2021 that they are endlessly endearing and fun to engage with.

Rock reviewers are the biggest snobs. I don’t think we can afford to be snobs. We need more rock, no matter how they build their career. For their age, they are extremely talented and have a very promising future. Also, they are borrowing from their idols just as their idols did from THEIR idols. Led Zeppelin was accused of plagiarizing many bands and blues greats. Rush was accused of stealing their sound from Zeppelin. The snobbery needs to end and we just need to let the rock resurgence to take hold. They are a good band. Period.

Guys it’s like listening to Yes, Rush, Zepplin, Moody Blues all rolled into one with their own flair. It’s fresh. It’s not about singing about dying, or abuse, or how life sucks, which is awesome in this day and age. Josh has and incredible voice, Jake is an amazing guitar player, Sam makes me wish I could play piano like and of course Danny just creates a great rhythm for the songs. What do want them to do, play Hip Hop or bubblegum pop. And the best part is they look to be having so much fun playing together. We need more rock bands.😊

What the hell is so wrong with a group of kids just making music that they love? It’s not their fault that the music that they love isn’t acceptable in this industry where music is taken so seriously. While I still love the band I understand why people criticize them. However, I don’t understand why people need to be so militant towards them. It’s just music, you can choose not to listen to it……

Someone (less judgemental) must like them because all of their shows are sold out and their albums hit #1 on the rock charts every time. Oh yeah, and then there's that Grammy. Not too bad for a band of brothers from little Frankenmuth (NOT Detroit) Michigan who have only been doing this for about 3 years. I look forward to seeing how they grow and like LZ, who was lambasted at every turn for the first few albums, I think time and a bit of patina will play things out in their favor.

Zeppelin was hated and reviled by the magazines and critics because they were taking all these classic blues tunes and, in many eyes, “perverting” them. In the time of Clapton, the watershed of blues artists before him and the British folk revival… there was the loud and sexual Led Zeppelin. Critics and purists found themselves asking “Why do these clowns get a seat at the table?”
The difference between Zeppelin and GVF is the pushing of boundaries.
Zeppelin was reimagining (some would say stealing, but that another conversation) blues classics that were getting tired. They were innovative, inventive, bold and created something truly unique. (Even if they didn’t do the best job of giving credit)
Speaking of giving credit… GVF deserve all the credit for doubling down on doing what they love. They’re young, undeniably talented and should focus on having the time of their lives. BUT. When it comes to their sound? Their look? Lyrics, etc.
It’s derivative. It doesn’t risk much of anything because we hear all of the influences so clearly. The only risk being taken is playing rock music in a post-rock world.
I’d love to see them continue to grow, and move in a more original direction. Maybe alienate some of the Zeppelin fans and challenge the boundaries of rock music.
That’s the Greta Van Fleet I’m looking forward to.

Pretty much the spirit of every critical pile on of groups (like what happened to LZ initially) until their popularity allows the generation that loved them to grow up to control the press and then they are (sadly) sanctified. These guys have as much or more talent than all the bands they are compared to. Their music is still immature (they were teens for most of the writing of it) and it's still better than most of the bands of the eras they clearly draw from (except for the greats). That people hyperfocus on their Zep inspired tunes shows how little they've listen to GVF. As usual, big opinions tend to flow from ignorance. And these rock critic snobs intellectual pretenders - just like the music critics of every era that are so out of touch.

  • @music4meh

My take on why some people might hate it: a lot of music critics, and audiences in general, judge music by their cultural impact. They want new artists to create something new, not do an exact thing that has been done for about 60 years. Some people want new art to determine the future of the culture and medium, influence what other artists will create and be inspired by, and determining what audiences are looking for and expecting from the media. They want new art to influence and inspire more new art, have a cultural impact in inventing something that has not been done before. In a way, Greta van Fleet would be an example of why ''rock is dead''; none of the mainstream rock music is, relatively (compared to other genres), innovative. All artists are creative, but not all are innovative, not all are determining and influencing the future of the culture, what other artists are creating, what audiences like.
Personally, I like Greta a lot. But I can see why some people might be frustrated when you want or need new artists to do something new, and have an immense impact. ''Rock is dead'' may not mean ''nobody plays rock anymore'' or ''nobody listens to rock anymore''. Perhaps it means ''nothing new is happening in mainstream rock'', which I, personally, don't entirely agree with either.

It's pretty hard to innovate these days when everything has been done. Music is like fashion, it goes in circles. The only thing that could make a whole new genre (not subgenre) is the invention of a totally new and interesting instrument. Bands like Greta Van Fleet are only a natural evolution, yet still within that circle. I like them for who they are, I like their sound. And I don't give two shits about comparing them to anything else.

This is exactly why I hate them. It's like how hollywood just keeps making reboots and remakes of already good movies. Are the remakes better? Fuck no. They are shadows of the original and they are missing the cultural impact they made when the OG came out. I don't applaud kids that used trace paper but made spider-man green instead and I don't applaud movie reboots, Chaoseum or gretta van fleet. I'm not mad you enjoy them and it is good to see even though you like them you understand why they get the hate they do.

art and media need to be pushed forward and expanded upon. Let's hope Greta's next album is aware of that and does that! I agree, after grunge, there hasn't been any interesting developments in rock, but I do think that there have been a lot of noteworthy albums, from Alice in Chains (after Layne died) to all the things Robert Plant did, to Rammstein. But no one has been pushing hard rock to its limits in order to make it rise like a phoenix, or I haven't seen it yet. There is no denying that this band has talent, that they are evolving with each album, and that they really just go out there, promoting their love for people, peace' love, and music. They play as they want to and dress as they want to and I really don't get how people can hate them for it. There's not one evil thought between the four of them.

  • @claradahlberg-garde8993

There's so much focus on how music 'needs to evolve' and how it's not allowed to play like they did in the old days, 'cause "that's a ripoff".
Everyone in the music industry needs to come up with something new, and God help them, if they build with the bricks that the ancestors left behind!
I mean, look at Taylor Swift; don't tell me she has invented anything new music-wise, but that doesn't mean she makes boring and/or bad music!
The level of innovation that happened in the 20tht century music-wise is crazy, and it's simply not fair to demand the same level of innovation from today's artists - that goes for all genres. At some point, all the tools have been used before and all the sounds have been heard before and it has been getting exponentially more and more difficult to come up with something new and at the same time have it sound good.
Look at the culinary world: because of this demand for innovative food and "going where no one has gone before", there are restaurants that make food out of soil and ants! Personally, I'd much rather enjoy a good old-fashioned but perfected Sunday roast dinner

New Album is ok. GRETA V.F. got inspired from ZEPPELIN and ZEPPELIN stole all the Chicago African A. Blues, jazz etc.

So why have bands such as Metallica, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, and the White Stripes have all insulted Greta Van Fleet as a complete rip-off? Must be there just jealous huh?

They just seem ridiculous- not that I've really listened to them. Maybe that's their thing. I hate most "new" music but that's because I compare it too much to the bands of the past that I grew up on.

This-I just don’t get. If you haven’t listened to them , how can you say they are ridiculous? I’m old. I bought the very first Led Zeppelin album. I was there for the Stones.
Greta Van Fleet are 4 young talented guys; just doing what they like to hear

GVF is possibly the worst thing that has happened to music in the last 100 years.
I don’t know what they are, and neither do they.

They just look absolutely ridiculous, and its not even their own original look. Totally derivative. Can't get past that.

Some people can tell when they are getting Splenda instead of sugar, that's all. Some people care more than others. To those people this band will always be some ultra poseur replica classic rock band made up of children that can play their instruments and sing some songs but couldn't tell you a thing about real life or art or what it feels like to really do something different.

@@catchinglooks he said they lack originality, not that they're completely void of it. for instance let's say I believe GVF would score 2/1000 on a originality scale and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard score 100/1000. That means I'd find KGATLW to be a whole 50x more original.
That doesn't mean I find KGATLW that much more enjoyable, but they surely are QUITE a bit more fun to listen to than these 70s throwhacks.

@@mackereltacos2850 thank you for that arbitrary scale. and see, i listen to a ton of indie bands as well i don't find king gizzard as fun to listen to. i like big, riff driven '70s-style rock, and greta delivers that for me.

Its also funny that the majority of their audience is teenage girls. Since when have teenage girls been fans of blues rock? Their fandom is artificial.
