No other song can make one's heart both sing, soar, and shatter all at once. I grew up listening to Gordon Lightfoot because my parents loved his music, this is my favorite song of his. I heard this song yesterday at the local grocery store on the speakers, I almost lost it right there in produce. Such a gorgeous song.

      Same.
      And well said. 💜
And, I confess, I have lost it a time or 2 in the produce section. 😁
I guess they probably think I'm so touched by their zucchini that it moves me to tears 😛
      (hehe, oh well)
      Such a beautiful song.
I have always loved it, also since I was little. Our parents must have been listening to similar music.
I still have to say, there has never been a better era for music than the late 60's early 70's ("peace hippy" era) not before or since.
(Except for maybe like Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, and the like)
I think more music has come from that era than any other that has the power to reach in and touch the soul the way so much music has from that time. Even all the best music since then is usually inspired or influenced by music and artists from that era.
Leave it to pain and tragedy (like the Vietnam War) to bring out the most beautiful art.

I'm late 50's, and this song was on the radio in the USA for most of my early childhood, whenever I would ride in the car with my parents. One thing this song shows, which is rare today, is the state of mind of a caring man who is essentially a gentleman dealing with his feelings of lost love in a constructive, healing way. The one he loves is never degraded or blamed, and there is no anger. It is as graceful as it is hauntingly beautiful. In fact, if there were any real feelings left in the heart of his lover, hearing this would surely get her to fall in love all over again and, if not, then the love wasn't meant to be, and therefore this musical love poem becomes an emotional release and cleansing for the one still broken. When the words and musical emotions are taken together, they are literally a blueprint for how to handle the loss of love in a dignified and meaningful way, always leaving hope for your own romantic future in the gracefulness of the delivery of the message, which is ultimately respectful of human emotion and therefore uplifting, despite a melancholy mood. It was good for me to hear this as a child, and still helps me even now, encouraging me to go on searching for the real thing despite never having found it. Gordon's song is enough to keep me believing, and where there is hope, there is life. Thank you, Mr. Lightfoot, for a true lifetime gift.

The lyric where he says “I’m just tryin’ to understand the feeling that you LEFT” is actually “I’m just tryin’ to understand the feeling that you lack”. His daughter later made him change the lyric while performing it live. This song was recorded in California somewhere between September and December of 1969. It was originally released on the album “Sit Down Young Stranger”, later to be re-titled “If You Could Read My Mind” released April of 1970. It’s very personal, and it’s sad, but in some cases relationships can’t be repaired, especially when both parties are not on the same page, and one cares more than the other. In many cases pride can get in the way, and destroy relationships. It’s unfortunately true, and a hard pill 💊 to swallow....
I’m with a woman 👩🏼 that I love that means the world 🌎 to me now, and it took so many years to find her.... She’s truly my soulmate. There isn’t anything that I wouldn’t sacrifice to help make her life better because she loves me for “me”.... Flaws and all.

I loved her so very very much and she left me with our dog that knows me as daddy. I cry all the time. I’m not abusing or on drugs and I worked very hard to give her what I had even though she made very little. I think about her and puppy all the time and want to die cause my life ended. I’m trying very hard to continue and slowly exceeding almost a year. Guess I know cause this song belongs to my LEE. Not me.

      @joereich686 4 роки тому +20

Jim Gross - Jim, I have been to hell and back in past relationships. It took me finally giving up on looking for “the one”, in order to find my soulmate. I started talking to my lady December of 2016, and I had realized that I had lost “me”, and “my sense of humor”. I know it’s harder than some guys may think, because some can just be clearly insensitive to there woman’s feelings, and they care more about themselves than anything else. take things for granted. I treated women exactly how I expected to be treated myself. I was burned badly in past relationships, and I fully understand what it feels like to lose EVERYTHING, and stand there with my jaw dropped and in shock over what I had gone through. There is hope for a much better life with a woman that would fully appreciate and be on the same page as you. Yes, I had lost my dog-child, too, but I did end up with her, when my ex-wife decided to go out with a guy who dislikes dogs. You need to see yourself as being worthy of a much better life with a woman who will love you for yourself. You deserve that. You deserve to be happy, in a great relationship. DON’T GIVE UP HOPE.... Something wonderful may be just around the corner for you, too.... Sooner than you think.
God Bless you Jim.... May HE put the best woman you could ever wish to have in your life now.... 🙂

Just heard the sad news of this icon’s passing today. 🥲 This has been one of my favorite songs for 50 years 😍 I was an international student, who stayed in an almost empty college dormitory during Christmas break my freshman year. It was eerily quiet and lonely. Thankfully, some friends were kind enough to leave their favorite records with me. Among them was a Gordon Lightfoot LP. I almost wore it out playing this song over and over again. It helped get me through not just the crushing isolation of the deserted dormitory, but many challenging times since. Thank you, Gordon. RIP, see you down the road. 🙏🏼

Whilst the following is, IMO, an accurate assessment of the lyric’s meaning, I cannot claim them as my own thoughts. It seemed important enough to share……
"If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark, or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet, you know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see."
This verse describes what is going on in the man’s mind, feeling trapped and invisible, not sure how to mend the relationship or make his feelings known. The figurative chains on his feet keep him from both expressing his feelings and from leaving … he feels powerless. He wishes she could read his mind -- hence the song title -- because that would be the only way for her to really see how he feels.
    The second verse,
"If I could read your mind, love, what a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel, the kind the drugstores sell
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me, but heroes often fail
And you won't read that book again because the ending's just too hard to take."
describes the woman's mind, like a romance novel or a fairy tale - dreaming of the knight in shining armor she hopes for her love to be. He realizes that she wanted for him to be the hero, the knight in shining armor … but he failed. And now she won’t come back to him because it is too painful and she already knows how it will turn out.
"I'd walk away like a movie star who gets burned in a three way script,
    Enter number two
A movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now, love, let's be real
I never thought I could act this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong but the feeling's gone
And I just can't get it back."
Here, he describes the end of the paperback novel and what was simultaneously occurring in his mind. His pride (as the movie star) makes him want to walk away rather than compromise or communicate. He thinks that there's some other woman out there who will bring out all the good things in him, and he won't have to work on the relationship or deal with arguments. In "escaping" from the relationship and the chains upon his feet, he is expecting to find the perfect relationship to take its place, but realizes this is unrealistic and can’t figure out why he thinks this way.
    The last verse,
"If you could read my mind, love, what a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie, 'bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong with chains upon my feet
    But stories always end
And if you read between the lines, you'll know that I'm just trying to understand
    The feelings that you lack
I never thought I could feel this way and I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong but the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back."
Relationships, like stories, come to an end. He uses an interesting tactic to show the abrupt end - unlike the first verse where he finishes the thought, he interrupts the verse to say “but stories always end.” He can’t understand how she doesn’t care anymore, in the powerful line, " And if you read between the lines, you'll know that I'm just trying to understand the feelings that you lack."
This is oh so representative of the lack of clear communication in so many relationships. We sit there, feeling so many things that we just can't express. And we wish that the other person could just read our mind and understand us. But our pride gets in the way. And we are silent. Then those feelings gradually fade and we can't understand where they went or how our relationship went wrong.

Saw him at least ten times in concert and have all his albums on vinyl. He is a classic story teller. Gordon wrote this song while his first marriage was falling apart. You can feel his pain in the lyrics. My wife is not the fan that I am but as this song came on once I explained the back story behind the lyrics. She then teared up while listening to it. I think everyone who has gone through a painful breakup can relate to it.

I was only six years old, at the time, and its charm still hasn't diminished. I consider it a "perfect" song, where not one note is unappreciated, and I don't tire of multiple listens. Years later, I debated on whether I should spend $15 on "Gord's Gold," just to get this one song. It was one of the most satisfying purchases of music, for me. Only one song (out of 22) didn't thrill me, but all the rest were great!

Changes the meaning of the song 💯%.

it absolutely is!!! Before my time but alas people of my generation must go back in time if we want to listen to music that came straight from a heart and soul...there is no genuine feeling in the so~called music out today...it's quite disgusting and shameful....we are meant to be progressing, instead humanity as a whole in the area of music is definitely regressing! We learned this song in year 6 in school in the 70s. At the time I loved the melody and Gordon's voice but I never really took in the words. Here I am, 45 years later, happily divorced but in love with someone who loves me but who won't do anything about it. This song sums us up. Feeling melancholy but ok.

I first heard this song at the end of the movie "Wonderland." Then I listened to it more and read the lyrics.
As a fan of many songs and more modern bands, I have to admit that Gordon Lightfoot has created a sad, positive, beautiful masterpiece! This song literally could be the theme song for my loved ones. The ones I lost, pushed away, and left me. More than any other, this resonates with me.

Hey Darko7743. So u saw Wonderland? I lived those years when Johnny "Wad" Holmes was out here doing his thing. I remember that part of the movie. Perfect song for that ending, wasn't it? Your comment was on point. I just left this chick that just wasn't acting 🎬 right. Enough was enough. I sent her daughter $50, I let the girl know why I was bouncing, then sent her 2 songs. This one and "Trying to Get That Feeling Again" by Barry Manilow. She texted me, "Why?" Then I blocked her. Anyway, you seem like a young dude with a very good ear for music. Makes me feel bad for those who can hear the beauty and meanings in the music. Take care brother, and never stop listening.
