Since Jello mentioned the whole 'if you like Pokemon, don't make a fan-game make your own game' thing, I feel the need to mention Cassette Beasts, which is a Pokemon-style rpg (catch monsters, party of six, type chart with advantages and weaknesses) that has an entire unique type chart, type interactions, a great soundtrack, and is just a bundle of fun to play.
I take issue to this since more often than not fangames/hacks/mods are really good entry level projects for people trying to get into the game development industry or looking for a new hobby to spend their time with. I understand the point from a consumer perspective as well... ... but also, many consumers would legit just ignore the other monster catching genre games aside from pokemon and digimon.
@@Signedcentaur THIS. I understand the legal rough edges, but at that same time, they’re good projects for people to improve their skills laying out RPG worlds and perfecting challenge. And then, I can say from experience that there’s just something… Off with the rest of the genre. I love Pokémon, and there’s this charm with SPECIFICALLY the GBA and DS era that’s hard to recreate with both new Pokémon games and other monster catchers. I bought TemTem, Nexomon, and a few others but they don’t really capture that magic. The strength behind Pokémon, as it has been since Gen II, is familiarity. Losing that familiarity sucks, so trying to play a new game with a new type system, new monsters and similar mechanics just feels wrong. However, there is ONE project that I’ve actually found interest in. It’s not out yet, but Kindred Fates, which is currently in development, has kind of everything that I think fixes the issue. It doesn’t use a similar battle system, it has permadeath for your team members if you’re not careful, it seems to be open world, etc. I think for fans to be able to make their own Pokémon-based RPG that captures that magic, you kinda HAVE to take it in a vastly different direction, or it’ll come across to the average consumer as a knockoff rather than a new game franchise.
@@Signedcentauryeah yokai watch coming to America is a really good example on how even popular Pokémon like games can have major issues finding a audience without people getting very pissed off even when the game is very different from Pokémon people will still not even recognize it as anything but a Pokémon clone
To add my 2 cents: if you want to make a pokemon fan game, make a *Pokemon* fan game If you want to make fakemon just make your own ip and commit to it. I'd accept unique regional variants/"delta" mons, but if you are trying out the pokemon formula, just use pokemon, fakemon with pokemon typings just feels like a half measure

This game sure was a game when I played it. Woof. Look, making a game of any kind takes a lot of time and effort. So props to them for being able to do that. But... hoooooo-boy. Some game designs sure were made. Like the nuclear being 2x to everything but steel and 2x weak to everything (but itself? can't recall). Hint, it's the ice type problem all over again but even worse. They sure did make an area that's got no PC or electricity that's mandatory with a bug dungeon in it. Fly not till the end of the game, and surf till near end game. The route and town design is rather nice though.
Actually it probably wasn't a game when you last played it they took it down same week if I recall. Also go play 1 of the 50 pokemons if you want to play AAA pokemon so bad lol
The problem with the town design in this game is that the Pokemon Centre is usually ten million miles from the town entrance, which is bad if you enter the town in a panic! They're pretty towns but they really should swap the Pokecentre with another building so it's right next to the main entrance.
This is the only fangame i ever played, and probably the first one I actually heard about. I was really into it at the time, I think I was still in high school? I was drawing so much fanart of the female and nonbinary protagonist and I really loved some of the pokemon. (I redesigned all the protagonists in my sketchbook lol.)

This game is pretty okay…on the bell curve of Pokémon fan games. There’s a lot of extremely scuffed game design in this game, and some very hostile trainer stuff. Who adds a contrary overheat mon as a speed check?
I played Uranium it’s definitely is well design but it does suffer from feeling dated as hell with how slow exp gain is I just feels if the people still updating the game with mystery gifts every couple weeks can keep adding new mystery gift versions of Pokémon They could atleast add an Exp all option Also yeah the game does kinda suffer from locking all the cool designs to mid-late game
Was looking through the comments for someone saying exactly this lol Uranium's main problems are too-slow XP gain, not enough money, trainers having too many Pokemon and/or competitive cheese strats on random trainers, and putting a lot of the fun new Pokemon way at the end of the game. A lot of those are complaints about certain mainline Pokemon games, but also if there's something which is usually acknowledged as a problem in the mainline games, you probably shouldn't copy it in your fangame!

I remember my first (and only) time playing Pokemon Uranium. I thought the game looks nice, if you ignore the Pokemon designs. Don't get me wrong, there are good ones, but the majority look terrible. The starters confused me, since I actually lost the first fight. I picked the grass starter, which is defensively orientated and got promptly paralyzed by the enemies 'Static' ability. What followed was a long slog of me being constantly fully paralyzed until the enemy eventually beat me. While I like the idea of giving your starters different abilities than the standard ones, I think that it's still important to balance them properly. And that's when I realized something... The fire starter is Fire/Ground (4x weak to Water), the grass starter is Grass/Steel (4x weak to Fire) but the water starter is Water/Electric (only weak to grass and ground, the latter he is strong against himself). This means, with the aforementioned 'Static' Ability and the typing, the Water Starter is disproportionally better than the other two. Which is just terrible design. Similarly questionable design is the 'questionnaire' to decide what your starter is... it feels like they only heard that people like that feature from the Mystery Dungeon Series and just wanted to implement it themselves. And then threw out everything about this feature by colour-coding the answers. Why? Anyway, I chalked that down as weird design decisions and moved on... and then I was hit by more battles and something weird triggered some core memories. The sounds and the attack animations, to be precise. They felt... familiar. And then it hit me where I saw/heard them before. Most attacks used stock RPG-Maker Sound Effects and/or Animations. And that's where I decided to throw this game out the window. It shouldn't happen that, after years of development of your Fan-Game, you still use stock Sounds and Animations from your base engine. At least it shouldn't if you really cared for the quality of your product. That was around the release of the game, back when there was a huge fuss about the C&D, because most people on the internet do not know what 'Intellectual Properties' are (which is why it's always better to not make a 'fan-game' but rather something original 'game-esque'). So it surprised me to see that... the stock Animations and Sound Effects are still in the game... and that 'Charm' still does not work properly. And since the devs have, apparently, moved on to a different Pokemon Fan-Game, these things will not get fixed. Hopefully their next Game rises over 'It's a Pokemon Fan-Game that isn't complete trash' and is, at the very least more than simply a decent game.
The grass starter is there as a trap to ruin the built-in Nuzlocke mode See, because the first gym is a Normal/Yawn-type gym, you might think "I need the grass/steel starter to resist Scratches, because the only other tools that you can use to cheese the first gym are Mankey and Barewl and you aren't guaranteed to catch those because it's Nuzlocke So you take the Grass starter, because he resists Normal, but he's also the only starter who doesn't begin with a STAB move, so you get creamed in the first battle with Theo Then the only Pokemon you own is dead because it's Nuzlocke, and you can't catch another because you don't have any Pokemon to battle with, so the game crashes when you try to enter a battle
Ahhh, yeah, a lot of rock types end up disappointing in the final stages, that's true. Sounds like you called out the Rolycoly line and I am 100% with you there, the final form makes me so mad when it coulda been a train or a motorcycle or something. I played this years ago and seeing it again actually kinda makes me want to revisit it. I don't think I ever finished it actually, just made it pretty far. It's pretty solid as far as romhacks go. You guys ever play one of the fusion games? There's a few different ones by different people. They're interesting, but tend to be pretty off the wall. Personally I like Nuzlockes a lot. I can see why people wouldn't want to do them, but it creates interesting runs and provides extra challenge if that's what you're looking for.
Having seen a few different playthroughs of this game, including when it first came out, it starts going downhill pretty fast near the halfway point. Balancing being an issue is noticeable at the start but later becomes a real problem. From what I recall, the fanmade pokemon or "fakemon" give out way less exp compared to the official pokemon since those use the same values pulled from the official games. Combine that with the level curve you end grinding A LOT because of it.
Why would you make thee starters only 2 stage. That entirely defeats the idea of them growing with you if there's random other pokemon with 3 stages but not the starter
AH so this is where Jolteon came from. It all comes full circle. Gnawbone was part of the nice bone in Jolteon's soul, the rest being Espeon and Umbreon's stellar parenting.

That really is what makes fangames not feel right for me huh They almost always try to be more 'mature' and whether they succeed or just end up feeling like the Shadow the Hedgehog of pokemon(The game, not the character), it still ends up sacrificing the vibe of pokemon that I personally like.

Dark Patamon already exists. It's called Tsukaimon. Most of the OG partner Digimon except for Biomon, Tentomon, and Gomamon, have a "dark" version of their rookie form, and the ones that don't have a dark champion or ultimate. Which, tl;dr, makes Tonemy even more basic and uncreative.
I hate klefki because I hate all *man-made* object pokemon. That has always been my stance. It doesn't feel like an animal, rather like something meant to be used by people as a tool. It highlights the tonal dissonance between the mechanics and themes of the pokemon franchise. I've always hated that part of pokemon, and it's why I'm not a fan of shiny hunting, "optimized" nuzlocks, or competitive play. Also I love Tancoon, he's a cool little guy, almost a cross between Poocheana and Zigzagoon
i will subject everyone to my opinion of Pokémon uranium. it is a bad Pokémon game, when i played it i got probably like half-way/ two thirds of the way through it and i noticed that the levels jump pretty hard in some places and i do in fact have a job and other hobbies so i did a short search for an infinite rare candy cheat because who WANTS to spend 1 hour grinding up a full team between milestones... turns out, catching a full team of 6 and trying to actually use all of them was the wrong way to play, i ended up on the discord and the reply i got was "what! you actually use more than just your starter? man your gonna hate X boss thats like level 70 out of nowhere, also cheating is wrong just grind for a few hours" at that point i was over required grinding, this community so thoroughly forgot the source material that they were amazed that i wanted "to catch them all", and hadn't assumed the strategy that makes the other games boring was not my preferred way to play (IE: over leveling one Pokémon and sweeping every trainer with the EXACT SAME STRATEGY) TLDR: pokemon uranium is grind one pokemon through the game, ignore our cool fakemon 0/10
I feel like that’s less “this game was designed with bad play in mind” and more “this game has some numbers problems and you encountered some terrible fans” but it’s weird they evidently never play tested it Also compared to some other Pokémon fan games…
@@purpleisdebeste well that's accurate, communities form around their thing, yeah the game has numbers issues but because of it, the only people who stay in the community are the ones who don't think it is a problem. besides whatever the devs intent the result is what speaks to the player, and those people on the discord are right, the way to beat this game IS solo grinding in my mind Pokémon uranium stands as an example of why playtesting is vital, and rebalancing is as well. if the devs had dropped the levels or adjusted things early on then the community would have a different mood (ish) but now all their fans are agreed on the intended strat and if they change it they won't be happy

Pokemon Solar light and Lunar dark will always be my favorite. I like its soft art style and it's tone is much more in line with Canon pokemon.

The sounds and the attack animations, to be precise. They felt... familiar. And then it hit me where I saw/heard them before. Most attacks used stock RPG-Maker Sound Effects and/or Animations.
And that's where I decided to throw this game out the window. It shouldn't happen that, after years of development of your Fan-Game, you still use stock Sounds and Animations from your base engine. At least it shouldn't if you really cared for the quality of your product.
That was around the release of the game, back when there was a huge fuss about the C&D, because most people on the internet do not know what 'Intellectual Properties' are (which is why it's always better to not make a 'fan-game' but rather something original 'game-esque').
So it surprised me to see that... the stock Animations and Sound Effects are still in the game... and that 'Charm' still does not work properly. And since the devs have, apparently, moved on to a different Pokemon Fan-Game, these things will not get fixed.
Hopefully their next Game rises over 'It's a Pokemon Fan-Game that isn't complete trash' and is, at the very least more than simply a decent game.
The grass starter is there as a trap to ruin the built-in Nuzlocke mode
See, because the first gym is a Normal/Yawn-type gym, you might think "I need the grass/steel starter to resist Scratches, because the only other tools that you can use to cheese the first gym are Mankey and Barewl and you aren't guaranteed to catch those because it's Nuzlocke
So you take the Grass starter, because he resists Normal, but he's also the only starter who doesn't begin with a STAB move, so you get creamed in the first battle with Theo
Then the only Pokemon you own is dead because it's Nuzlocke, and you can't catch another because you don't have any Pokemon to battle with, so the game crashes when you try to enter a battle
Ahhh, yeah, a lot of rock types end up disappointing in the final stages, that's true. Sounds like you called out the Rolycoly line and I am 100% with you there, the final form makes me so mad when it coulda been a train or a motorcycle or something.
I played this years ago and seeing it again actually kinda makes me want to revisit it. I don't think I ever finished it actually, just made it pretty far. It's pretty solid as far as romhacks go. You guys ever play one of the fusion games? There's a few different ones by different people. They're interesting, but tend to be pretty off the wall.
Personally I like Nuzlockes a lot. I can see why people wouldn't want to do them, but it creates interesting runs and provides extra challenge if that's what you're looking for.
Since this was streamed in 2020 does anyone know if we get more of this or is it dead and this all we get of gnawbone?

Having seen a few different playthroughs of this game, including when it first came out, it starts going downhill pretty fast near the halfway point.
Balancing being an issue is noticeable at the start but later becomes a real problem. From what I recall, the fanmade pokemon or "fakemon" give out way less exp compared to the official pokemon since those use the same values pulled from the official games. Combine that with the level curve you end grinding A LOT because of it.

Why would you make thee starters only 2 stage. That entirely defeats the idea of them growing with you if there's random other pokemon with 3 stages but not the starter
Also means that the starter Pokemon have *extremely* gimped stat distributions
AH so this is where Jolteon came from. It all comes full circle. Gnawbone was part of the nice bone in Jolteon's soul, the rest being Espeon and Umbreon's stellar parenting.
That or Jolteon is Gnawbone's reincarnation from this hellscape.

They almost always try to be more 'mature' and whether they succeed or just end up feeling like the Shadow the Hedgehog of pokemon(The game, not the character), it still ends up sacrificing the vibe of pokemon that I personally like.
I agree, fan games always try to be way too edgy and it just comes across as a 12 yo thinking they're way cooler than they actually are

Dark Patamon already exists. It's called Tsukaimon. Most of the OG partner Digimon except for Biomon, Tentomon, and Gomamon, have a "dark" version of their rookie form, and the ones that don't have a dark champion or ultimate. Which, tl;dr, makes Tonemy even more basic and uncreative.

I hate klefki because I hate all *man-made* object pokemon. That has always been my stance. It doesn't feel like an animal, rather like something meant to be used by people as a tool. It highlights the tonal dissonance between the mechanics and themes of the pokemon franchise.
I've always hated that part of pokemon, and it's why I'm not a fan of shiny hunting, "optimized" nuzlocks, or competitive play.
Also I love Tancoon, he's a cool little guy, almost a cross between Poocheana and Zigzagoon
i will subject everyone to my opinion of Pokémon uranium. it is a bad Pokémon game, when i played it i got probably like half-way/ two thirds of the way through it and i noticed that the levels jump pretty hard in some places and i do in fact have a job and other hobbies so i did a short search for an infinite rare candy cheat because who WANTS to spend 1 hour grinding up a full team between milestones... turns out, catching a full team of 6 and trying to actually use all of them was the wrong way to play, i ended up on the discord and the reply i got was "what! you actually use more than just your starter? man your gonna hate X boss thats like level 70 out of nowhere, also cheating is wrong just grind for a few hours"
at that point i was over required grinding, this community so thoroughly forgot the source material that they were amazed that i wanted "to catch them all", and hadn't assumed the strategy that makes the other games boring was not my preferred way to play (IE: over leveling one Pokémon and sweeping every trainer with the EXACT SAME STRATEGY)
TLDR: pokemon uranium is grind one pokemon through the game, ignore our cool fakemon 0/10
I feel like that’s less “this game was designed with bad play in mind” and more “this game has some numbers problems and you encountered some terrible fans” but it’s weird they evidently never play tested it

@@purpleisdebeste well that's accurate, communities form around their thing, yeah the game has numbers issues but because of it, the only people who stay in the community are the ones who don't think it is a problem.
besides whatever the devs intent the result is what speaks to the player, and those people on the discord are right, the way to beat this game IS solo grinding in my mind Pokémon uranium stands as an example of why playtesting is vital, and rebalancing is as well. if the devs had dropped the levels or adjusted things early on then the community would have a different mood (ish) but now all their fans are agreed on the intended strat and if they change it they won't be happy
