Till this day, I still think of this promo whenever I think of NBC.
Who is the babe at 1:36 singing and holding up her finger ☝🏾 as everybody is singing "NBC!"?
@@JasonDelarosa2000Jackee Harry from 227
@@jwilliams7554 The same Jackee Harry that later went on to _Sister, Sister_ on The WB?
The only time a single broadcast network won EVERY week in the ratings for an entire season. An ENTIRE season.
That's crazy. Cosby and Golden Girls dominated thier nights with no question. No network could do that now.
@@nlee4566 Well, they can. Just that not with the same number as Cosby and The Golden Girls use to have (higher than 20 points). Today, the highest rated show has, at least, 1 point.
@@MegaJuanTrinidad Yeah it's much more fragmented now than it was even in 1989.
I know every Saturday night I was watching facts of life, 227, golden girls, amen, and hunter.
Daytime and primetime.
My early childhood spent watching NBC prime time. Love it!
It's such a shame that some of them is no longer here, Like,
1. Michael Landon.
2. Johnny Carson.
3. Bob Hope.
4. Ed McMahon.
5. Dick Clark.
6. Rue McClanahan.
7. Estelle Getty.
8. Bea Arthur.
9. Betty White.
10. Larry Drake.
11. Sherman Hemsley.
12. Hugh Downs.
13. Barbara Walters.
14. Peter Jennings.
15. Ed Bradley.
16. Mike Wallace.
17. Robert Stack.
1988-89 was a great season for NBC with the Summer Olympics starting it off but it was also one of major transition. By the Summer of 1989 NBC would cancel iconic 80’s shows Family Ties and Miami Vice, they would cancel almost their entire powerhouse daytime game show lineup including Wheel of Fortune, their Saturday morning lineup was beginning to gear more toward teens, and Major League Baseball’s Game of the Week would be on its final innings.
It also brought The Golden Girls spinoff Empty Nest, which starred “Soap” alums Richard Mulligan & Dinah Manoff, as well as Kristy McNichol (of “Family”).
Miami Vice was definitely canceled due to declining popularity/ratings, but in the case of Family Ties, I believe it was simply decided by Gary David Goldberg to retire the series after season 7. If he had wanted to continue the show, I'm confident that NBC would have renewed it in 1989.
Plus, HUNTER was back for a 5th season and not only was it in the Top 30 for the 3rd straight season, but it finally CRACKED the Nielsen Ratings Top 20 and it was the only season in which the late George Geiger Producer of Scarecrow and Mrs. King and a Former Writer for the Captain and Tennille Variety Show took over as Executive Producer of HUNTER after Roy Huggins (who saved the show from cancellation) stepped down as Executive Producer after 3 successful seasons
@@VaultMasterDBT Plus, it was the final season for Highway to Heaven and the Final Series for Michael Landon after a span of 30 years with NBC (Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven)
Their teen pivot didn't begin until _Saved by the Bell_ enrolled in 1989
I remember this promo. The song has always stuck in my head
just think 10 years earlier in 1978 NBC was in the absolute doldrums. 1979 even worse but man, once NBC got rolling in the early 80's they just kept on getting better and better. RIP Brandon Tartikoff & Fred Silverman.
But in the next few years span, we'd get the Bird in a bad way - NBC moving away from Saturday morning cartoons and daytime game shows as well as Michael Landon was a rotten fowl play.
The late 2000's and early 2010's was a disaster...
NBC should have brought this song back each year. I wish we could have seen the cast of Friends, Seinfeld, Fresh Prince of Belair, The Office, Park and Rec, 30 rock, Community, Jimmy Fallon, etc. do this song.
I know it’d have have great to see Kelsey as he transitioned from Cheers to Frasier.
But you know that each year they’d have to modify the lyrics to cater to the hit shows of that year. For example “only on NBC, Jerry is always there for you…” (a play on on both Seinfeld and Friends)
Law and Order and ER too!!!!
I was thinking the same thing. Especially to attract a new generation of viewers.
Nightside, Sunset Beach, In the House, News Radio, The Naked Truth, Just Shoot Me,
Mad About You, Caroline in the City, Suddenly Susan, Veronica's Closet,
Blossom, The John Larroquette Show, Sisters, ER, Quantum Leap, Law & Order,
Profiler, The Pretender, Night Court, Frasier, Will & Grace, Homicide: Life on the Street.
A Closer Look, Leeza, The Other Side, Access Hollywood et al - Come Home to the Best...
Only on NBC!
If I ever Build a Time Machine and Go Back in Time, I will bring back the Following TV Shows.
1. Mad Abou You.
2. ER.
3. Will & Grace.
4. Highway to Heaven.
5. Father Dowling Mysteries.
6. Night Court.
7. L.A Law.
Etc. Etc.
I would also bring back the following Old School PBS Shows Too.
1. Mister Roger's Neighborhood.
2. Captain Kangaroo.
3. Sesame Street. (Before it was screwed up).
4. Is-Land Treasure.
5. The Letter People.
6. Star Lore.
7. STORYLORDS.
8. Once Upon a Time. (I'm not talking about a former TV series of the same name).
9. Read It.
10. The Book Bird.
11. Cover to Cover.
Etc. Etc.
I would also Bring Back Old School Disney Channel Cartoons and Shows, Fox Kids Cartoons and Shoes, Cartoon Network, Etc. Etc.
NBC was once again #1 on Prime Time, but it dominated like ever before
The Cosby Show, A Different World, Cheers, Dear John, Night Court, 227, Amen, The Golden Girls, Empty Nest, Matlock, L.A. LAW, In the Heat of the Night, ALF, The Hogan Family, Unsolved Mysteries, NBC Sunday Night at the Movies and My Two Dads
Plus, it was the final season for Family Ties, Highway to Heaven, Miami Vice and Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears
Tom Brokaw was still KING of NBC Nightly News, Johnny Carson and David Letterman were still the KINGS of Late Night TV
and on Saturday Mornings, you still had Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks as well as the final year for Daytime Game Shows $ale of the Century, Super Password, Daytime Win, Lose or Draw and Daytime Wheel of Fortune
Classic Concentration was once again NBC's #1 Game Show
and last, but not least, you had our favorite Crime Drama Series HUNTER with Fred Dryer, Stepfanie Kramer and the late Charles Hallahan and it CRACKED the Nielsen Ratings Top 20 and was THE #1 Police Drama on Television and even got higher ratings than fellow NBC Police Drama In the Heat of the Night
God Bless Brandon Tartikoff and Thank You for making NBC #1 for the 4th year in a row and God Bless the Voice of NBC in the late Danny Dark also known as the voice of Superman in SuperFriends and Keebler Food Products
You forgot one I didn't see the cast of facts of life
Also the pilot of Seinfeld aired in July of 1989
R.I.P to.
1. Michael Landon.
2. Larry Drake.
3. Johnny Carson.
4. Sherman Hemsley.
5. Bob Hope.
6. Rue McClanahan.
7. Bea Arthur.
8. Estelle Getty.
9. Betty White.
10. Hugh Downs.
11. Barbara Walters.
12. Peter Jennings.
13. Mike Wallace.
14. Ed Bradley.
15. Ed.McMahon.
16. Dick Clarke.
Etc. Etc.
Just reading this list - im sad that an era is leaving one by one. The great days of TV is pretty much bygone and so all we have are memories
@@dannysimion And streaming is making it even worse.
We also lost Bert Convy (Super Password).
❎ for respects.
This reminds me of a party
They Should Bring This Back For The Upcoming 100th anniversary in 2026. Come home to the best, everyone. ONLY ON NBC!!
I love this, Its interesting to see where we got our promos from here in Australia. Channel 7 here used this theme with some changes.
No wonder NBC was number 1 in 1988. There were big stars on NBC in 1988:
Bill Cosby, Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Jay Leno, Micheal J Fox
Betty White, Phylisa Rashad, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Ted Danson, John Ratsenberg, Tom Brokaw, Sherman Hemsley, Michael Landon and ALF.
The also host the 3 big sports events, the olympics, the Super Bowl, and the World Series.
You forgot Burt Convy (Super Password), Harry Hamlin (LA Law) and Fred Dryer (Hunter)!
Within 5 months NBC aired the Summer Olympics, the World Series (and one of its most iconic moments the Kirk Gibson home run), the College Football National Championship game (which they couldn't promote here because of how the Bowl system worked back then), and the Super Bowl (which the 49ers won on a last minute Touchdown pass)
And the Smurfs on it's cartoon lineup
Come Home To 1989: Only On NBC. Happy New Year From Your NBC Family.
Wow!!!!! So this was real!!!! I always thought I imagined this😂😂😂😂😂😂

Lord I still miss Santa Barbara so much.
Right? Marcy Walker was in fine form.
I didn't know she had it in her.
This is the only image promo I know of that featured more than one game show host. Pat Sajak for Wheel of Fortune and Bert Convy for Super Password. Sadly, Pat would leave Daytime Wheel for his own talk show on CBS in January and Bert Convy's Super Password would be cancelled along with Sale of The Century in March.

Stepfanie Kramer *STUNS* even at 1:58! What a woman; same for all the other ladies here! 😏
And Dawnn Lewis in that dress at 2:10...what a woman. :D
She's the reason for the success of HUNTER, after she left in 1990, season 7 still had Fred Dryer & Charles Hallahan, but there was no Stepfanie
For 5 seasons on Saturday Nights, the show was in the Top 40 and with Charles Hallahan, the show was in the Top 30 for 4 straight seasons (2 straight in the Top 25 and Season 5 in the Top 20)
Darlanne Fluegel and Lauren Lane (later of The Nanny) are talented in their own right, but when it comes to HUNTER, they weren't Stepfanie Kramer, even Fred said himself on Entertainment This Week during the Fall '90 Preview that no one can replace Stepfanie Kramer and glad that he acknowledge that
You can have the star of the show and the anchor of the show, but none of it matters if you don't have the X-Factor, The Show Stealer, the Blasting Cap
That's what Stepfanie Kramer was on the show, she stole the show, she was the X-Factor and she was the blasting cap
Glad to see that Fred & Stepfanie are still close friends after all these years, especially when they reunited for 2 HUNTER Reunion Movies and a short-lived revival
