Back in 1993 when I was 7, my parents took my brothers and I to the West Highland Railway, but there were no tickets left. We were stood on the platform and must have looked somewhat glum, as the guard asked my mum what was wrong. When she had told him, he led us up to the loco and stood me on the loco’s footplate. I still remember being shocked by how hot it was (well I was 7). He then managed to find space for us on the train. It cost him nothing at all, but I’ll always be grateful. It was a wonderful experience and still a highlight of what I consider to have been rather a fun life.
Music is a dance tune called Bare Necessities by Pat Shaw named after a hardware shop in Bare near Morecambe and played by an Anerican band called Bare Necessities
Wonderful stuff. A trip along the West Highland is still really special. Really appreciate this well-produced and engaging programme, and they picked a perfect driver to interview, someone who understood the beauty and appeal of the line.
Tom Needham I only had the video of the Isle of Man episode and the one of the guy travelling to the South West and being miserable about everything. I watched it until it wore out one night when I was awake with ear ache. First job for my dad the next day was to go out and buy another copy!
So glad to see this series available once more.
Just beautiful ❤️ stunning scenery relaxing and a steam hauled loco hauling the train? Thanks for sharing this video with us.

Opening title sequence with that music so sad and wistful.
Callum MacRaild died 10 years later in 1998 of Motor Neurone disease. He was only 66. Very sad.
Condolences to the family and friends of Callum MacRaild.
Excellent, I loved this series, I happened to be in Oban once and explored the area.
Mallaig is worth the trip.
But try the "Oban prawns"
I lived in the West Highlands as a child so this arouses happy memories of trips on the Mallaig extension.
A very nice video and what a beautiful part of the country to run an LNER K1and kept in very good condition too. Martin. (Thailand)

Nice combination - he loved his job and it seemed to pay well too.
I used to have some of this series recorded off TV as a kid, and I'd watch them repeatedly. Thank you for sharing!
