My grandparents watched this every Saturday night. My grandfather liked Joanne the best of all the performers. I think he really liked her bounces the best. He always smiled watching her play.
My folks always watched Lawrence Welk every week. Now that I 'm older I have a greater appreciation for all of the performers . Clean family music that you remember.
Joann is one show biz giant if there ever was one! We never got enough of her great performances on the Welk show. I'm sole survivor of the family, and I still don't. Thanks for uploading this.
+Justin Boger Always been a huge fan of her even though I'm generations younger. Such an incredible talent, her smile gets me every time. Do we ever see that kind of enjoyment and spark in music anymore?!
My first player piano roll I ever bought 35 years ago was "The Old Piano Roll Blues" on QRS Celebrity Series. I loved it then as I love it now. What a beautiful, talented showman. Love you Joanne, and thank you for your work.
JoAnn Castle was only 20 when she started on Welk and always had that great smile, warmth, and looked like she having a blast.... what's not to love? She understood that this was about entertaining an audience and she really entertained - some modern performers dont treasure the audience they way these old timers do.
Jo Ann was someone I always looked forward to. One of the reasons I love ragtime, and playing the piano. And as for that piano, that thing wore more paint than Tammy Faye Baker wore makeup.
I just read about some of the challenges JoAnn Castle has faced during her life. It almost seems like her larger than life persona was too big to contain in an ordinary life. Still, she sure did brighten up those dull lackluster Welk shows. I wish her all the best.
There is no need to go around to multiple videos from the same artist just to shit on them. You should let the artists speak for themselves through their performance. If someone likes an artist, just let them. This isnt a political debate, we aren't trying to decide who's going in to a hall of fame, nothing important is happening here. People just want to listen to music they like, and although you have every right to do what you're doing, it doesn't mean than you're not an asshole for doing it.
Oh yes... its absolutely the horrible quality. I got this from another channel that had it in low quality and only one channel of audio. So I grabbed it and mixed it to mono and reuploaded it. There might be a better quality version elsewhere though. :)I can't believe people still watch this. I'm not a lawrence welk fan at all... I just liked this song :)
contd---The avclub article has in it, a UA-cam clip of the absolute high point of unintentional humor on the show. It is Gail Farrell and Dick Dale (dressed for a Midwestern prom night) singing "One Toke Over the Line"..REALLY! It could have been viewed as wonderfully funny irony, but it's obvious that Welk was not playing it for laughs. He was simply pandering to the young people when he called it a "modern spiritual." The young people were in fact laughing at him, and he didn't have a clue.
I respect your opinion, and of course musical appreciation is simply a matter of taste. But I would suggest that you broaden your appreciation of ragtime piano (boogie woogie is different), by understanding that the super fast tempo style of ragtime was a performance style that developed long after the ragtime era. You can research it, and find that Scott Joplin and the originators of the form intended that it be played in a stately measured tempo. Not a flashy breakneck pace.
Again, you're free to not listen but some people enjoy this kind of "*%)$" ... Every person is entitled to their opinion but there's also a point where you might consider not raining on other people's enjoyment. It's just music, let people have some fun in their live withour your over analyizing things. -- Also this video has gotten me the most views of any of the few videos I've had posted. Must say something about her. Maybe your opinion is in the minority.
I read about all that stuff after I had started listening to her. Even though her life is a mess, it doesn't mean I can't enjoy her music. I don't have to agree with her life or choices to enjoy a good tune. And I'm far from a lover lol... I just enjoy that style of playing... Its cheerful. But look, if you don't like her you're free to not listen to her as well. No offense.
You are just looking in the wrong places. There are a ton of wonderful players out there (and on youtube) that play ragtime with a great deal of sensitivity. Look up Bach Scholar. He will be to your liking.
Well said, and bravo. And your analysis of "Dannys998877" is absolutely correct, he IS an asshole (with apologies to all the more honorable assholes out there).
No offense taken, and I appreciate that you maintain an open forum for comment.Of course it's a matter of musical and performance taste. Swannee is not the worst JoAnn Castle on UA-cam. The very worst is Maple Leaf Rag played at the breakneck tempo in which she played everything, and dropping at least 10% of the notes. Did she have the ragtime syncopation right? Who could hear it at that tempo? Jumping on the piano stool like a flea and flashing a phony smile at the camera every five seconds.
As for Welk and the odious Jo Ann Castle, it's hard to know if Welk was actually as clueless about music as his fawning 60 and 70 year old audience was, or if he was just in it for the money and didn't care. A UA-cam clip shows the Welk performance of....wait for it......"One Toke Over the Line," which he refers to as "a modern spiritual." Performed by "Gale and Dale," from Oklahoma and Iowa respectively. I swear to God, there should have been a law against what Welk did. :-)
I just wish there were at least a FEW performers who would take ragtime seriously, and take the time and trouble to perform it correctly. On UA-cam right now are a couple of idiots who play ragtime blindfolded, apparently in a speed competition. Another involves a woman who plays it lying on her back under the piano, her hands up over the keys in a reversed position. What IS it about ragtime that attracts clowns like this?
"She sure gets a lot of music out of that old upright".
Love how that piano is re-painted each time to match her outfits.
My grandparents watched this every Saturday night. My grandfather liked Joanne the best of all the performers. I think he really liked her bounces the best. He always smiled watching her play.
Wonderful. As children, we called her the smiling lady. My grandmother forced us to watch every week.
My folks always watched Lawrence Welk every week. Now that I 'm older I have a greater appreciation for all of the performers . Clean family music that you remember.

Her talent, extraordinary...
Her smile, sublime...
Seeing these old shows and hearing the music makes almost want to tear up.Beautiful
You just have to smile! Her musicality, her positive energy, her smile, that amawing hair!
Joann is one show biz giant if there ever was one! We never got enough of her great performances on the Welk show. I'm sole survivor of the family, and I still don't. Thanks for uploading this.
How the hell could this not put a smile on your face. I'm grinning and tapping here. Boy Joanne do we need you now.
She is beautiful and has an amazing smile. Her piano playing is great and such and inspiration.
+Justin Boger Always been a huge fan of her even though I'm generations younger. Such an incredible talent, her smile gets me every time. Do we ever see that kind of enjoyment and spark in music anymore?!
Justin Boge
Jo Ann was a fan favorite from 1959 to 1969, the years she was on Welk's show. 😁

My first player piano roll I ever bought 35 years ago was "The Old Piano Roll Blues" on QRS Celebrity Series. I loved it then as I love it now. What a beautiful, talented showman. Love you Joanne, and thank you for your work.
I don't care how old she is now, I'd still marry her... just like I wanted when i was a child watching her on a black & white television.
there is nothing I like better than someone smiling and just loving thier music while playing it.!!
Such talent, beauty and oh that smile! I've loved it all since the first record I ever had (22 Great Ragtime Hits Vol 1).

Absolutely fantastic. What a beautiful song and talent combined. I salute her.

I watched many a Lawrence Welk show at my grandparents. Now in my 50's I find myself still watching them. Good stuff.
There us no one else in the world that can play like that. period!
AMEN Jeff - Such wonderful memories these clips bring back !!!
Jo Ann! Don't smile like that. *I MIGHT FALL IN LOVE* 😍😍😍
I did fall in love decades ago. She's been my secret girlfriend. Maybe someday I could meet her.
Jo Ann was someone I always looked forward to. One of the reasons I love ragtime, and playing the piano. And as for that piano, that thing wore more paint than Tammy Faye Baker wore makeup.
What a classy, lovely, luscious dish!!!
I was afraid to play ragtime until I saw this lady, one of a kind
Love her on that ragtime piano..
Thank you for sharing. I love jo ann
I'm in awe of this woman
The best of Jo Ann, for sure!
Talented, sweet lady. Cool piano
I don't care about her background ... I love her music and watchin' her perform!!!
good ol' stride playing, so hard but she makes it look effortless.
I don't know why, but I remember as a child thinking that she had really beautiful arms, and the most amazing smile.
My parents bought me and my brother musical spoons for Christmas one year when I was about 10.
That Dippity Do really works!!
She looks very attractive with that hairstyle!
BRAVO
Can a boy have wicked thoughts of such a woman, at the age of 10? HELL YA...
I believe she is still playing with the Lawrence Welk orchestra at his theatre in Branson.
unbelievable talent!!
I just read about some of the challenges JoAnn Castle has faced during her life. It almost seems like her larger than life persona was too big to contain in an ordinary life. Still, she sure did brighten up those dull lackluster Welk shows. I wish her all the best.

I think if you put Jo Ann Castle on one piano & Del Wood on another I don't think I could tell who was better
I get happy and smile:-).
What an absolutely lovely woman

She has a new piano each time, because usually by the end of her performance something inside has caught fire 😂
She plays it like an accordion
shes totaly badass on those 88s
Would we say that the piano hammers are not moving because of the video compression? Or what is going on here?

OMG! ❤️
Sanka!
That's my girl... I love her.

is this gifted lady still alive ?? If so is she still playing ??
+Steinwaygrande She is alive. she had a stroke in the 90's so walks with a cane, she plays a few small gigs.
I wonder if JoAnn ever took any piano lessons or did she do like a lot of muscians did back then...play by ear?
in this video i can see all the Rod Miller inspiration =)
Kuwaiti right! Beautiful :) * Thanks اداء جميل يشعر بسعاده
Musicians these days look like they want to take their own lives while performing. JoAnn was such a little ray of sunshine!

The spoon-man rulezz!
Blondes have more fun
Nothing against Welk, he was tops in what he did, but why Castle locked herself into his brand is a mystery to me. Damn she's a kick ass pianist.
I could leave home for her lol lol lol
Me too! ☺

TV was so much better when Lawrence Welk was on. Also the Honeymooners, &c. PS I am 109 years old.

My life on the farm growning up, milk cows 2x a day, Saturday nite bath and,Lawerence Welk
