India’s massive steel plants in Bhillai and Bokaro were set up with Soviet assistance. The Bhilai plant was set up in 1959 in what is now Chhattisgarh. This was a project that was close to the hearts of the Russians and set the tone for greater integration between Indians and Russians from the 1960s to 80s. Bokaro’s steel plant was set up in 1965 in what is now Jharkhand. The plant, though built with Russian assistance, was called the first Swadeshi plant in India. Aryabhatta, India’s first space satellite was launched from Kapustin Yar in 1975, by the Russians, who used the Kosmos-3M vehicle. India’s first cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma travelled to the Salyut-7 space station from Baikonour.Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev signed the Kudankulam nuclear agreement in 1988, it marked the beginning of a promise of nuclear-powered energy self-sufficiency for the country. Kudankulam is the highest capacity generating nuclear power plant in India.

Russia’s power play during 1971 war that prevented a joint British-American attack on India. India quietly sent Moscow a request to activate a secret provision of the Indo-Soviet security treaty, under which Russia was bound to defend India in case of any external aggression. To counter this two-pronged British-American threat, Russia dispatched a nuclear-armed flotilla from Vladivostok. Moscow ordered the Russian ships to prevent the Americans and British from getting closer to “Indian military objects”.
