- I have been storing up energy for TWO YEARS about these two and it's finally time to unleash it all. I went "Oh Milton's backstory is out now I can finally tell his half of the Buttermint story" and then immediately went apeshit the second an AJR song was placed in front of me. Shout out to my beloved partner Grim for writing this story with me, it's been such a ride together!!
SUMMARY:
Sergei Vrachayev has lost everything, forced to do medical research for the HOPE organization against his will in an attempt to protect his husband Lamar. When it turns out Lamar was murdered not long after they were both kidnapped, Sergei feels his only choice is to leave behind his humanity entirely, to destroy the portal HOPE was working on to another realm, and erase his memory so he might start anew.
A Hatterene wakes up on Milton Beach with only the knowledge that he is a doctor, and seeks work in the nearby town of Threshold- but he soon discovers that his duty is better done in the field after rescuing local courier Hitoshi Hidaka and his child Akiko Sasaki from a mystery dungeon. Hito and Milton form Rescue Team Buttermint to combat the sudden spike in mystery dungeons and criminal activity.
But a new guild has sprouted up, Team HOPE, with access to technology the likes of which this world has never seen. They claim that they can dispel the mystery dungeons entirely, and some people are convinced to join them- including Akiko, by the ghost of their mother Aoi. Their communicators remind Milton of terrible things, and he's certain they're up to no good.
Team Buttermint confronts Team HOPE (and Aoi in the process), learning that they desire the power of Pokémon to take over both worlds, and that their interference is the cause of the mystery dungeons. Slowly, with the help of other brave teams and civilians, the mons manage to drive them back where they came from. Milton isn't satisfied, though, and determines that he needs to return to the human realm to finish what he started. Hito refuses to let him go alone, and his support allows Milton to send out a broadcast unveiling HOPE's crimes against humanity and Pokémon alike, and call the rest of humanity to action, including Sergei's former protégé Antigone.
Lamar's lingering spirit is put to rest, now that Milton has returned to his family in the Pokémon world and found happiness. He knows his husband will be alright, and has managed to find love once again in Hito.

3:55 GHOSTS THAT MAKE ME CRY
LAMAR WAS SUCH A KIND MAN... Grim makes me want to attack xem every time I learn more about who he was. What's left of him just wants Milton to be happy, and if Milton is happy with Hito, then Lamar is happy for them both. (It is a SHARP contrast to Hito's own ghost, Aoi, who wants him and Milton dead.)
Rewatching this and having Feelings about Lamar over "I hope I made you smile / that's all I ever wanted" I'm. Hnng 🥰

This is so amazing! as usual, the way you portray interactions between characters/action scenes is so dynamic, and Hitoshi’s Sylveon/temporary human-sylveon designs are so cool! It was really neat seeing Milton’s perspective of the pmd au
