I beg to differ. Pete is the fan who can't distinguish the character CM punk from the person, Phil Brooks. Dan seems to clearly understand that CM punk is a character, and Phil Brooks is a person, who has managed to blur the lines between fiction and reality better than any pro wrestler or sports entertainer before him. It's the reason why Dan can allow himself to just enjoy it, and postulate on the story beats within the promo, while Pete is stuuck trying to understand why Punk doesn't feel like Punk.
The best description I ever heard, about professional wrestlers, was the idea that the best characters, are the real person turned up to 11. The "11" is the character portrayed on TV. The people behind the characters may have aspects of themselves within the characters, to varying degrees. A great example of this, is to compare The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and CM punk, to the real life people who portray these characters.
Remember: The on screen character is the "11."
Dwayne Johnson is probably a 6 or 7, dialed up 5 or 6 levels to become The Rock
Steve Williams is probably an 8 or 9, dialed up 3 or 4 levels to be Stone Cold.
Phil Brooks is probably a 10.5, dialed up .5 to become CM Punk.
Punk blurs the lines so much, it's hard for some people to distinguish the two, and in fairness, Phil Brooks' reality bleeds over into his character so much, it's understandable why people like Pete respond the way they do. Punk's character is so believable, people are convinced it's real....but it's not. It's a character.
That's a Cult of Personality. Listen to the song's lyrics. It explains everything. Pete stating he doesn't believe Punk (within the mic'd portion of the promo), then hearing the "un-mic'd" portion, and saying that's the real Punk, is like watching a fictional movie about making a movie, and when the in-movie director says 'cut', those are the real fictional characters....They're ALL fictional characters.
Phil Brooks, through is blurring the lines so well, has convinced you CM Punk is 100% who Phil is....
...in reality, that's only 97% true.

I couldn't agree with Pete more. With Punk's promos, I buy into them because I believe that he believes what he's saying (Whether he actually believes what he's saying most of the time is a different discussion). But last nights promo, I didn't believe a single word of it until he pulled the mic away and said "I'm not here to make friends, I'm here to make money." That one line was better and more interesting than anything he said on the mic.

They're doing a LOT of things that make me think Jey is betraying Cody when he fights Roman again.
I've been saying for a few weeks now that Drew isn't the character that they'd have be wrong about someone. He can stay a heel because he's angry that no one believed him, but his character has ALWAYS been shown to be highly intelligent when it comes to seeing through people.
Now they went out of their way to have Randy say to Jey "AS LONG AS YOU'RE NOT IN THE BLOODLINE... we're good"
At the end of the day, it's still Jey's family that benefits from Roman being the champ. He could take the belt off him, but not someone outside the family.

Read a report from PWInsider that CM Punk's promo was cut short because of RKO vs Dirty Dom's match being too long... CM Punk's promo should have been at the beginning of the show, it didn't make sense for the one hour commercial free... I didn't like nor dislike the promo itself, you know WWE, they always make a tease on things to come and would let us choose to watch every week to see how the story unfolds... RAW is 8/10 for me! Great show!

The one thing I don't like about wrestletalk is the discrediting of artists, like someone will be announced as multi-platinum or grammy award winning and it's always called into question or belittled. I also don't know who jelly roll is but Nashville definetly did and if they're multi-platinum it probably means alot of other people did too. It kinda reminds me of when wrestling fans were downplaying bad bunny's fame when he first came in the WWE. You don't have to know the person but comments like "if every one is a multi platinum recording artist,is anyone..." just feel weird considering all multi-platinum means is that asong has sold more than two million copies

Im no psychologist but listening to the first dance promo and this one, it feels like there is an emotion that is just not there for his WWE promo. The one from rampage, you can see in his eyes there is real genuine emotion and it felt like he meant it with the "if any of the personal decisions I have made in my life affected you, I understand. But I was never going to get healthy staying where I was" bit. I just did not get that from this promo. It felt malicious in a way, like he was just saying stuff with a crafted intention of being likeable calling it home.
but also, these is very reminiscent of what he was doing on Collision, with the "tell me when im telling lies", so he might just be carrying that character on over here. He probably really wants to be heel but WWE wants him to be face at least for a bit.

Nakamura specifically dropping "chaos" into his promo was interesting whether that means a return to that version and tactics (started to see the return of the mist recently) of Shin or a hint of him starting a new faction..... Or it was just a throwaway reference meant to make ears of people who know his pre-WWE history prick up 😂

  • @BePatient888

When I watched CM Punk's promo, I thought it was sounded like a forced hostage statement. It was summed up in three phrases:
    "I've changed."
    "I'm home."
"I'm not here to make friends. I'm here for the money."
This was not the old rebel CM Punk. This was sellout, corporate, scripted Punk kissing the ring. I would not have noticed it so much, had he not been fired just 2 1/2 months ago. To see him on a WWE stage, making that promo, to me, made him look like a defeated rebel being paraded around like a trophy. Watch that promo on mute and look at his face. That is the look of a man who is hating himself inside. Maybe the truest thing he said was indeed: "I'm here for the money." If it's a work, it's a GREAT work.

    • @psell8628

It's a work. Rollins called Punk a hypocrite earlier in the night. So doesn't it make sense that Punk puts on a babyface, goody-two-shoes persona for the time being? The last line of the promo hints at his true nature. WWE is playing up the hypocrisy angle for now. The reveal/turn will come, slowly.

The tag team gauntlet was fun (if maybe a bit too long) and I like how they’re building up the Creeeds.
Everything with Randy Orton was great here. The fans REALLY want to see him RKO Rhea.
The Women’s Booking, was not great. Instead of keeping up Zoey’s momentum after a big title match, they just have Nia beat her CLEAN! Why? Also Nia kicked Zoey right in the head while trying to drag her, sloppy. And you had Tegan take the pin in the tag match while Nattie was right there, why?
Cody vs. Nakamura could be a fun filler feud.

And that's so true, BUT ALSO the WWE is a completely different company and that is somewhat down to the actions of Punk, its why Bryan won at WM30, Rollins at WM31, Styles and Ambrose, Kofi at WM35. It can all be linked back directly to the pipebomb

I think for the most part I agree with Dan. I think this almost deluded convincing himself this was the right move after years of rallying against this is so interesting. And that last line gives the viewers at home a different perspective to the audience like an insider joke of what is to come.
Because in AEW 90% of punks promos was I’m here for the fans why would this be different?
He controversy in AEW was based around he’s a different person in front of the camera than behind it and that’s an interesting dynamic to slowly unravel to a heel turn.
I feel we didn’t need a story a promo was fine but maybe give the people that know punks story a little more a subtle dig at this is a different company, how the new management are friends of his and maybe a shot at Vince that is so subtle sponsors and wwe die hard fans didn’t even notice but we notice would make this promo electric
Like the lines in his aew promo he never directly called out wwe but we all know what he meant

Punk vs Seth at RR (Priest steals/wins the title on cash-in). With Cody winning the RR match.
Cody challenges Roman and Punk wins elimination chamber to face Priest at WM.
WM is loaded: Cody finishes the story and Punk overcomes the entire JD to beat Priest. Gunther vs Brock, LA Knight vs Logan Paul, Jey vs Jimmy, Becky vs Ripley, Belair vs Jade.
Post WM Punk and have programs with Gunther, Drew, Brock, maybe SNak. (In whatever order) leading to a Seth return.
Only problem is what Cody does post WM- I guess there’s Solo and maybe Logan Paul. Other than that someone needs to turn like KO or AJ

It’s classic WWE to give you something at a PPV and then leave you hanging until the end of RAW only to be left with more questions than answers.
If a storyline could naturally take a year they’ll make it take 3…
There’s also the fact that they don’t know what to do with him yet, signed him for the merch and tv deals so it will take a while for him to settle in, I just hope they do something like he calls out Seth and then Seth says no, and Adam Pearce says you need to work your way up you don’t just get a title shot straight away.. then he goes on a tear and bothering Seth for a few months so they get a match maybe at rumble and a rematch at mania.
I do not want him winning the rumble - that’s too lazy

But since they didn't give them much to care about (not only from Punk cause apart from couple of things, the rest of the show was easily skippable. And then too, one of the good thing was McIntyre's work, which you don't enjoy if you ain't updated with the product regularly), they won't come back next week. I see myself in those fans too. I watched first RAW in months, and apart from Orton & Punk on it, everything seems absolutely the same as it was months ago.

I hope that after the segment with R-truth and the judgement day, we just see Truth believe he's a member of the judgement day (maybe using old WWE payperview names or just constantly getting their group name wrong)
And for their big group entrance, R-truth could show up behind them dressed as a vampire.

One flaw I see with Dan's idea is that the story paints WWE as the villain. No matter how you may feel about the company itself IRL, in *kayfabe* they're a face company. They listen to the fans, thwart cheating heels, storyline morale is up, etc. With Dan's story, it's just turning them back into a heel Authority if it's about Punk being an unwilling cog in the corporate machine.

Didn't Punk when he was in AEW say ROH was like his home. AEW was his place. He was the one running the show, He gets fired goes back to WWE. I'm Home. He is such a player. He knows how to play the crowd. He didn't want to come back to WWE until he had nowhere else to go. Now he is back and I don't want the ending we are getting. I don't like Cody, but Punk is toxic. He is going to try and weasel his way into Wrestlemania main event and push Gunther out of HIS main event. Just like Cena Rock that he still whines about.

  • @litguru4748

CM Punk literally told you before he started the promo "This isn't going to be the type of stuff you'd usually hear me say". He told you from the get go that it wouldn't be a typical CM Punk promo - it would be something different.
    "He sounded fake and manufactured."
Almost as if that was by design? You can't genuinely sit there and tell me WWE were trying to make him come across as a sympathetic babyface from that promo. The whole thing screamed "insincere and conceited". They're leaning into him being a hypocritical jackass, hell, they even had Seth Rollins call him a hypocrite earlier in the night.
It's obvious where they're going with this: they're having Punk become everything that he once hated, the part time veteran who's only in it for the money, and once they have Rollins confront him about that, you'll get "scorched Earth" CM Punk back.
This is Triple H's booking. The payoff is usually amazing but the build to it can be really slow. Let it cook.

Heres the thing, 9 years ago, WWE were the bad guy in the CM Punk and Wrestling story. Today, its almost a no lose situation for them. If it goes well, then all that bad history is firmly laid at the feet of Vince and the old guard. HHH has truly changed WWE and can manage top stars, as a former Wrestler, better than the rich fan with a reputation of playing with his action figures. If it goes badly, well Punks the problem isnt he, thats how it will come across, Issues within AEW, issues within WWE. I'm not suggesting this is bury them from within, but Punk's shadow has loomed over WWE for nearly a decade. Unless they royally fuck this up, I just cant see anything other than them coming out of this better than they looked before it. It may well become, that CM Punk going too, and fucking up in AEW is the best thing that has ever happened to WWE.

Why everything has to be immeditaley.... its a big deal Punk is back in WWE so if you say fans who tuned in today it was a missed opportunity well No... if you are a real Fan you will get it... the promo was fine not great but its a story that needs to playout... so much of complaint on just one episode.

💯 agree! Back during the Attitude Era, the dirt sheets didn’t matter as much to a majority of the fans nor did the commentary of other bystanders. We just tuned in every week desperate to find out what was said next!
While I do love wrestling podcasts, there’s a reason I tend to avoid them and it’s no different today than it was during the Attitude Era when I avoided the dirt sheets: wrestling fans will always p*ss off other wrestling fans when they share their opinions.
The secret to remaining excited about the current wrestling storyline: do not talk about it online. You will not find the instant gratification you seek.

There is an intense wall between what WWE and AEW hold in terms of what they want to produce. Don’t get me wrong, as a hardcore wrestling fan, I would love to watch Punk discuss being fired and being the anti and his time in AEW, y’all forget something. Casual WWE fans do not give an f word about that stuff.
AEW can do those explosive promos breaking the 4th wall and everything because their fan base is more traditionally hardcore. WWE has never really been in the business of pleasing the 4th wall breakage, even during the Helmsley Era. And that speaks to a real thing people should realize: Punk can’t be Punk anymore.
What made Punk interesting then? He was anti company of a company that was actually bad under the Vince regime. Now, he can’t do that. WWE will always cater to their deals and their casuals, we will always be second. While I want to be proven wrong, I don’t have my hopes up.
Punk will be interesting, and I’m along for the ride.
