Half the content they're adding to Forestry should have been added into Hunter. Why are we making Bird Costumes and catching Pheasants and getting Fox Whistles or whatever. This shit has absolutely nothing to do with Woodcutting.

Worth noting, "Part 2" was not really polled. The poll only included Campfires for Firemaking (no teas or buffs), a few cosmetic rewards from events, and 2 new shop rewards (Sawmill Vouchers and the Bird Nest Gloves). All the new part 2 events were not polled recently; all the forestry events were polled back in March (Question 8 with 92% Yes) and some were delayed from part 1. Same for 2H Axes, already polled back in March (Question 16 with 88% pass rate). So the "Forestry: Part Two" poll really isn't responsible for most of the part 2 update.
Personally not to thrilled the beaver is getting 2 transmog in addition to the funky log all from the same content, but otherwise I find all these rewards to be harmless, at least with how they were pitched. The biggest change is the AFK Firemaking, but it is half the exp and Wintertodt already "ruined" that skill 50+ anyway so it just gives players a slower option to reach 50 or more of a reason to buy and burn logs post-50, which could help log prices a tad.
For the forestry events, in concept I think they are fine but haven't done enough or seen enough of the execution to really judge em. I think the problem is that they may be too common and a bit too generous with exp. But I do think having an opt-in way to make AFK trees more involved and varied for a bit better exp is not a terrible concept so hopefully the part 2 events will go towards fixing the issues of part 1 rather than amplifying them. Not a huge fan of the 2h axes using run though and wish they were just a X% chance to cut an extra log for no additional exp, but I believe there will be a beta of them so maybe that can still change.

Good takes here. Fox transmog could've been a thieving pet or to do with hunter. I love the pet and am happy, but not happy with the way it's added. The reward space needs streamlined, the XP rates need to be reduced, otherwise I'm chill with it. I don't think we should forestry ize other lacking content, but engaging skilling content would be welcome.

I love forestry it makes wc more interesting and more interactive. If its still cutting logs and trading for rewards whats the difference between wc and getting leaves and trading for rewards instead of logs? It will be hard to trade logs for rewards as we saw with all the botting and the amount of logs already in the game. You are not forced to do the new forestry updates you can still wc by urself. I would love to see the game advance and change because as we all know without new content the game will get stale and die off.

  • @tustinbear5831

if i could rework forestry i would remove all events. I would keep the tree respawn and each tree gives passive leaves as you cut. the more people on the tree the more leaves you get per hour. you use the fully tradeable leaves as currency to buy items from the shop OR you can burn them in fires as a bondfire like thing. it burns ~10 leaves at a time for about half the exp of their respective logs

What would that change? I'd go from AFK'ing trees in the woodcutting guild to..... afk'ing trees in the woodcutting guild on a specific world because more people = better. Thats not new content. I'd be fine if that was a "node update" to all nodes, mining, fishing, woodcutting etc. But as a piece of skilling content? That isn't.

The issue with Forestry is the same issue that's ruining pve for some people, what runescape 3 gave up trying to solve, and has terrible influence on the younger generations in real life. It's not about the content itself, but how the entertainment industry in their fight for control over the attention economy is consistently removing the natural downsides that we are supposed to experience with the upsides. So relatively speaking, our baseline of what we find pleasurable goes up and up and up, resulting in us not only not finding normal things pleasurable enough, but also needing more and more stimulation to find something pleasurable. The situation is a "candybar phenomenon". You give a kid 1 candybar and he says, "Wow, thanks you're super awesome!" You give him a 2 candybars and he says, "Awesome! You're my best friend!" Then you give him 1 candybar and he wonders, "Wait a second, but you just gave me 2 candybars, and now I only get 1?" Obviously he liked receiving just 1 candybar 10 seconds earlier, but now he sounds disappointed to receive it. So what changed? It's because by giving 2 candybars you increase the baseline to (1+2)/2 = 1.5, and so giving just 1 candybar now becomes lower than the baseline, hence the disappointment.
You make gimmicky slayer bosses and you're super awesome because they're better than giant mole, kq, and dks. Then you make cox, tob, and inferno and you're the best game developers alive. But then you make toa and a quest with 4 bosses, 4 awakened variants, 4 bis rings, virtus, blood torva, 4 ancient sceptre upgrades, 4 pets, huge lore implications, and..... it's not enough for some people because cox, tob, and inferno increased the baseline for pleasure so high that toa and dt2, despite being massive great updates that loads of other people enjoy, don't meet their baseline. Same with runescape 3. They basically threw in the towel and made everything 300k+ xp/hr and 20m+ gp/hr which makes everything extremely pleasurable, and so no matter how how high the baseline goes, it's always going to be met. In real life, boomers started with cut and dry newspapers, and now they have whatever fox news is. Zoomers started with facebook and minecraft, and now they have tiktok and fortnite. Old school runescape started with 20 minute 3k xp quests and green dragons, and now every update is a 100k+ xp grandmaster quest, a 3m+ gp/hr boss, or meta skilling method.
But the point is you don't need to never eat a cookie again, start taking cold showers every morning, and start training for ultra-marathons like jake on the bro-school podcast says. The point is that tomorrow eat vegetables instead of having another cookie, read a book before or after playing video games, go take a walk after staying inside, because if you balance the highs with lows, eventually the baseline for pleasure goes back to normal. So sure, go ahead and add forestry, add blue inferno, add whatever, but balance it out with the lows as well. By experiencing the lows and bringing the baseline back to normal, it will make the highs relatively higher and the lows relatively not as low, meaning you can enjoy the whole game instead of only the parts where you go "clicky clicky clicky".

I'm in favor of polls existing, but it seems like people are too inclined to vote yes to nearly everything because they think "more content = good" is the only thing that matters. Even if more content is good, there's limited development time and resources to put into the game and i don't feel like this is something we need to dedicate months of dev time to. The level scaling and social aspect was likely the simplest part of the update and was the only part that was necessary to revitalize the skill and make people enjoy it.

What a lot of people don't get is the game doesn't have to stay old forever. It's based on an older version initially, that's why it's called Old School. But that doesn't mean it can't evolve into its own thing, which it has. They need to rework the game to retain players and bring more players in, because at the end of the day a game is just a business. Reworks aren't so bad when they're for things so outdated. Woodcutting was basically the same for 20 years, and the rework won't make the skill any worse to the majority of players. If anything, it makes the skill more entertaining to train. Most people didn't really like clicking a tree every 30 seconds and that being the whole skill, and even more people don't like tick manipulating to skill. So this was a good middle ground. Tbh hunter also does need a bit more because the main options atm are catching chins and salamanders until they get to herbiboar. They could buff falconry or something to make that a bit better too. Or even make implings in puro puro give decent xp.

The skills are recognizable still. There SHOULD be a method between AFK and Tick manipulation rates where a user can pay SOME attention and get rates better than afk but less than full focus. Forestry adds a 3rd option which is definitely healthy for the game and many other skills; not just woodcutting... It doesn't break the game at all and at least now when I woodcut, I can actually talk to someone since 99% of the player base isn't afking anymore. The best social update that I have seen, and I try my best to remain unbiased. It makes no sense at all to say that JUST the xp rates should of been updated between the trees and calling that forestry. This was meant to be a healthy overhaul that looks into the entirety of the skill and that includes social behavior. The random events that happen force us to communicate which keeps dialog flowing; you remove this, you remove social aspect. Changing yews from 35k xp afk to 60k xp to "fix" the skill is NOT it...

@@janitorizamped To be honest, it doesn't matter at all if it's a sapling or you're shooting a certain color basketball into a hoop where you have to work with a team to find what color to shoot... The MAIN importance is socializing and working together with others to solve a problem. The puzzles preferably should make sense but the XP rates in terms of attention required is 99% of what the focus should be. The attention is more than AFK and less than tick manipulation so the XP should be somewhere in-between. That's all that really matters; the rest is just for decoration...

Unique pets being from specific events from a specific method in a specific skill is meh.
Cosmetic gear is fine, i couldnt care either way.
The new events add variety to the method for woodcutting, which is good and what we voted for originally. Forestry as it is is a net positive to woodcutting. It makes chopping trees together not a negative, which is a win. Events add variety to the skill but aren't required. EHP is still Teaks. Redwoods AFK is still ridiculously strong. The 2H Axe buffs this for mains but isn't worth the time for irons.
I don't agree with your constant take of Forestry being bad. I think its overall good. Its far better than traditional WC and has absolutely helped it. The idea of nodes not encouraging people to COMPETE with eachother in designated skilling spots is good, it encourages socialising in an MMO. I don't think everything needs "timed events" as a solution. Thats left to its own method in Forestry and shouldn't just be cloned to other skills. I'd rather we just make nodes work like this, and then add NEW methods through platforms like Sailing.
Reward shop is fine but what I hated about this 2nd part is they sort of seemed to.. ignore the reward shop? Wtf is my bark for? I've finished the shop, and now Part 2 is.. unique cosmetics from specific events? I feel this is just gonna be a Stale Baguette 2.0, where its "only 1/64 so its common" but being behind a 1/8 event roll makes it wayyy too rare for what it is. I feel they only did this so people that have already done Forestry can't just buy the new rewards day 1 and not return to the method to generate hype around it.
I think you're looking at the events as "its not woodcutting". But it is, its a METHOD of woodcutting. Is killing a snow element firemaking? No, its a skilling BOSS that uses those skills. Its fine to have variety for these skills. I don't think its "toon town" to have methods in skills not adhere strictly to their basic identity, and Forestry is probably their BEST effort at keeping something "oldschool" while adding new things to it. The idea of chopping yews and willows and magics with a crowd of people is the MOST oldschool experience ive had, and the events just added something more interesting than AFK chop to that. I wish more of the events encouraged working as a group to figure out solutions and share them, like the Sapling. This really encouraged talking in Public chat.

Based take from Sae Bae :) My take on forestry is just let them cook. We will have to see how it plays out with part 2 and in the beta, but i'm happy to just sit back and let the game developers develop the game. You made some fair points, but I don't think logs as a currency would have worked out unless they were say anima logs that were a rare chance when cutting. Only difference there from how it is now that they wouldn't be stackable, which I guess could work okay. Otherwise there are already billions of logs in the game for mains and i just don't think that would work out as a currency. I do hope they refine the pool of woodcutting events. We will have to see when its in game how it feels, but honestly there are just bigger fish to fry. I'm not too concerned about skilling updates so long as they dont get out of hand with exp rates. If the update is fun for new players then thats a win.

Mining/Fishing/Smithing/Runecrafting/Hunter/etc. are all fine they have minigames and variety that are way better than standing at a tree mindlessly chopping away. Woodcutting was the worst skill (imo), I don't find afking looking at the screen every 3minutes to click once is playing the game, atleast with forestry you can actually interact more with the community and surrounding areas.

Then if you want to put your leaves back into the Forestry basket since they are taking up like 6 bank slots, you need to take them out one inventory at a time and click Fill. Seriously. Do you think that the mods are too influenced by the voices of twitter/reddit? At this point in the game I feel like the polling system is irrelevant and used for the wrong reasons (micro changes, common sense changes, etc.). I think the way they broadcasted Forestry was misleading and got a lot of hopes up when it finally released. WCing is a great skill post 90, but this update really makes it feel like they polished a turd.
I think the overall goal for minigames like this is to attract new players to the game and not feel like the game is a time sink, but in reality it is. I'm nearing max on my ironman and thats over 200 days played. Granted, not everyone wants to max an account, but it is a great goal. So could you imagine pitching this game to a friend that has never invested any time in it, not even in the miniclip days in computer class and say "Hey there is this game I play, but in order to do anything fun you have to sink about 100-150 hours into it". Now I'm not saying that this needs to be a private server and you can max within a few days, but jeez... It wouldn't kill the game to have multiple types of xp rates -- Have an afk method where it averages 60-70k per hour and an active rate where you can manage 120-150k an hour. Not every skill needs to be a time sink or should you have to tick manipulate to get to those rates. This is also just my opinion, obviously there is a method to the madness and a lot of the mechanics have anti-cheat thoughts behind it, but it would just be nice if things were just a little bit faster.

i really like forestry, i'm not good enough/it's too hard for me to 3/2/1.5 tick anything for even a small period of time, therefore wcing was just sit and wait. this now gives wcing a good middle ground of activity (mining, rc, smithing, hunter, and fishing already have those middle ground methods). more events = more variety which helps keep things fresh. imo random events are a very old school thing, and having more wc specific random events from wcing is not bad. I do think that it's good for wcing but most, if not all, skills dont need this treatment due to the fact that there is variety in methods already.
Also, you could argue that they should have just made it a boss like tempoross, but i disagree. Most, if not all, skilling updates have been side activities. so, it's nice that an update can have a wider effect. but, i do think it should be a very rare occurrence

I just don't see any problem with adding more active alternatives that give increased xp rates to skills that are currently considered " afk" skills like mining, WC, etc.
" it feels like Toon Town" " It's not oldschool" these aren't real objections in my mind. Why is it bad for the game, why is it bad for the games longevity, how is it hurting the playerbase. I think if you and the other older player base have concerns and want to push back on this style of update you need to be able to come up with stronger arguments then " This isn't how OLDSCHOOL is supposed to be!". Oldschool is a growing flourishing game with a large community. Saying "muh nostalgia" just isn't enough to bring people over to your side. What is your problem with the events? Is it the way they're designed? Why. What don't you like about them? How would you change them for the better?
I see so much of the vocal minority screaming into the void about these types of game changes passing but no one ever takes the time to actually make an argument with actual points on why it's bad. They just scream about new players ruining the game via the polling system because " they don't understand what it means to be oldschool".
Convince me. Because until then I just don't see any problem with making these style of updates, I think they're cool and good for the game. They add more interactive grinds that break up the monotony of afk skills. They give more options for a world that's attention span is getting shorter and shorter. More options limits burnout. Currently I'm doing 99 mining on my main. There are two ways that I level. I can do something insanely afk like MLM, or I can sweat my balls of 3t gem mining. I don't mind those options, I play this game for a reason. That being said, I am now EXCITED for my next 99 ( wc) because of forestry. Now there is a third option! An inbetween, somethings else to break up the grind. Something new interesting and fun to engage with. That's why I believe forestry is good for the game.

    • @andrewprahst2529

      Allow me to try.
First of all, I don't think Sae Bae or most people would disagree with your first paragraph at all. It isn't about the niche the method fills in regards to AFKness or XP at all.
It's the specific themes and styles of these activities that people don't like.
Let me try to break down the accusation that something isn't "old school".
Old School was a mode released to capture "what runescape could have been" in wake of new RS, which took design influence more modern games.
The appeal wasn't just that players could relive their nostalgia, but that the simplicity of the old design was actually preferable to the newer game.
If I had to isolate some characteristics that I think make the old, simpler design style special, I would say:
      1. Readability. It's usually pretty easy to tell what you can do with something even if you've never seen it before, just by looking at it, or perhaps by examining it.
      2. Consistency. Generally things work the same way across the game. If they don't, it's usually in a designated mini-game area.
      3. Intuition. If an interaction doesn't have a direct real-world counterpart, there's typically a pretty clear cause and effect relationship. For example, when you shoot an arrow, one is subtracted from your quiver and is placed on the ground, unless it breaks or you have a special magnetic and magical backpack, in which case it retrieves the arrow for you.
      Forestry goes against these principles.
1st of all, forestry events are somewhat obscure; it isn't immediately clear how to engage with them, which is against the spirit of normal woodcutting.
That brings me to my 2nd point. If forestry events were limited to one forest or group of forests, it could be easily explained why these particular events happen around these particular trees. But instead, the devs insisted that the events be an expansion to the ordinary loop. Because of that, the extremely gamified experience feels very out of place in the world. The same trees that functioned normally a second ago now do strange things as soon as you put on a backpack.
That brings me to the 3rd point. The actions that make up forestry can seem arbitrary and unintuitive. Why do ordinary trees suddenly turn into saplings sometimes as soon as you put on a backpack that can hold forestry supplies?
Or why do you get more or less "anima infused bark" when pollinating a flower? And why does possessing a "bee on a stick" make this event possible and give extra rewards when you have one yourself? Why does adding mulch ingredients in different orders change the nutrient content?
It's all very unintuitive especially for mechanics that are present all across the game world.
Now, while it's true that no piece of content significantly affects the longevity of the game, it can set a precedent. The degree to which Jagex designs more content like forestry is the degree to which they stray from the charm that makes Old School popular.
And to be clear, "Old School" does not mean there cannot be wc methods with diversion and distractions. Cleaning up Tai Bwo Bwana is a very old wc minigame that works just like that, and sulliceps is a more recent one.
In fact, skill-specific random events were in the game a long time ago, and I wouldn't have minded Forestry if the events were a little simpler like the evil tree event or even just bird nests falling from trees.

    • @andrewadams530
      @andrewadams530 Рік тому

@@andrewprahst2529 Finally someone actually interested in engaging in a discussion about the topic, welcome and I appreciate your well thought out and written response.
      1. Readability: To be frank, I feel like all of the Forestry events are extremely straight forward. The roots one you just chop the roots and sometimes you say " ooh a special green root" which is superior. The flower one is slightly more confusing, but it easily falls into the category of " by examining it" because after one interaction it's easy to figure out what's going on and even more so now that they've changed the flower colors. Maybe the hardest one is probably the mulch one, but that one isn't really that difficult after you try it the first time. And if you don't want to figure it out, forestry is a group experience most of the time and you can just wait for or ask the other people to literally tell your combination.
      2. Consistency: I feel like in your explanation of this you actually show that Forestry fits this perfectly. It isn't a minigame, therefore it works across the entire game. That fits exactly within your scope for consistency, and you make it seem like that upsets you in a later paragraph, but if it didn't work this way then it actually wouldn't consistent according to your own definition.
      3. Intuition: The reason that putting in certain things to the mulch gets you more points is because different things break down in different ways to create compost. And depending on what plants you have around they could be pulling different nutrients from the ground more heavily, and therefore need a different type of compost to help them grow more quickly. This is why things like crop rotations exist for farmers. The game with Bees relates to forests because pollinators are one of the most important forms of life for any advanced ecosystem, helping plants and trees to grow. All of these events feel very based in reality if you know a lot about forestry as it is in the real life. Personally, I don't really feel that this point resonates with me when I think of old school, but just to play along with the definitions you gave and show how I actually think Forestry fits perfectly into your description of Oldschool feel.
When it comes to me when I think " OldSchool" I also think of a more simplistic game type. Specifically, one that can be completed easily with only using your mouse. Although different hotkeys exist and I take advantage of them literally always, I believe that " oldschool" is encompassed by the Point - n - click aspect of the game. And this is one of the primary reasons why EOC went over so poorly with the community. I think it is apt that people often lovingly/jokingly call osrs " The medieval cookie clicker" and I think like cookie clicker there should be a variance in different types of activities that allow you to either actively or passively gain " income".
On top of that, I also agree with you that Oldschool is made to capture what RS could have been if EOC had never come around. But I don't agree that the idea behind OS is to simply remain that game from 2007 forever. I think the game is meant to grow and evolve into it's own version, the same way if we could go back and simply cut EOC out of the timeline, RS2 wouldn't have just stayed the same, but also would have continued to grow and change in new and different ways. Adding new content, such as forestry, that allows old dead skills, like woodcutting, to move forward in time and receive and overhaul that brings them up to speed with the rest of the game is a plus. The same way that PvM has received different raids, quests have received new quests, PKers have receive wildy changes like Ferox and BH, Skillers deserve a much needed facelift to their portion of the game.
Forestry is completely optional. People say that it isn't optional because it " overshadows sulliceps, and changes the xp meta" but if they are so worried about xp/hr they should be 1.5t teaks anyway which is still better xp/hr then Forestry. If they're looking for something more afk/ relaxed, there are lots of options for that as well, and forestry doesn't encroach on those since you have to be doing the events as they pop up, and even moving around between tree patches can give you better xp. All of which you can do, simply by using your mouse no keyboard required.
In conclusion, I believe forestry fits squarely into what it means to be " Oldschool" in 2023.

    • @andrewprahst2529
      @andrewprahst2529 Рік тому

@@andrewadams530 I do still think you're misunderstanding some things.
For example, I don't think people who oppose forestry are against the idea of growing and expanding in general, they're just against this specific style of expansion. There may be people who think like that, but neither me or Sae Bae have said anything like that, and really love new content if it is designed a certain way.
Another thing is that you seem to think "readable" is the same thing as "easy-to-learn". That's not what I mean. Even if forestry events are easy to learn, they aren't immediately obvious, which contributes to them feeling out of place. By contrast, when a spider or gemrock spawns from hacking jungle, it's immediately clear what to do with them. This isn't better because it's "easier" they just better fit the aesthetic of old school design because they are self explanatory, and while they are a little wacky they are thematically believable things to find while hacking jungle. When it comes to forestry, even though the mulch event is easy to learn, there's nothing about the tree turning into a sapling that instinctually prompts the player to start piling it with mulch. And when it comes to making the mulch, pay attention to my words carefully: it's not just a matter of the ingredients of the mulch, but the ORDER in which you add them. If you add two green leaves, then one brown leaf, that may be the optimal recipe, but adding one brown leaf then two green leaves is considered wrong. And again, it's not that this activity is necessarily hard to learn, just that it doesn't make sense. It feels like they are forcing mechanics they believe to be fun into places they don't belong. Which takes me to the consistency bit.
I did not mean to say minigames are bad because they are in one location, not integrated with the rest of the game. That may be something some people say, and it may or may not be true, but that's not what I'm trying to say here.
At least when I walk into a designated minigame area, it's natural to assume the things in there may work in a special way, like when I walk into barbarian assault, it isn't weird to assume that the enemies there work differently than the ones outside.
But imagine if instead of releasing barbarian assault as a minigame, they released a cape that, when worn, made nearly all enemies change so that you had to switch attack styles as called out by a partner. You could still kill monsters normally, but the cape provides a boost to experience and drops, so that anyone being efficient should use it unless they are doing things like raids, where xp and individual monster drops don't matter. The controls are still point-and-click, it's an optional activity, and raids are still usually the best money, but because the way you are supposed to fight monsters in the broader game has been changed, the game would feel less old school to me.
That's how forestry currently feels to me.
Whether or not Jagex should be making more single-area minigames, I believe mixing minigame-like mechanics into the broader game is even worse than putting those mechanics into a single area.
And to be clear, that doesn't mean I don't think they can make new game-wide activities, just that there are specific types of mechanics I object to being used in them.
On the subject of overshadowing sulliusceps...
You've talked about how forestry is a nice alternative between super AFK methods and super intense methods. The thing is, there was a method just like that for woodcutting, before Forestry. That method was sulliusceps. You cut one down, then have to run to the next, which involved picking up snakes and throwing them at swamp monsters, raking and chopping away vines, avoiding poisonous spines, and filling pits with mushrooms. That filled the niche you were talking about. Now, if forestry was a little bit more afk than 'sceps for a little less xp, that would be fine, but it's actually more afk AND more xp. That's the problem people have with it.

You have to realize in order for this game to survive as long as Runescape has as a whole, changes that people do not like will happen unfortunately we as a WHOLE community will never see eye to eye. The obby cape mains of today will never be the Gnomonkeys of tomorrow.

I dont think you're overreacting, I personally dont like a lot of the changes and additions from part 2. I like foresty kinda, its fine but they are adding so much that doesn't jelly well with me. I like the events they've added, minimal and you only do them if you want too, however they do eat up run energy, which makes me really dislike the fact that 2-handed axes (a completely unpolled thing btw) use run energy to work. I dislike that they are adding this problem and 'solving' it by adding the foresters ration. I dont think we needed the ration at all, especially since its only use will be for prolonged use of the 2h axe. Why did they have to add a dumb cavate? Why couldnt they just introduce a flat upgrade to axes, its a Woodcutting expansion, I dont see why it couldnt just be a flat upgrade. Campfires sound like a fine idea, makes Firemaking outside of wintertodt afk and thats fine in my book. I dont know why they are adding tea's, we have Herblore as an entire skill, why are we adding lesser herblore somewhere else? Worst part is that now these boosts will probably be required across the game for meta reasons. I also personally dont like the look of the outfits they've added, but thats a personal thing.
