When I was small, I wanted to be a samurai and carry around kanata in my saya. It was more devastating for me to know that samurais don't exist anymore, than to know Santa wasn't real. But I still do cosplay and dress up as one. I should go to this shop and buy more of my goodies!
If you haven't watched them already, Shogo made some videos where he and Kazu have been to a few places where they will dress you in real Samurai outfits. Real in the sense that they are high quality and as close to the real thing as modern techniques can make.
I can't think of a more plesant day that walking around Kyoto and having a friend show me his favourite local blade and armor shop. Very much enjoyed this video. Well done Shogo!!
As someone who might never get the chance to go to japan and learn iaido, I'm really grateful Shogo, for making this video. You have let me get a taste of what it's like to start training with iaido.
You actually don't need to go to Japan to learn Iaido. A lot of European and American countries also have Iaido clubs, so there may actually be one near you. So, if you want, you might be able to learn it yourself!
I am learning Araki style of Iaido from my really valuable Japanese senseis near Yokohama. It is not just an activity. Iaido adjusts your stance and walking, improves imagination and affects way of thinking in a good way. Thanks to Shogoさん, people should learn about Iaido more and more. And I also bought my Iaitō from Tozando.
I was lucky enough to, after a year of buying from their online shop, visit this store in 2011 when I lived a train ride away in Osaka. I got a more correctly-sized hakama, and a new iaito (since my one in my home country had to stay behind). Great store, and fortunately they had an English speaker on staff so I could communicate effectively.
You can start with a bokken at the beginning. This is actually recommended. I trained with the bokken for more than 1 year because I was totaly fine with it. There is sooooo much to learn, that there is not much need for an Iaito. ^^
I love learning more about the culture through your videos, and it makes me more excited to learn more about the traditions Japan holds. Thank you for your content Shogo! I hope you, and your family are doing well and continue to do so.
Wow, $260-400 for getting into a new discipline makes this very accessible. It's much harder to find a dojo where I live, I think. I really like this shop. The gentleman at the counter was very helpful. Thanks for the video, Shogo!
Arigato Shogo! I deeply appreciate your videos and am so glad I found your channel. Your videos are always entertaining and never fail to interest❤😊 This is probably one of the most knowledgeable places on the internet to learn about everything concerning the different budo martial arts. Very exciting indeed... Much love to the crew and everyone apart of this
Domo arigato, Shogo for showing me the Tozando store. I bought my first iaido sword from them back in 2006. I live in Philadelphia in the USA and have not been able to visit Japan since 2002. It was something special to get to see this video.
I was really considering trying Iaido out for the past week, and this video really helped clarify what I need to start out. But there is no place where I live that teaches it and it does seem pretty expensive. But it really looks fun to do, and I love seeing the passion of the people who practice it.
All you need to start is a bokken. There's videos you can copy from to get you started. Eventually you will want to find a Sensei but you can really get started simply.
@@treevetales170 Cool. I will try to look for a store that I can purchase one from. I looked at the Tozando online shop for a Bokuto, but it is temporalely unavailable because of its shipping size.

After watching your videos I'm now starting my training in Iaido, I had my first session last week and it looks like this may end up being the martial art that I want to train in. Unfortunately due to the laws and complications of customs over here in the UK my Sensei's don't suggest importing from Japan as it's just as likely that someone who doesn't know the exemption laws around Katana will just scrap it before you can explain to them that you are legally allowed to own them. The Dojo I'm joining uses Nine Circles for its Iaido equipment. I'm really looking forward to when I'll be ready to move on from a Bokuto to an Iaito.
What a great video, everything was so instructive and easy to follow. I really like how detailed your questions and indeed the answers you got from the store worker. Excellent work 👏
Thanks you as always Shogo. Your informational videos like this one are always helpful and detailed. Keep visiting Tozando's, I really enjoy seeing the place every time you go there.
Hello from Brazil, Shogo!!! I just found your channel about 3 weeks by now and I feel your work is everything that japanese culture lovers needed on UA-cam! In 3 weeks you brought a lot of information and enlightened a lot of my doubts about Japan that I was looking for about 10 years! Thank you very much for your fantastic work and I already consider you as my japanese friend in Kyoto!! And as a friend, I would like to ask you: please, could you make a video talking more about the sword meditation in iaido? I'm planning to move to Vancouver 🇨🇦 next year and I'm sure that I'll look for a dojo over there! Again: thank you very much for everything! Best regards! 🙏🏻
I needed to make all of my Iaido-purchases online (with the help of my sensei). It was so fun to see a shop like this! It seems to be much more affordable to order in person! Thank you very much for sharing, much appreciated.
This video is very helpful to me because it will help me find what I need for Iaido katana training for beginners. Tozando is the perfect place to purchase items and clothing for Iaido training for beginners.
A great video. I went through this journey a couple of months ago (a by product of the COVID lockdown wanting to find something to mix up physical training), bought all my kit from Tozando and happy to do business with them again.
Thank you very much Shogo. You are amazing. I am from Hong Kong, just started to learn my new martial arts - Iaido. I just love this very and very much. It was so much fun but I was just struggling looking for the correct equipments, especially the iaido for my beginner training and your introduction, explanation, and informative feedback give me so much insights and ideas. Thank you very much Shogo. Hopefully I can have a chance to speak to you in face for more when I can travel to Japan soon. From Nicholas, Hong Kong
Thanks for the video, Shogo. I am planning to take Iaido in Singapore in the future. I hope you would do some playlist on Iai Kata and demonstration or perhaps, a tutorial
Thanks to you Shogo, I was able to visit Tozando a few days ago during my first (not last for sure) trip to Japan. I was amazed at the genuine armors and katanas displayed upstairs and I am currently considering starting to practice Iaido! Also, I was able to wear the Honda armor from Kouzu Shokai also thanks to you and it was such an amazing experience! Can't wait to return to Japan now :)
i found myself pausing the video to stare at all the displayed tsuba in the glass case everytime the camera would zoom into something on the counter. i love swords and katana always have such great artwork on them.
Excellent & very educational video on Iaido gear & Tozando shop. I just started my Iaido training two months ago & loving it! I’m a Big & Tall fella, I’m having a hard time finding a Gi, Hakama, & Obi belt that fits. I hope that Tozando shop could customize gear that fits so that could better fit in the Dojo. Thank you Shogo for your inspiration for Iaido! Randy
Shogo, I am interested to know what your favorite Iaito and katana are. The dimensions, color, tsuba, fuchi, kashire, menuki and why you chose them. Also thank you for making this informational video for those of us who are interested in training. 🙏
Just discovered this channel. Even though there were english sub titles, the whole experience between the both men seemed so polite and respectful which i presume is down to the Japanese culture. The video itself is so informative. I have been training on and off (due to ill health) for a number of years with a Bokken I am now looking into the legalities of importing an Iaido sword in to Ireland. The law here has criminalised the ownership of an actual Katana and before I place an order anywhere I want to find out the status of importation of a training sword. Also I have just subscribed
My dogi and kaku obi were bought from Tozando. My dojo specifies we wear white dogi, my kaku obi is brown with a white patterning. But we don’t wear juban, my dogi is washed regularly.. As for oiling my Iaito, I just do this every now and again mainly to clean the blade. I don’t use specific oil, just old fashioned lightweight 3 in 1 oil, a little spread over the blade usually brings up the shine…
I started kenjutsu this year and I still don't have all my equipment. God, if it's more or less the same, that's a lot of money, I should have thought twice 😅 Anyway I love it. I think it's one of the best decisions I made in my life!!! 💖💖💖💖
thank you very much , im currently in kyoto and this video has helped me before and today, because it made my choice so fast and easy for waht i need, and you are rigth, the shop keepers speak a perfect english, and they are so helpful with everything. actually im going again to get some gear for my dojo senpais while im here! thank you very much Shogo sama!
One thing that I REALLY like about this video is that it doesn't seem like the sales person is trying to upsell everything like they do here in the US.
Thank you so much fir sharing. I’m learning English vie watching UA-cam and uploading UA-cam with Japanese and English subtitles. I learned from your videos a lot. Thank you
I love your videos so much, it's so cool and informative 🤩🤩 You should do a series where you react to samurai and warrior culture from media and pop culture, like Afro Samurai, Samurai Jack and Shinkenger. Itd be great to see what's accurate and inaccurate about these shows that people grew up with
A quick note to everyone outside Japan: 1. Take into consideration the laws of your country. In Europe for example, you will need to prove you "need" a Katana for martial arts purpose, you might also need to go through a background check, and lastly, most certainly the police will need to issue you with a carry license (needed for blades with over 15cm or something like that I believe it was). Even if you say, you don't practice Iaido and you just want to keep it as a exposition piece, you won't be able to get it through customs. 2. Also, and equally important: Taxes. Everything above 20 Euros will be taxed accordingly. So be prepared to put 20% of the full price you paid for taxes, and then some more for custom duties "fees".
Shogo , Thank you for another great video . This should help so many of us who want to begin Iaido training . Can you recommend any books or videos to help , those like myself , who have no training schools nearby ? Thanks again and please stay healthy .
Loved this video. Very informative and has literally all the information you could need. The only sad part is that the special pricing and gift seems to apply for in-store purchases. It would be nice if there was a coupon code for the website.
I need to visit that shop once as online they don't have a Iaito for my heigh (as i'm 191 cm tall and i need 2.60 shaku long blade).I moved to Japan for work and in my country i did some archery with swordsmanship as a way to just keep my body active and vent frustration. After i moved i didn't do any training as i can't really move any of my swords to Japan and i can't find any trainers there (i mean who would train in Japan Polish swordsmanship?) but i found nice Iaido Dojo and i started training there and i enjoy it quite a lot.
I appreciate your passion and attention to the details. Thank you very much for the video and now that you've already hit your goal of one million subscribers, are you planning to change it to a new goal for 2023? Best of luck to you in all of your endeavors and enjoy the rest of the year! 😁
First, I have thank you for given rebirth to my sleeping passion to Japan and samurai culture. 1989 I read Eiji Yoshikawan book "Musashi" and I love it. I tried learn much about Japan and samurais. But my life went different path for many decades and now when I found your channel , my old passion came back. I would like to see you make videos, what books do you recomment for learning more about samurai and japanese culture.
I have watched this episode with considerable interest several times. I believe I would like to begin iaito training as an exercise in mind and body. I have spent time examining the Tozando Online Shop but the terms being used on the website and those used in the episode. Also, the prices seem different than the overall price you talk about. Can you give me some advice on where to start with the Online Shop?
Ugh I've always wanted to study iaido but no schools around me in pei Canada as well now I'm too old. Does look very cool. I even have a hakama from studying akido back in the day
I wish I could come to Kyoto to visit the Tozando Shop. I was anyway thinking about buying a second Iaito and these special offers are looking realy good

Finally, someone explain me this shop. I was hesitate to visited this shop due to it's aura😃😃🙃. Now, I am ready to go there to hunt several items.
I ordered my first IAIDO set from the shop now. Thank you !
One thing that I REALLY like about this video is that it doesn't seem like the sales person is trying to upsell everything like they do here in the US.
Tomorow ill order my first iaito and it will be the custom one. I am so happy. Best regards from Serbia.
This video makes me want to train in Iaido even more😊
I found tonzado by accident yesterday, then your video today. I don't train Iaido, I train in Kali and Silat. I just admire Japanese blades.
Excellent introductory half hour. Very pleasant experience!
I will visit Tozando if ever in Kyoto!
Shogo is one of the few worthy of the art of the samurai
Iaido practitioner here, love the video
If I ever visit Japan, I will definitely visit Tozando.!
I didn't expect to learn the difference between 真剣 and 居合刀 today, but I did. Thanks, Shogo.
Thank you so much fir sharing.
I’m learning English vie watching UA-cam and uploading UA-cam with Japanese and English subtitles.
I learned from your videos a lot.
Thank you
I remember starting with Toryumon, it worked perfectly and never had any issues with it, I only replaced it because I needed something more advanced.
The respect within your culture is beautiful, I wish it was like that for mine
This was a wonderful video! 👍
I really loved the shop! It would be easy to spend several hours looking at all the wonderful merchandise. 👍😁
I love your videos so much, it's so cool and informative 🤩🤩
You should do a series where you react to samurai and warrior culture from media and pop culture, like Afro Samurai, Samurai Jack and Shinkenger. Itd be great to see what's accurate and inaccurate about these shows that people grew up with
Love it!
I'll be soon heading to Kyoto. Can't wait to get my hands on some nice iaitō.
I love that Tenryu sword with the matted Tsuba. I would want one like that, a nice traditional Iaito.
I wish I could visit Tozando in person. I would love to experience that!
A quick note to everyone outside Japan:
Shogo ,
Thank you for another great video . This should help so many of us who want to begin Iaido training . Can you recommend any books or videos to help , those like myself , who have no training schools nearby ? Thanks again and please stay healthy .
Thanks for this video Shogo. I live in Belgium and I just start learning Iaido. This will help me a lot
Thank you so much! Indeed, now we have even more reasons to go to Tozando! :D
You’re form is getting tight, Shogo!
Thank you so much Shogo !! 🙏🙏🙏
I found your channel by accident and it's awesome. Greetings from Poland😊💪
That is a lot for a beginner, but I understand why from this video! Thank you.
the special green iaito is so cool it would look great with both white and black dogi
I really like to listen to japanese. 💜 And a nice video again, Shogo. 💜
If I buy.. when I buy.. This store will have my business!
as always, an awesome video!
Loved this video. Very informative and has literally all the information you could need. The only sad part is that the special pricing and gift seems to apply for in-store purchases. It would be nice if there was a coupon code for the website.
For those wondering, the height guide is a recommendation and not a rule. My sensei, who is about 5'5" uses a 3.5 shaku sword.
I need to visit that shop once as online they don't have a Iaito for my heigh (as i'm 191 cm tall and i need 2.60 shaku long blade).I moved to Japan for work and in my country i did some archery with swordsmanship as a way to just keep my body active and vent frustration. After i moved i didn't do any training as i can't really move any of my swords to Japan and i can't find any trainers there (i mean who would train in Japan Polish swordsmanship?) but i found nice Iaido Dojo and i started training there and i enjoy it quite a lot.
amazing video !!! japan is perfect man
Shogo: Awesome video! Ganbare! Do your best/Keep it up! From Hillsboro, Oregon USA!
Loved this video. Wish I was in Kyoto because that all looked great. Thanks for posting this.
I appreciate your passion and attention to the details. Thank you very much for the video and now that you've already hit your goal of one million subscribers, are you planning to change it to a new goal for 2023? Best of luck to you in all of your endeavors and enjoy the rest of the year! 😁
Such a good idea to encourage beginners... Well done!
I'm 6' 1" which is just over 185 cm, so my blade would be 77.3 cm long with a 27.3 cm handle. Good to know!
Yes the second part of this shop 😭🙏
I have watched this episode with considerable interest several times. I believe I would like to begin iaito training as an exercise in mind and body. I have spent time examining the Tozando Online Shop but the terms being used on the website and those used in the episode. Also, the prices seem different than the overall price you talk about. Can you give me some advice on where to start with the Online Shop?
❤ Always interesting and with a lot off enjoy ! I hope to come in Kyoto and going at tozando shop!
Ugh I've always wanted to study iaido but no schools around me in pei Canada as well now I'm too old. Does look very cool. I even have a hakama from studying akido back in the day
