Spooky Abandoned 1870 Asylum, Virginia

- Come along today as we venture inside an abandoned Lunatic Asylum in the Woods of Virginia. This asylum was built in 1870 and was specifically designated for African American patients. This was unusual for the time as slavery and injustice for minorities still plagued most of the south. However, this place did not treat their patients properly and most were only able to leave in body bags. After operating for approximately 104 years, this place officially closed in 1974. Overcrowding was the primary issue at this facility as there were over 5,000 patients in a building with a maximum capacity of roughly 2,000 patients. This led to under-staffing and neglect for the proper care the patients needed. Many places like this closed around this time due to changing ideologies in the proper treatment of the mentally ill.

I used to visit the asylum in Petersburg Virginia on state road 36 often during my army enlistment between 2006-2009. It is the creepiest place I've ever visited in the 39 years of living
Such a sad and lonely place, it must have been horrendous to be a patient during those times with all of the abuse that was handed out. I would say it was the doctors etc that were the ones that needed to be patients there as they acted more insane than the patients themselves. Thanks for sharing. x
Sweet vid,I have a connection to this place. My grandfather was a lawyer and he represented patients and families of patients from this place,he told me he remembers sexual, physical abuse and medical mistreatment being common here. I've also explored this place a year or so ago, after I heard my grandpa's stories. He has a few pictures of this place when it was running too during his visits with clients.
Fascinating! I'm sure your grandfather must have dealt with some horror stories at that place. Its a wonder how it managed to stay open for over a century. Thanks for commenting!
I love how respectful you guys were in this building, such a rare quality in urban exploration these days, great video and great job
I wouldn't advise going there that place is still a running hospital and trespassers are seen as viable threats to security.
Hey I’m a new sub here. 🎉UA-cam found your video for me and I’m glad it did because it was very well done! Good job guys 🎉🎉 I really enjoyed it. What a sad and lonely decaying place with so many secrets hidden inside those walls. Thanks again for this explore ❤
I had never been around this place till I took a train ride a few weeks ago. I did not even know what it was but when I went to eat at a place near by I saw it and it sent my heart racing. I told my hubby I don't know what that is but the negative energy coming out of that thing is massive. I did not even want to be any closer to it. This is a horrible place and that ground is cursed. I hope yall did not bring home anything while you were there. It's another level of bad juju!
I live right by this and have been in it so many times!!!! I love this place but it’s so dangerous. I love this place
Where's it located
Where is this
New Sub here, I'm a VA native. Your channel I find very interesting and sad at the same. Im glad I came across this even tho Ima little late to the game. Stay safe happy and healthy ✌🏼
Amazing video loved every second!!!
Everyone:
Almost certain this is the old Saint Albans asylum/sanatorium in Radford, Va/Pulaski, Va.
We would sneak in at night as kids and run around freaking each other out. Pretty eerie place to be, but very cool.
is it? i lved there when it was open... it looks really different if this is the same place
@@korodwyer1270 where is it
I was at St. Albans this past Friday ,,,, this is not it .
it is NOT St. Albans .
Great explore, awesome display.
That was not a autopsy table that was actually where residents get bathe , I worked in a institution for any years and that’s just the way the tubs are made and they usually have a shower hose attached to the faucet.
Good explore bro.
All that lead paint ..whoa
The other thing with the holes on top was a med cart ,the holes were used to put cups of water in when giving out meds
This is so close to me..I remember seeing it abandoned as a kid and it gave me a creepy vibe...nice video and thank you for exploring it without taking or breaking :)
What is the address
where bro
Dude remimds me of that one clueless manager we all worked with @ one time or another..."Why are their books here"??? After seeing repurposed tape on the shelves...It's a HINT, genius!!! The hospital didn't remain one purpose throughout it's existance. The rooms were repurposed as needed @ the time...Imagine @ one time, the "smile room" was where they put patients after doping them up, so the staff could clean up their feces...
Still the creepiest place I ever explored. Is this a new video or footage from your previous trip?
Same here! I filmed this video about a month ago so this is one of the most recent videos I've posted actually. I had been there once prior but that was a few years ago.
What is the name of the asylum
where is it
Great vid! How did you get in? Thought it was completely closed
trying to go here soon how harsh is security?
Where exactly is it o used to go here but I have forgotten how exactly to get here
I wanna go there
Can you tell me where this is
@connor exploring did u run into any homeless people jw?
What place is this
Is this eastern or western state hospital?
Its central state.
9:55 No, it would have been about 46 years.
Wrong
Where is this?
Williamsburg
Wrong, this is in Petersburg. This is central state. Not eastern state hospital.
How hard was it to get inside? Should I worry about hospital security from the surrounding buildings?
I would like to do some paranormal investing at this location. Where is this at?
Do you have a crew
September 1975 = 45 years!!! Lol
Is this the one in Williamsburg? Which building has the tunnel?
Williamsburg is eastern state. This is central state
can you send me locations of these abandoned places in virginia?
Where is this building on google maps?
Does anyone know exactly where this is?
I bet $100,000 I could have this place ready for full use, occupationally acceptable, and livable in 18 months. The owners (if they're still alive) just left it to rot. I PROMISE you it still has value. And if people were truly smart, they'd take it over and refurbish it and have living spaces for all kinds of people.
The asbestos and lead remediation would be $$$$$$$$$$
The new facility is $457 million......opening in 2027. New building will be state of the art and the old buildings are being sold off in parcels currently.
Where is this place?
