When our small business sold in bazaars, we started with paper bags (similar to what groceries provide) and got lots of complaints from maldita customers. Shifted to plastic bag and not a single complaint. Sad reality

To think that once upon a time, the love song "Mutya ng Pasig" ("Pearl of the Pasig") was written about the same river. That Manila was once written about as a beautiful coastal city. That _Pandaka pygmaea,_ one of the smallest fish species in the world, were once so abundant we put it in our 10-centavo coins proudly, but we then filled in the rivers they were found in. This happened within a span of less than 100 years. Yet the NCR, much less the Philippines, still has no proper universal waste disposal system. Garbage cans are rare. There are no serious attempts at a national recycling program, other than superficial school projects. No legislation to reduce plastic usage in products. What legislation that exists aren't enforced. We don't even have proper parks in most cities. Our streets flood yearly with the sewers and drains blocked by garbage. And the slums grow each year, with the accompanying improperly-disposed garbage and sewage, because the government turn a blind eye to the housing problem. We failed, and yes I've lost hope in our government ever fixing it.
We literally vote for public officials who litter the streets with their campaign posters. It's laughable to think they would care about these issues.

Kudos to Featr for this video. Aside from single use plastic, we can also reduce usage of paper bags, plastic spoons and forks from restaurants. Whenever I buy things I hardly encounter the staff asking me where will they put the items that I bought (I guess except for the big stores) even if they can see me carrying a reusable bag. Our family orders food delivery from time to time. Most of the restaurants would send us plastic utensils even if we already said that we don't want plastic utensils.

Small changes of bad habits can also make a difference if applied at large scale.
I will never get the point of having soap or other household product being put in an additional plastic bag to keep it separated from food items when doing groceries. My wife told me it’s an old habit that makes feels the consumer well taken care of, as household items are not meant to be eaten, thus they should be kept away far from food… as if there wasn’t already enough plastic barriers between items…
Same craziness about fruits and vegetables being wrapped in plastics in grocery stores. Sure you get to see the price as everything is pre-weighed but come on, that’s another example of abusive plastic use, especially since fruits and vegetables are naturally wrapped in their skins that is pealed off anyway before consumption…

    • @arcticvoid518
      @arcticvoid518 2 роки тому +1

Individual change is not enough- There has to be a bigger change. In the grand scheme of things- if you’re a consumer using plastics is inevitable. One person is such a small part of the problem. We need to hold companies accountable.

Plastics can be converted into diesel, or a base oil that can be used to make other plastics/chemicals. Pastics can also be converted into building materials.
Households can have a rubbish-bin dedicated for the collection of Plastics.
Such plastic recycling plants require a lot of energy. Maybe we can use co-generation; or in the furure, SMRs.
You'll have to educate the public regarding this terrible problem. Where possible, we have to replace Plastics with glass or paper.
Synthetic fibres are another problem. We may need to return to natural fibres like wool, cotton, linen.

Wow Erwan! your platform just got bigger. Waste management is everyone's responsibility.
Some of the ways I think we can help is by:
    - Not opting for plastics in most food containers - restaurants/food kiosks should use durable wares for rewashing
    - Using biodegradable containers (banana leaves/coconut leaves / repurposed paper etc) for take out packaging
    - Giving rebates to consumers who could bring their own containers and for the return of the tumblers/containers they use in packaging.
This is a social problem and it takes a community effort to resolve this.

Think it's important we don't forget just how little the developed world wants to help the developing world. The developed world sells their plastic to developing countries. It's not just about us as the litterers. There is also burden on the developed countries to reduce producing plastic waste as well. Paul Graham had a very disingenuous thread a couple months ago trying to blame only the developing world for plastic waste in the ocean. Still got receipts if anybody wants

Thanks for this narrative about our plastic problem. My takeaway after watching this is don't make a "plastic" turn into a waste. It must be usable in multiple times until it incinerated chemically, yes until it became almost a biodegradable material. We must eradicate single-use plastic. I am not trying to be dogmatic here, saying don't use plastic at all. Dah! Even our appliances at home and daily essentials has elements of plastics on it. Others, like containers, boxes, and some tools are made of plastic. It's just we need to use it wisely without harming our environment. Both the local governments and the people must act as one to implement this ordinance and make it our way of life.

I live in an island where landfills is limited or seems not sustainble so caring today will benefit us islander.
I hope that even the government focuses on solving tge poverty in the Philippines they will also strengthen the value of environment not only of creating laws, ordinances and rules but utilizing it as people benefits the real value.

This is a great video cause it showcases the issues that are true to how Filipinos actually view waste management and segregation as useless cause they don't know how the waste is actually processed afterwards. Because we often assume that they are mishandled and are often mixed together when thrown in the landfills anyway, which unfortunately in some cases may be true.

We need more of these videos to raise awareness. Perhaps next time a video showing alternatives (It may be challenging to do this without showing company/manufacturer names), so consumers know that they can still enjoy the functionality a plastic material comes but there are a few in the market which are in fact made with biodegradable materials. There’s cassava bags, coconut sponges, recycled papers… and there are recycling centers too where you can take your recyclables.
For women, sanitary pads is a number one pollutant. I read somewhere where it says 1 pad = 5 plastic bags. Other women need to know that there are alternative pads that decompose in 3 years compared to the common ones in the groceries which can take 50 or more years.
Sadly when I post something like this type if content in my FB, only about .2% of my friends list show interest 🤷🏻‍♀️😔

We need to hold companies accountable! They keep blaming it on the consumers!

Please include the faceshield since it's plastic made too and also additional waste for us especially we are prone to floods.

Everything is recycled here in Switzerland, from PET to batteries, papers, green waste separated, no land refill at all, the rest will be incinerated. We should follow such waste management but it cost a lot. Incinerators are very expensive.

Starting from using less and lesser plastic and bringing tote bags in shopping and buying goods is already a big step!

We cannot eliminate “single-use plastic” at a large scale bcoz almost all families here in the Philippines are dependent on “tingi-tingi” and we need also to consider that. And also the problem is that the need to solve the problem ay ipinapasa sa mga consumers, what about the producers?... To solve the problem, hindi ito kaya ng iilan lang, the government, private sector, and consumer need to act as one for us to make it. Kung hindi natin ito masosolusyonan, we can’t change the irreversible effects of irresponsibility.

Kudos to erwan at sa team niya .
