A lot of rappers do this. Especially newer artist. It just helps the work flow better and it gives the vibes of the bedroom recording set up. It's less pressure on the artist and more efficient for the engineer be next to the artist for live feedback and communication purposes. I'm surprised they only singled out lil Durk for doing this when most studio sessions I've seen was done this way.
They can hear the artist through the mic.

visual feedback ( move this vocal to the left or right in protools) they'll be able to do that on the spot vs having to walk over to the engineer. It's really a preference.
