It's not good to compare these 3 legends - Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab , Sahir Ludhianvi sahab & Shailendra sahab . But personally I feel Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab to be the best among all ( personal ) opinion . I have many reasons for my justification :- Firstly , its not an easy task to understand the sentiments of all music directors & work accordingly . But Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab was enough capable to understand what type of lyrics will suit better in the music director's composition ( also the scene situation ) & accordingly write hit after hit songs . Many of the top singers of his times has many many hit numbers written by Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab only . Secondly , it's not an easy task to simultaneously write songs for films & at the same time , writing Ghazals , Nazms , Shayaris etc. for poetry , both being successful . Besides , there are many other reasons why I admire Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab . It was his song "Ae Dil Mujhe Aisi Jagah Le Chal..." that brought Talat Mahmood sahab to recognition in Bollywood as a playback singer . His songs from 'Teesri Manzil (1966)' helped Rahul Dev Burman sahab to establish as a very successful music director of Bollywood . His songs from 'Janta Hawaldar (1979)' helped singer Anwar sahab to establish further as a successful playback singer . Many music directors like S. Madan sahab , Usha Khanna'ji , Rajesh Roshan Lal Nagrath sahab , Anand-Milind sahabs had delivered hit songs from their very first Bollywood film as it was a belief that he could give hit lyrics for any new music directors & playback singers . Majority of the most famous songs of singers especially like Kishore Kumar sahab , Mohammed Rafi sahab , Asha Bhosle'ji , Geeta Dutt'ji & others had hit songs written by one & only Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab . That is why , for me , Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab is the best lyricist . 🙂
Majrooh Sultanpuri is the greatest lyricist of all the time as he had the longevity to last from the 40s to the millennium which is an impressive feat regardless.

Sahir is so head and shoulders above Majrooh that I don't even want to debate that. But that's not why I'm writing this comment. The word in Bade Mian Deewane song that you're alluding to is teddi - locust - and not dandy. Locusts are known to swoop upon paddy fields and wreak havoc . That's how Joy Mukherjee is urging IS Jowhar to sweep beautiful women off their feet.
Mr. Hussain, Thank you so much for your response. Based on your explanation I have no hesitation in acknowledging that it seems I may be wrong about the use of the word dandy. I still keep hearing dandy because the theme of the whole song is about how to develop a swag. That said, my contention is not based on this single expression but a whole body of Majrooh Sultanpuri's work. It is essential to bear in mind that I am talking about a Hindi lyricist in this context and not a poet, which incidentally both excelled at. Hindi cinema lyrics as you well know are a different ballgame altogether. Nevertheless, this is just a matter of fun opinion and not a deeply scholastic conversation. It is lovely of you to take the trouble. Cheers.
Thank you, Mayank ji! As I said I don't want to be a part of this debate which for me is a nonstarter because Sahir , in my view, is far far superior to Majrooh both as a poet and as a lyricist. But still, let me add something here. I think among lyricists who have a considerable body of work, only Shakeel can match Sahir in quality, range and depth. In the fifties and the sixties, Indian cinema had a number fantastic lyricists. Shakeel and Sahir, for me, top the chart by a big mile.
Mr. Hussain, Fair enough. For me, in the end poetry is not and must not be quantifiable. Actually Hindi cinema has no peers in producing song writers of such extraordinary merit anywhere in the world. This was a charming back and forth. Cheers and my best.

The point on Shailendra saheb is actually great cause the more I pay attention I get more from such simple words and so is the case with Sahir Saheb and Majrooh Saheb has played the longest innings with incredible success. Just enjoy them all and don’t fall into the trap
Great Shailendra........

Sahir was better.
Gapoochi Gapoochi gum gum..was no less frivolous song penned by Sahir
मेरा मानना है साहीर बहोत ही अच्छे थे ;लेकिन क्वालिटी और क्वोनटीटी दोनों को मद्दे नझर मजरूह उनसे काफी आगे थे ।

Wese to golden era me sabhi best they, but ek poet hona accha hai agar woh poet k sath sath lyricist hai to bahut badi baat hai jo shakeel badayuni saheb me thi, shailendra, rajindra krishan sabhi acche lyricist they
Only SD Burman and RD Burman have worked with all three Sahir Shailendra and Majrooh!

again, majrooh did not use the word 'dandy' but used the word 'todi'. In british times indians who were chamchas of british were called 'todi baccha'

Film lyricist cannot be poet. He has to write in character's language and according to the situation. Not his own ideas. Majrooh was/is greatest film lyricist. Sahir was poet
Superb analysis. His USP was to write on the metre, according to the character.
The worst song Sahir ever wrote was "Ab chaahe sarr phhutthe ya mathha" In the 1972 movie DAAG. I never expected him to go as low as Anand Bakshi level of third class lyrics. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Sahir apne fan ka admi tha. Vo ek hi tha.
Anad Baxi was the best

Not agreed at all.. Majrooh Ji was the most versatile lyricist of all time, Sahir Ji was not as versatile as Majrooh Ji.
The man who wrote jaane walo zara (Dosti), mai ri kase kahun (Dastak), ik din bik jayega (Dharam Karam), hume tumse pyar kitna (Kudrat) and many more.. all are different from one another, so it is difficult to identify Majrooh Ji's songs.... That's why his writing was so versatile
@resaa78 Majrooh Ji has the phenomenal ability to write the lyric on the composition of the tune on the other hand Sahir Ji demand the music composer to compose the music according to his lyric, may be this could be the reason that music maestro like Naushad, Shankar - Jaikishan, Ghulam Mohammad had never used Sahir Ji's poem.... Majrooh Ji's versatility can't be compared with anyone.
@resaa78 According to you, what you consider a "special talent"? Do you have any parameter to judge which is special and which is ordinary talent? Please describe.
