Money is meant for survival and every bit of cash should be put back in case of a emergency. You can still find money to have fun with. The beach or carnival or both. I went to a beach long time ago and there was also a carnival nearby. It doesn't mean you can't have fun every once in a while. Never hurts to take a break and have some fun. First things come first.

Marie should have bought her home free and clear with that money rather than starting a candy shop. She could have planted a garden, had chickens, maybe some goats, this was the thirties she wouldn't have had to worry about building codes or HOAs telling her she couldn't have livestock.

If you have kids, you need life insurance so they're not homeless and have needs met...however, getting more than needed is dangerous. I used to be a HUGE insurance person. My agent told me, "never be worth more to someone dead than their love for you " I then kept enough to pay off my house and a trust for my kids with my oldest brother as executor.
