It is a little tricky to replace pads on a flute, but with a good attitude like that, I am sure you can do it. Let me know if you need any help or advice.

These are fabulous videos; I have a book that explains what to do, but there is not enough about why. I watch this video specifically to find out how to iron the pads and why it was necessary; the book just says to do it, but there is no demonstration and no explanation of why it is necessary. I found both these, but so much more. Thank you so much, Art; I have no-one nearby to help me get started, so your videos are an essential part of my learning.

I'd love to see another version where you do a few things to help first time repairers: you work a little more slowly and carefully ; you have the camera very close and focused on the key you as working on; You position hour hands so they are not blocking your work from the camera; Name the exact product and all relevant specs of each item you are using on each key, and for every task. For example, instead of saying, "use whatever thickness you need," tell us exactly what thickness is needed for ever key.) Thanks! These things would really help beginners!
Thank you for posting this video. Thanks to you, I was able to find the adjustment screws on a cheap bass flute I got from china a decade ago on ebay, and now it's mostly playable ^^ Just need to replace the pads, and it should be good to go I hope =]

Hi Arthur, great videos. I have a frustrating problem with my flute. The D key is closing with the F# key, the F key and the E Key. Therefore upon pressing the E key, the D, E and F# keys are closed. Also when pressing the F key, the D, F, F# and Bb keys are closed. I cannot work out how to fix this so that the D key only closes when it should ! Help is much needed ! Thank you.

I got it pretty good so far but could improve it a bit. I recently got a nice old Yamaha student flute. It works quite well. I took it apart just to clean it (was very tarnished). The pads and adjustments seem good. There are about four small dents in the head joint but not too bad. That connection is a bit oblong but it seems to go together well. I need to make that feeler gauge like you’ve got so I’ll follow that link. I didn’t know about seating pads. I bet that works for saxophone too. I thought they just developed the grooves through use. Thank you for this!!! I was thinking about picking up my old school flute again and happened across this video. My flute has now been de-constructed and is ready for some TLC. I feel confident after watching this video that I can repair my old companion.
It looks like a pain in the 4rse but I will give it a go on the old Boosey & Hawkes Emperor E Flute I recently bought from a charity shop. lol. One of the pads is missing and a few of the others are not in perfect condition lets say. I don't even know how to play the flute yet so I am not familiar with the way the instrument works, but I'll figure it out.
What type of glue do you use? Do you put glue all over the pad, up to edges or do you just use a few drops in the center? Are you liberal with glue or sparing?
Can you provide a list of all parts? Names,sizes of pads, the names and sizes of plastic peieces, the type and sizes of cork, the type of felts, the glue, and polishes,what type of oil? ..everything? Thank you.
I use phosphoric acid on brass instruments. I would not recommend it for saxophones because it may react with some types of needle springs. Also, saxophones usually do not get dirty enough to justify using it on them.
I try to make my videos so that people who do not want to watch a super long video can watch the basics and those who want to learn more can watch other videos.
