      Honestly bench arch (when it wasn't limited) was the only thing that made an outrageous difference in how much weight was lifted. People overestimate how much more weight you can lift with sumo if you have good leverages for it. I believe people like Tyson Ridenour would still be elite deadlifters if they never switched to sumo. Sumo just adds some more weight to the bar so thats why they use it

    As a conventional puller, I train sumo and conventional side by side for a few reasons. One of those reasons is that sumo deadlifting works some different muscles including strengthening your hip flexors, which help with a lot of other athletic movements, and in my case, helped me learn how to walk properly again after a motorcycle accident that crushed my femur in between by bike and a car. The hip flexor strengthening from sumo pulling helped me become a fully functioning lifter again, so in some ways, even as a conventional puller I owe my life to the sumo deadlift lol

    I attended a powerlifting meet recently (I don't know which federation) and asked one of the officials what he thought about sumo vs conventional, and if there was any plan to contest the two methods separately. He told me that their studies showed that one wasn't any easier than the other, as it took the same amount of force to break the weight off of the floor. I'm new to this, but seems to me that, yes, the same force is required to break the weight off the floor, but that sumo doesn't have to travel nearly as far after the break before the legs and back are "locked out". Also, with a narrow grip wouldn't the bar flex up more (lock out comes sooner) than with a wider grip? Maybe the difference in grip widths and bar flex is negligible, but I would think the ROM to lockout would DEFINITELY be different with the two styles, and that conventional would require considerably more movement and work....

    • @CronosXIIII
      @CronosXIIII Місяць тому +3

      People get caught up talking about ROM. The difference in ROM doesn't particularly matter. What matters is the sticking point in the lift. The hardest point in the lift. If you can get through the hardest part of the lift, you can complete the list. The remaining ROM doesn't actually matter. If you had to double the distance the sumo deadlift had to travel, it wouldn't actually make the lift any harder. Because if you're able to get it off the ground, generally you're able to complete the rest of the lift far easier.

    • @x2lazy2die
      @x2lazy2die Місяць тому

      lets first seperate the ultra low rom sumos from regular sumos.
      lifts are limited by peak force outputs and not by having the bar move a few inches more. humans are able to sustain a contracting for much longer than required for the lift easily. its less of a rom issue as it is being in a more advantageous position for force output, which, for most people isn't too far off either way. but then u get into these ultra wide stanced people who's begins their lifts with their hips in such an advantaged position and =/.

    The problem I have is that it's well established sumo is easier biomechanically but you seem to argue otherwise sometimes. The data shows it's far more popular in 93 and below and above 93 you can clearly see that people like jesus simply don't have the ability or mobility to perform the sumo movement pattern effectively. Those that can, like Jamal or Grigsby or Colon seem to gap their competitors.
    Aside from that, even if you argue they're the same on a stiff bar, it cannot be argued that they derive equal advantage from the deadlift bar. The fact that sumo disproportionately benefits from a deadlift bar is in itself a huge (separate) issue. Sumo is toughest off the floor while conventional is toughest around knee level or lockout so sumo obviously derives huge advantage when a deadlift bar is used as it effectively cuts the peak difficulty spot of sumo but not the peak difficulty spot of conventional.

      Where do people get this mobility argument? What data says 100kg lifters are unable to have mobility? You can bring up someone enormous as a straw man, but I promise most lifters over 93kg either have or could gain the mobility to do sumo. Do many people see a correlation between weight and sumo vs conventional, and start acting like that means sumo is objectively easier always because of some nonsense they add. Please become data literate before trying to use data to support what you already believe. (This is a comment about a lot more than lifting. The world needs to learn how to interpret data, because the vast majority cannot)

    • @senorgeese
      @senorgeese Місяць тому

      @@brianfox340 what is this nonsense babble? Lmao? Of course it's common knowledge when you put on hundreds of pounds of mass your mobility will suffer as compared to without it. It should be obvious a big SHW isn't somehow magically contorting his arms around his powerbelly to pull sumo stance.
      Also, aside from that heavier weight classes correlate with taller heights. That means distance between barbell and floor is a smaller overall percentage of the overall ROM. Therefore, this is just making the opposite argument as the deadlift bar, an argument you conveniently ignored, where SHW are often on the far end of unoptimal leverages to where breaking the floor with sumo is harder rather than easier.

Fact of the matter is, if your statement of it adding hundreds of pounds was a fact as you state it, where are the 500+ KG sumos? Are you telling me that people who would be capable of getting higher scores would think that sumo is "cheating" and therefore don't do it, while they don't seem to mind using a suit if allowed? Sumo doesn’t add 100s of lbs. This is straight up misinformation. I know plenty of guys, both lighter and heavier, who are much stronger conventional. I know many who have very little strength difference either way. I know absolutely no one who pulls more than 100lbs more sumo than conventional.
      The worst offenders are using straps and a whippy bar - not competition standard - to take full advantage of the narrower grip in a sumo deadlift. If you think guys like Jamal or Tyson wouldn’t be elite deadlifters either way, or that guys like Jesus Olivares, Andrew Hause, or Eddie Hall could even come close to their conventional pulls sumo, you’re lying to yourself.

    900 lbs is 900 lbs. I've rack pulled 700, and respect the fortitude and strength required to pull a heavy weight, no matter how someone does it. Everyone whines about it. But Jamal also pulls 900 conventional? How weak of him?

      Sumo doesn't use as much back, and that's why small men and women use sumo to get PR's. They wouldn't be able to do it conventional because their back isn't strong enough. It's especially prevalent in women.

      @@a-a-rondavis9438 alright. I'll bite. Stefi Cohen pulled high 500s at 130ish sumo. Within rule sets and pulling to her body type. It's an objectively impressive. My argument is and always will be, heavy weight is heavy and context is also a consideration, but 900 solid ass lbs or 410 solid ass kgs is freaking remarkable no matter how its done. And in different weight classes, and different ROMs, it doesn't necessarily change. Just awesome is awesome. We shouldn't be looking for reasons to tear down. We should be stoked for the person and build up.
