HASIRASHI DEVI (1911-1993) was an indomitable artistic genius who enrolled herself in an art college at the age of 50, having been mentored by both Rabindranath Tagore and Abanindranath Tagore when she was young. She was born in Gobardanga (now located at North 24 Parganas) in West Bengal, in 1911, to Sushilabala Devi and Gopal Chandra Bandyopadhyay. Her sister, Prabhabati Devi (Saraswati), was a novelist, and cousin, Hiranmoy Bandyopadhyay, an erudite scholar of Tagore's writings.
She was obsessed with art from a young age, reluctant even to go to school: When other girls aged eight and nine years played with dolls, she would spend hours in the attic, painting, or cogitating on whether to apply brown or black paint on a face. Marriage at 13 served as a spur to her growth as an artist and liberated her. She started visiting the Tagores of Jorasanko with her sister, where she experienced the efflorescence of her artistic talent under the influence of Rabindranath and Abanindranath. They were affectionate guides to Hasirashi--even though Rabindranath had once torn apart one of her paintings, and the very next moment, asked her, with a smile, to sit next to him and learn correct technique. At the age of 60, she recollected how fortunate she had been to have this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Numerous exhibitions of her works were held in Calcutta, Delhi and Bombay, she won awards, but even as such success came, there was tragedy: the demise of her daughter and husband. It immobilized her as an artist for a few years. She was able to pick up her paintbrush again. Throughout her career, she took up different themes, including nature's beauty, religious figures and mythological subjects, done with a contemporary edge. To capture India's tourist sights, she used the Japanese wash technique of which she had gained mastery though her favourite medium was watercolour. In 1960, she obtained admission into Government Art College, Calcutta, comparatively late in life, where she took training in craft, batik and sculpture. In her own writings, she has pointed out how it was important to use mythological themes in a contemporary context.
Hasirashi Devi was also skilled in designing book covers. She wrote several books, including Rajkumar Jaago, Bhorer Bhairabi, Dai and Manusher Ghor. Her paintings were regularly published in contemporary Bengali literary and cultural magazines, Bharatbarsha, Jayashri, Mohammadi, Bichitra and Masik Basumati. Abanindranath Tagore had commended Hasirashi Devi, in 1941, for both her literary and artistic skills, urging the editors of magazines to use her talents and that it would be "a tremendous misfortune" for the country's art colleges to not participate sufficiently in giving wide exposure to "her skilled artistic creations". Prominent artists and authors of Bengal--Mukul Dey, Kazi Nazrul Islam and Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay, among others--had many words of praise for her. All the more pitiful was it therefore that this gifted artist had to live out her old age on a meagre allowance from the state government.

হাঁসি রাশি দেবীর শেষ জীবনের কোয়েক বছর আগে ওনার সঙ্গে সাক্ষাৎ হয়,কতো কথা বলেছিলে।শুনে মুগ্ধ হই।স্কুল কোয়াটার একট ঘরে থাকতেন,নিজে চোখে দেখা দুপুরের খাবার দিয়ে যেতেন এক জন ডা. দিলীপ বাবুর বাড়ি থেকে।
শেষ জীবন টা ওনার এভাবে থাকাটা ,দেখতে কষ্ট হয়েছিল। নমস্কার জানাই আমার এই গোবর ডাঙার মহীয়সী নারী কে ।🙏🙏

আমার ঠাকুর দাদারা ছিলেন দুই ভাই । ছোট জন গোপাল চন্দ্র চৌধুরী আমার ঠাকুর দাদা, আর বড় জন মানে আমার বড় ঠাকুরদা হলেন বিভূতি ভূষণ চৌধুরী যার স্ত্রী প্রভাবতী দেবী সরস্বতী ( হাসি রাশি দেবীর দিদি) । সেই সূত্রে এই প্রতিবেদন আমার ও আমার গোবরডাঙ্গা গৈপুর গ্রামের চৌধুরী পরিবারের কাছে অত্যন্ত গর্বের ।।

ওঁর সম্বন্ধে বিশেষ কিছুই জানতাম না। তবে স্কুলে পড়াকালীন নাম শুনেছি।শেষের দিনগুলো বেদনা দায়ক। ডাক্তারবাবু পাশে ছিলেন এটা অবশ্যই খুব ভালো লাগলো।

সত্যি অনেক অজানা তথ্য জেনে ভালো লাগলো। গোবরডাঙ্গার মহীয়সী নারীর কথা জেনে গর্ববোধ হচ্ছে। তার শেষ জীবনের কথা জেনে খারাপও লাগছে।

ওঁর নাম শুনেছি ভাষা ভাষা মনে পড়ে, কিন্তু কে তিনি, কি করতেন, জানিনি কোনোদিন। আজ ওঁর কথা শুনে খুব ভালো যতো লাগলো, ততটাই কষ্ট হলো শেষের দিনগুলোর কথা শুনে।
