I am not sure it's that dangerous as long as the tools are clean and there's reasonable skill and hygiene. I was just talking to my optometrist about this last week mentioning these videos and she said "Beautiful". One reason for this procedure and why I asked is Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) which affects Asians in much larger numbers than others. These glands are located in the edge of the eyelids and secrete oil to help tears stay on the eye. MGD leads to "dry eye". I felt I was getting that a bit, so I had her check my Meibomian glands and "express them" (meaning apply pressure to get them to give out oil. If clogged, it's like whiteheads on your skin.). She said only my upper right lid has a slight MGD, so that's good. Anyway, this cleaning along the rim helps prevent MGD which, again, is very common among Asians. My optometrist told me all her patients with MGD were Asian...
Here is an example of a doctor expressing the Meibomian glands. Quite interesting. I got something in my eye once and it was just gushing tears. I couldn’t get it it. So I had to go to urgent care. I was holding handfuls of tissue on my eye cause it wouldn’t stop watering. Finally the doc put numbing meds flipped my eyelid back and I had a tiny piece of mascara there. All that for just a tiny speck of mascara.

Such procedures was obviously passed down for hundreds to thousands of years from China and if people in the past were fine after, makes no sense that professional practitioners can't in this day and date with improved tools & equipments available. It is named "eye-cleaning" but honestly it's simply drawing eyeliners repeatedly on your eyelid/waterline (which is not sensitive for me) so that it triggers your tears to flush out all the "dirty" filth/makeup residue thats stuck in your eyes. Really, it aint that scary. Besides, it'll be worse if they are wearing gloves etc. Anything that reduces the friction of their grip on tools increases risk of them damaging my eyes. As long as they washed and sanitised properly its all fine with me since their fingers are not touching my inner eyelids at all.

I have allergic rhinitis and my eyes gets very itchy. I suffer for it everyday so I usually get that long thingy sometimes less than ten a day or more. Ngl its so satisfying i can literally feel it from the bottom 😝

Someone in a different comment explained it (much better than I can), but the main gist is that the glands inside the eyelids? that secrete oil and stuff to help keep the eyes moist and tears flowing can get clogged and cause eye dryness. This procedure removes any blockage, and could not be done by just washing your face. I could be reading it wrong as well, I am not an expert but any means, but it would likely take a professional to remove any blockage causing eye dryness either way
in my tradition, eye cleaning is normal. we usually use coconut husk, twist it to make a O ring shape for eyelid and the tip will be use to clean the tear gland.

No. Chinese eye cleaning is surprisingly comfortable. Vietnamese eye cleaning, on the other hand, is quite uncomfortable unless you get used to it.
