Hmm... It never really WAS answered how Steven came to be. If I had to guess, or make a story for it, I'd say... Hmm... Okay, so Rose studies Biology to shift herself a "human" female reproductive system. After the, er, Zygote is formed (Maybe she shifted an egg? At this point she may have mental (or, Gemtal, haha) control over said egg, like the bird monster or spike monster, or even Centipeedle had control of their little "babies," and she fused it with... Well, the zygote was created. It probably formed attached to Rose's gem at this point. How this works... Idk, but it's fictional, so it doesn't matter too much. Anyways. Baby Steven forms around her gem. Rose may be able to "feel" his first sounds and stuff, and he would have been able to feel her thoughts. When he was born, Rose poofed. She lost consciousness forever, but the remnants of her mind in Steven's gem still remain, just as her powers do, and it's this that gives Steven the ability to connect w/her. All of this is purely speculative, though. Idk what actually happened- nobody does!

This episode really caught my interest in Blue Diamond, I thought she was going to be exactly like Yellow based on Garnet’s story, but here we see her speaking to a human about how to live with grief and rescuing him from what she thinks is a doomed planet. One clue as to what happened when Steven was born: In the Lion III video, taken shortly before Steven was born (i.e. in the summer) Greg has normal skin tones. Then in the 3GAAB flashback, just a few months later and in winter no less, he has his characteristic "farmer's tan". I submit that Rose poofed at the moment Steven was born, transferring her gemstone to Steven, and permanently pinking Greg in the process since he'd undoubtedly be right next to Rose. Since GAP have appearances different from those of Story For Steven and We Need to Talk, they may have also been caught up inadvertently in Rose's blast and poofed as well. According to the official story, Rose Quartz "shapeshifted a womb". Rose Quartz had to do a good more than that to create a human/Gem hybrid. BTW, there's nothing "insidious" about the Zoo. I think that the Crewniverse through Garnet believed that the word was simply synonymous with "evil", when it's supposed to indicate a subtle, corrupting form of it. If the Zoo was meant to create pod people to replace influential living humans on Earth as a way for Homeworld to take over, that would be insidious.
Rose had the power to create life from existing organic material (like Steven did with the watermelons and such) so basically what happened was she and Greg did what humans usually do, and Rose made Steven inside her. So yes, she was pregnant for a time, and through that time, Rose and Steven did exist simultaneously and shared the gem. But in order for Steven to be born and be able to live his life, she had to stop existing. So once he was ready, she just sort of fused with the baby. If she REALLY wanted to, she could've just made him fully human with no gem, and that way she could've continued existing cuz then she wouldn't have had to relinquish her gem But she wanted him to be a gem that could experience what it's like to grow up like a human. A being of both worlds. A truly unique person.
Three Gems and a Baby: GAP were each trying to understand what Steven was through what they understood about their own powers: Amethyst thought that Rose had shape-shifted; Garnet that fusion was involved, and Pearl could only focus on Rose's-now-Steven's gemstone, stuck to some disgusting pooping organic matrix. Steven's Dream: There were two theories current when the episode came out: one, that Steven was connected with Blue Diamond through his gemstone's power, or that Blue Diamond herself had the power of projecting empathic emotions onto other Gems. Garnet and Pearl are really doing Steven a disservice. Things seem to be regressing between them in certain ways. Blue Diamond's second, and first actual, appearance made her seem so much more sympathetic than Yellow Diamond. I could never imagine Yellow lowering herself to speak to an organic creature; and while Blue kidnapped Greg, she did so for what she thought was Greg's safety, as she was certain that The Cluster was about to hatch and destroy the Earth. Blue Diamond's VA is Irish singer Lisa Hannigan, with the result that her UA-cam videos are peppered with MY DIAMOND !!!-type comments. Blue Pearl seems to be the epitome of the perfect Pearl as originally intended, far more civil than her yellow counterpart (or even our Pearl, for that matter). Blue Court really does seem to be Best Court. Adventures in Light Distortion: Part of me understands Steven's hasty decision, since Greg is really both his mother and father...but not taking a few minutes to listen to Peridot almost got everybody killed; this is like going back to early season one Steven. And I didn't like the callback to the Ruby Squad abandoned in space.
It's largely unclear, the creators confirmed that she shapeshifted a fully functional reproductive system, but the exact how of her giving birth is not confirmed for... obvious reasons. My personal theory is that she developed Steven in her body just like any other pregnant person, keeping her gem embedded in him as he grew, then when it was time to give birth she poofed, leaving the newborn behind with the gem already in him. That's just my thoughts, don't take it as canon

I have a theory about how Steven was born, and it also explains Greg's sunburn. This flashback (when Steven is a baby) is the first time we see Greg with sunburn. He never had it when he was with Rose, even when she was pregnant with Steven. If you look at the shape of the sunburn, it isn't in the shape of the clothes he wears now. It's in the shape of the clothes he wore when he was younger. That means his sunburn is permanent, and he has had it for 14 years. It was somehow caused by Steven's birth. Whatever happened, I assume it was a bright flash of light, and Greg was too close and it burnt him.
I think that they were all correct in a way. I think Greg's DNA fused with Rose's gem DNA equivalent and she shape-shifted a womb for that little fetus hybrid to grow in. In order for that gem hybrid to exist in the outside world it needed a gem itself so Rose decided to give up her form so that Steven could have a gem to live. Her form basically became all his gem powers but his human form is a mixture of Greg and Rose's DNA.
Without spoiling anything - the ending music _is_ going to continue changing from here on out and they're connected like how Love Like You was beforehand, I'd definitely recommend taking a second to listen to the credits if you notice that it's different
That girl who is best friends with Greg I think she gave him one of the eggs and then he used his baby gravy and rose body was just an incubator for the baby to grow so the baby has a woman’s egg her incubation spot and then his baby making gravy and then they fused after nine or 10 months into Steven and I guess rose formed into a baby well not exactly she turned into her original diamond or gym and then this is how Stephen was here

Baby Steven forms around her gem. Rose may be able to "feel" his first sounds and stuff, and he would have been able to feel her thoughts. When he was born, Rose poofed. She lost consciousness forever, but the remnants of her mind in Steven's gem still remain, just as her powers do, and it's this that gives Steven the ability to connect w/her. All of this is purely speculative, though. Idk what actually happened- nobody does!
I remember reading a theory once that Rose shapeshifted a womb. Then, she & Greg did the do & she legit started growing Steven like a regular pregnancy until it was time for him to come out.
However, instead of her giving birth, she basically just poofed & in her place was Steven.
I've also heard it explained that Gems are like computers & when Steven was born, the Gem's information was overwritten to be Steven's identity instead of Rose's.

I think it’s the fact that they (the crystal gems) didn’t understand what was going on when Steven was born. They thought that Steven IS rose but in reality rose is technically gone. But tbh in way, Steven is somewhat like a bubble.
This episode really caught my interest in Blue Diamond, I thought she was going to be exactly like Yellow based on Garnet’s story, but here we see her speaking to a human about how to live with grief and rescuing him from what she thinks is a doomed planet. Really she’s my favorite of the Diamonds because of how much more considerate and merciful she is in comparison

This is what Rebecca Sugar had her characters say about Steven's creation, from her book "Steven Universe: Guide to the Crystal Gems" (2015):
PEARL: Rose Quartz was determined to bridge the gap between Gems and humanity. We are not humans, but we can create an amazingly accurate simulation of a human body via shape-shifting. This can allow us to experiment with human experience; we can make lungs and experience breathing, or a stomach and experience eating. Rose Quartz wanted to experience birth.
GARNET: But Rose Quartz wanted to create a *human* child. One who could learn and grow, with the capacity for love that comes so naturally to human beings.
PEARL: A Gem *is* their Gem. Our physical forms generate from our Gems. All the information that makes us who we are is sourced in the Gem itself. To give that information to a human child, Rose Quartz was able to integrate her information with the DNA of Greg Universe by dissipating her physical form to allow all of her Gem's information to become half of Steven's self.
GARNET: Not unlike a Fusion, Rose disappeared to create an entirely new being, with all of her self integrated into half of his self. Steven is, in essence, a Fusion of love, like me!
Don't forget that the gems body are made of light with mass so when they went warp speed, they're bodies lagged behind.
So about how Rose became Steven, this is just my speculation on how that happened, but Rose shape-shifted the parts to become pregnant, since they were connected by the umbilical cord they shared energy. Then when Steven was ready to be separated, and again only speculation, she poofed which put her gem into Steven and formed together with him. Again. Just speculation on my part

One clue as to what happened when Steven was born: In the Lion III video, taken shortly before Steven was born (i.e. in the summer) Greg has normal skin tones. Then in the 3GAAB flashback, just a few months later and in winter no less, he has his characteristic "farmer's tan".
I submit that Rose poofed at the moment Steven was born, transferring her gemstone to Steven, and permanently pinking Greg in the process since he'd undoubtedly be right next to Rose. Since GAP have appearances different from those of Story For Steven and We Need to Talk, they may have also been caught up inadvertently in Rose's blast and poofed as well.
According to the official story, Rose Quartz "shapeshifted a womb". Rose Quartz had to do a good more than that to create a human/Gem hybrid.
BTW, there's nothing "insidious" about the Zoo. I think that the Crewniverse through Garnet believed that the word was simply synonymous with "evil", when it's supposed to indicate a subtle, corrupting form of it. If the Zoo was meant to create pod people to replace influential living humans on Earth as a way for Homeworld to take over, that would be insidious.

Rose had the power to create life from existing organic material (like Steven did with the watermelons and such) so basically what happened was she and Greg did what humans usually do, and Rose made Steven inside her.
So yes, she was pregnant for a time, and through that time, Rose and Steven did exist simultaneously and shared the gem.
But in order for Steven to be born and be able to live his life, she had to stop existing. So once he was ready, she just sort of fused with the baby.
If she REALLY wanted to, she could've just made him fully human with no gem, and that way she could've continued existing cuz then she wouldn't have had to relinquish her gem
But she wanted him to be a gem that could experience what it's like to grow up like a human. A being of both worlds. A truly unique person.
Three Gems and a Baby: GAP were each trying to understand what Steven was through what they understood about their own powers: Amethyst thought that Rose had shape-shifted; Garnet that fusion was involved, and Pearl could only focus on Rose's-now-Steven's gemstone, stuck to some disgusting pooping organic matrix.
Steven's Dream: There were two theories current when the episode came out: one, that Steven was connected with Blue Diamond through his gemstone's power, or that Blue Diamond herself had the power of projecting empathic emotions onto other Gems.
Garnet and Pearl are really doing Steven a disservice. Things seem to be regressing between them in certain ways.
Blue Diamond's second, and first actual, appearance made her seem so much more sympathetic than Yellow Diamond. I could never imagine Yellow lowering herself to speak to an organic creature; and while Blue kidnapped Greg, she did so for what she thought was Greg's safety, as she was certain that The Cluster was about to hatch and destroy the Earth.
Blue Diamond's VA is Irish singer Lisa Hannigan, with the result that her UA-cam videos are peppered with MY DIAMOND !!!-type comments.
Blue Pearl seems to be the epitome of the perfect Pearl as originally intended, far more civil than her yellow counterpart (or even our Pearl, for that matter). Blue Court really does seem to be Best Court.
Adventures in Light Distortion: Part of me understands Steven's hasty decision, since Greg is really both his mother and father...but not taking a few minutes to listen to Peridot almost got everybody killed; this is like going back to early season one Steven. And I didn't like the callback to the Ruby Squad abandoned in space.
It's largely unclear, the creators confirmed that she shapeshifted a fully functional reproductive system, but the exact how of her giving birth is not confirmed for... obvious reasons. My personal theory is that she developed Steven in her body just like any other pregnant person, keeping her gem embedded in him as he grew, then when it was time to give birth she poofed, leaving the newborn behind with the gem already in him. That's just my thoughts, don't take it as canon

I have a theory about how Steven was born, and it also explains Greg's sunburn.
This flashback (when Steven is a baby) is the first time we see Greg with sunburn. He never had it when he was with Rose, even when she was pregnant with Steven. If you look at the shape of the sunburn, it isn't in the shape of the clothes he wears now. It's in the shape of the clothes he wore when he was younger. That means his sunburn is permanent, and he has had it for 14 years. It was somehow caused by Steven's birth. Whatever happened, I assume it was a bright flash of light, and Greg was too close and it burnt him.
I think that they were all correct in a way. I think Greg's DNA fused with Rose's gem DNA equivalent and she shape-shifted a womb for that little fetus hybrid to grow in. In order for that gem hybrid to exist in the outside world it needed a gem itself so Rose decided to give up her form so that Steven could have a gem to live. Her form basically became all his gem powers but his human form is a mixture of Greg and Rose's DNA.
