The US Army went to Europe in World War 1 with few if any domestically built field-guns/howitzers. What little they had was considered by the other Entente powers to be woefully inadequate, so for the most part US Infantry divisions were kitted out with French Artillery which is why the US was license building so many French guns between the wars and why most US guns were influenced by French designs after the Great War. After the war the US Army conducted a program to modernize its field artillery park. The old French 75 guns (known is US service as the M1897) were placed in storage (the guns were later re-used on the M3 Gun Carriage) and the US Army decided to increase the infantry's artillery caliber from 75 to 105mm as the Germans were also doing. The US Army also decided to invest in heavy-but-modern road sprung carriages with the decision that infantry artillery would be 100% motorized. Most Armies were not able to do this in the 30s so large numbers of older guns had to be retained for horse towing such as in the Wehrmacht. (The Soviets attempted to plow ahead with motorized artillery parks despite lacking the trucks and as a result lost many thousands of guns to the Germans during Barbarossa. Later in the war these newer guns began to pay off as the Allies and Russian industries finally provided enough trucks to move everything.)
These modernization programs led to the M1 howitzer, M3 Regimental Cannon, and superb M1A1 155mm "Long Tom". US Army field artillery in general trended toward motorization and sophistication, the carriages and guns themselves were thus usually quite heavy and conventionally designed with long split trails. They would not have been remarkable guns were it not for the qualities of US industrial sophistication which produced the remarkable ammunition these guns used, the complicated VT Fuze and highly destructive White Phosphorous round. Late in the war US field artillery was notorious for breaking up attacks all by itself-even by Panzer Corps.

A little thing that’s interesting to know is that the M1A1 howitzer with no shield is an 82nd Airborne unit that is manned by paratroopers, so there’s a bit of a hidden bonus having a better equipped crew should the gun itself be knocked out and the crew survives.

I watched a interview somewhere where a WW2 105 howitzer gunner was talking about the pro's of the gun, and he said they were ridiculously accurate. He recalled having a call in for "fire for effect" and the effect was hitting a tiger repeatedly from over a mile away.

I use that 155mm howitzer in conquest, I line 3 of them up and can wipe out tanks, cars, infantry, within like 2 shots even at max distance as it’s accuracy might be some of the best for its caliber and power
    - Amazing offense gun, always bring one and a gunned ammo truck, as it eats ammo insanely fast, and the reload is crazy for this gun size and power and just ACCURACY!

To put in perspective: the 400 meters of the best guns in real life is considered a bit still effective to try to shoot at targets with rifles, if you are a good shot I think it's totally fine. Note I'm not complaining, I'm just a ww2 nerd and an indie dev, so I took notice of this kind of stuff, the game is fun as f.
