  • Last time we looked at completing a UK self assessment tax return as a self employed person. Today we’re looking at what’s generally involved if you’re a company director. In this example I’ll show you what I do to tell HMRC about my director salary and dividends. In the example I’m using an annual salary of £12,000 and £20,000 in dividends. This is for the 2021/22 tax year, due Jan 2023. As per usual, I am not an accountant. Always used a good accountant.

This is a great video. Got me though my return, adn Im rubbish at this sort of stuff. BUT I clicked 'Yes' on the 'rent a room' thing, which I believe makes rental income under £7k tax free. Tet the figure appears taxed in my tax calculation. Any ideas? Thanks

You really need to have an accountant involved with a limited company. Do you run payroll? If not then you might not have a PAYE number and therefore wouldn't fill in the 'employment' section of Self Assessment. But check with your accountant.

Hi i have a public sector job and am also a limited company director with my wife as shareholder. I do not take any salary from the company so I do not have P60 or paye reference no. My question is when I am filling self assessment and I want to claim expenses like mileage etc how can I do that? Without filling the PAYE reference the form runs into error and I cant complete self assessment.
    Thanks in advance
    Ash

You're probably best checking with your accountant when you get your company accounts prepared. I've seen some accountants add mileage and other expenses to the directors loan account and repay themselves from there, so it never hits self assessment. I think there's a few ways of handling this depending on personal circumstances though. 👍

People always say "find a 'good' accountant" but they never tell you how to.
