  • We have 10 days to explore Kangaroo Island. Welcome to part1 KI has All Terrain vehicle tours, spectacular scenery and nature - not to mention some interesting history. It pretty much has the lot.
In part one of our KI trip we take our Zone van and the Defender to the Vivonne Bay campground and spend several days exploring the more rugged south west coast of Kangaroo Island. We head to Flinders Chase National Park to visit Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, spending well over an engrossed by the antics of the seals never mind the other scenic attractions. After lunch from the back tray of the Defender we did the short Lighthouse walk getting a sense of the isolation of the Light House keepers and their families.
Check out the steep path from Weir's Cove where the supply ship only came every three months if weather allowed, and all the stores and any passengers had to be winched up the cliff from the jetty.
Despite the blustery and damp weather we decided to check out the Seal Bay conservation area - where the resident sea lions were bunkered down trying to sleep until the blowy weather passed. It was good, but we felt it might be a bit expensive for families. We decided then to head the rural centre of the Island to find the Parndarnus Baker for a warm baked lunch and hot coffee!
One the highlights for us was the Buggy Adventure tour at Little Sahara. It was a fun couple of hours with Joel our guide, with a great mix of learning about the seven local environments of KI - all represented here at Little Sahara, with the fun of the dune buggy ride. Another group who had booked the same tour had to cancel, so Paula and I got extra personal attention.
Little Sahara Adventure Centre was great tour - we had a blast. Check it out.
And hungry from our fun ATV - dune buggy - weathering "8 seasons in a day" ;-) we headed back to the Vivonne Bay General Store to try out their famous signature dish - the Vivonne Bay Whiting Burger!
But did mention that Kangaroo Island was big? We learned very quickly 10 days still wasn't going to be enough, but we decided we'd give it a good shake and this episode we covered off some of the things you can do in the South West based somewhere like the Vivonne Bay Campground.
Did I mention the Koalas? Everywhere!
Next Episode we pack up and head to Emu Bay to base ourselves for some of the delights of the Northern part of KI, before spending a couple of nights at Penneshaw and visit some of the attractions on the Eastern end of KI before heading back to the mainland.
But ferry fares are very expensive and as good as KI is, we ask ourselves the question - is it worth the expense of bringing the car and van across to KI?

Cafe de Fender. It was certainly the best cafe available at the lighthouse at Flinders Chase National Park that day! Thanks for watching and love the comment. Merry Christmas

Hey - wow, congrats and what a lovely spot to get married. It’s a great place. We knew it was large but until you visit you don’t really get the feel for it. The ATV tour was great fun. Geez it was a blustery day, sunny patches, then some rain and hail, but windy ! despite that, we had a ball. The only thing about KI is the value proposition of taking the van or making it part of a lap. It’s definitely a terrific destination. We will punch out the second part during the Christmas New Year period. cheers Dave and Paula

It’s a definite on my list of places to go.

At least a week. We spent 10 days. The challenge is the cost of getting the rig there vs the time you might need to spend to make it worthwhile. We reckon 2-3 weeks would give a great combo of seeing and experincing all it has with some relaxing down time as well - while being the minimum to make the $950 ferry cost plus the campground costs. Shorter than that and it’s probably more cost effective to leave the van on the mainland and rent a place and car l. ATV was really good. Merry Christmas.

Good video guys, I don’t think we will make it to KI ourselves, so it was nice to see it vicariously through you 😃

Thanks guys. It’s a challenge. It’s an expensive diversion on a lap. Terrific place and we loved it but weighing up the question is it worth it to take the van over? We flip a coin on it each time we think about it. In our case because we could get short notice ferry tickets (less than a week and we jagged a space) it helped us decide whether or not to head toward the Birdsville or Strzelecki tracks. I suspect we will finalise our view when we finalise the next vid 😂. Merry Christmas.

It’s a tremendous place. We think it’s fantastic. This week and next week we just enjoy it. But, the big question we are asking is - with all the wonderful places you can go on a lap and the big expense of getting the rig over on the ferry - is it worth it. You need to spend a big chunk of time to get the value - so it’s probably a destination in itself but maybe not best for a year long lap or half year half lap. So hard - because, as you see, we loved the place. Thanks for watching again and love the comments cheers

We loved it. It is a bit of an expense and time investment. When you get a chance check out part 2 where we ask os it worth it on a lap. But we wish we’d been able to spend longer - so no question it’s a terrific destination. Happy New Year!
