Yes!! Thank you for this, I feel like it can never be said enough. We're all just people dressing up in costumes, we should give ourselves permission to have fun!!
I’m working on three cosplays/four outfits at the moment. Bloom from Winx Club in her fairy form plus her dark fairy form, Will in her Guardian outfit from W.I.T.C.H and Sophie from Huntik: Seekers and Secrets. All have short skirts and I’ve added a few inches onto the skirts to make them a little longer. For both Bloom and Sophie I plan on wearing both shorts and tights under their skirts. Bloom and Will’s tops are short crop tops and I added length onto the bottom to make them little longer so I don’t risk showing my bra when raising my arms and plus I’m not used to wearing crop tops of any kind.
Just throwing this out there, on the Mulan topic...technically speaking, you wouldn't be cosplaying China's Mulan...you would be cosplaying Disney's Mulan. It's an entirely different character, just like all the characters that Disney takes from history or fairy tales. No one is offended or even bothered by anyone cosplaying Thor or Loki...because they are not the Thor & Loki of Norse Mythology & Religion, they are Marvel (& again, Disney's) Thor & Loki. If it is wrong or rude or uncomfortable for certain people to cosplay certain characters, then the accusations & chastisement should be aimed at the corporations that stole & appropriated a character for their own use...not at someone who enjoyed a movie and just really wants to play pretend as a character they think is badass/sexy/powerful/fun/etc.
Fair enough. And I can certainly see and respect that sentiment- it’s why I don’t have any issue seeing non-Asian mulan cosplayers. I just draw the line there for myself personally
I love videos like these! I've been cosplaying for a fair time now so these aren't typically directed towards me, but you can always learn something new! At the current moment I am finishing up Alice from alice in wonderland and then I'll do toon Zelda from Legend of Zelda, which will be a milestone for me because I've always wanted to do an elegant princess cosplay and it will be the last cosplay I make before going to college.
I remember dressing as one of my favourite characters, the female version of Ash from Evil Dead, and (as I'm right handed) I put the chainsaw on my left hand which seemed to anger a lot of men, not every man was upset by it but everyone who was upset by it was male. Which made me laugh because switching hands was the least of the changes I made!
Currently finishing up my Ciel Phantomheim costume and planning out the filtoria from shield hero. Thank you or your pointers the other day. Greatly appreciated
All of my mermaid shell-tops are sewn to a skin-colored (my color) sports-top, that way they are also swimmable and cover up my scars. My next cosplay that I'm making is a miko-version of the Internet browser Firefox.
At the moment I'm working on a maid outfit for a friend of mine. :) But the next big project for me is a remake of the Strawberry Dress but make it bees. I already have the yellow fabric and tull. And the bees will be embroideries.
All excellent points. For my Rita Skeeter cosplay, I think the only difference that I will make is to go with a little bit more of an a-line skirt rather than a slim pencil skirt. I believe that it will suit my ample frame better and make me have more confidence when wearing it. Thanks so much for another wonderful video. Take care.
Danke! Well said. As a 5'2" female, confidence and creativity is everything! I encourage younger cosplayers to not be afraid to try new ideas. Prime example, 1 of my mains for years now is a Pyramid Head with a latex bdsm theming.
Love this! Started sewing a couple years ago but haven't actually attempted a cosplay yet. Did recently make a list of ones I would like to complete and hope to dive in this year
One of my favorite cosplayers is @Mishamai. And she's from Texas like me! Woo woo. Check out her Sailor Mars Cosplay. My favorite anime character at the moment is Deku. #cosplay. Great video kirilee
I’m hoping to start working on a Mileena cosplay from MK9. I like the fact that she’s wearing pants 😅 Edit: let me elaborate - I'm to body conscious for the one piece or bandages. I.like the pants look for style and comfort.
I am working on a historically inspired costume based on a design worn by the character Chrisjen Avasarala from The Expanse. I share Chrisjen's potty-mouth, I am afraid, but I do not have near her fierce courage and exquisite timing. I obviously do not share the cultural background of the character or the incomparable actress, Shohreh Aghdashloo, so what I plan to do is take concepts from the outfit- the blocks of color, the theme of the jewelry and translate it to something for a brisk winter day in 18th Century North America. Go to the future, take a costume, and twist it on a trip to the past.
I'm working on 2 cosplays at the moment- one is a female version of Crowley from Supernatural, the other is my own original character based around Supernatural
I plan to do an Oc cosplay and a Ningguang (Genshin Impact) cosplay. I also have in mind to cosplay the human Version of kumoko from "so i'm a spider, so what!" But i still thinking of what Kind of Fabric i should choose 😅
I'm mending one of my cosplays at the moment, lest's just say, Bayonetta shows quite some skin, so the costume it has a big opening in the back, and a smaller boob window, which means that I should use without a bra... Well fuck that, because I used the "flesh color fabric" trick lmao, I regret nothing~ I also use shorts anytime my cosplays have some skirt because hell no, I'm not showing panties ever!! Another point I think is worth mentioning, when making the cosplay, one should always consider that the costume has to be worn almost all day on conventions (well not now with the lockdowns and stuff) so, for example, my Bayonetta costume is cute and I love it, but using gloves make difficult to use thephone on selfie times, and, probably the worst thing, I never though I had to pretty much undress completely when using the bathroom... (I'm working on a solution for this as well) Yeah, is kind of a stupid thing to say, but it happens more than you can imagine, so I think is a must to think of every possible situation, and work on a solution before the problem ever happens, so you'll have a better time when the costume is complete :D
I like your comparison of other people encouraging you to cosplay a character with people encouraging you into a profession: both are (almost always) meant with love and kindness and are lovely, but they should absolutely NOT be the only reason to do that cosplay or go into that career.
i would also recommend cosplaying characters that arent cosplayed a lot. junko enoshima from danganronpa is the most cosplayed person in the world so i prefer to steer away from junko and more to characters not cosplayed a lot like izuru kamakura. i feel that if you do this people will see you as unique and probably ask you about the character and then you can introduce someone else to your highest kin or favourite character
I disagree. Cosplay a character you like. It doesn’t matter if other people are also cosplaying it - it means you can make friends with those who are cosplaying the same character
I agree with you about Mulan, she is so iconic Chinese from, looks, dress, traditions, and era in history. As to Anime characters - they may be Japanese but so many of them do not look Japanese (Well the more modern ones are tending to make some characters more true to form but still, there is a plethora of ones to choose from 😄) Thanks for the "Rules" - this goes well with the rules for underage cosplayers and things we all need to remember (Especially not being a Jerk)
I mean its okay to cosplay someone as a different race. I'm white but I've always wanted to cosplay as ansem the seeker of darkness. I know I can't change my skin color, and those darker than me can't niether. Its how we are born, and we should just enjoy who we want to dress without people calling us "ra-ce-i-st" for being born with different skin color. Well, no one will stop be for cosplaying as ansem or xemnas. I like those villians and I don't care about their skin color, all that matters is who people are and not by looks
Brand new to cosplay so I’ve kinda been worried that there was an unspoken rule that you have to create your entire costume yourself. Some of the costume I’m wanting to do for an upcoming Comic-Con will be homemade, but the majority of the costume will be other things I’ve purchased online. Just curious if it’s frowned upon to mix & match things to create a unique costume?
No way! Cosplay is still cosplay if it is bought or mixed part made part bought. The only thing is if it is put into a competition, that is mostly for self made cosplays unless you are purely aiming to win a performance award
Quick question! Is it okay if you don't have the props for the character you want to cosplay? I want to cosplay as Wolfwood from TriGun but I don't have his cross gun that he carries. I don't know how to make props so is it okay if I still cosplay him without his weapon?
I think it is worth being mindful but it is not always 100% true. I was in my late 20s when i cosplayed someone was about 8- but it was all good and I won a competition.
Once again, this your advice needs to be broadcasted everywhere! Am I like 30 cm taller and 25 kilos heavier than the character I chose for my first serious cosplay? Yea. Was my dress sloppy and not to the right 1840's pattern? Oh yea. Did I suffer through impossible shoehunting because what looked good was not right according to the movie portrayal? Yep. Still, I wore and upgraded that Jane Eyre cosplay for several years worth of cons and loved it. And then I went and made a completely different cosplay - the Flufflepuff pony. And that was a great success as well. Whatever it is, listen to Kirilee, have fun, don't be jerks and just try it. It's great!
There is a difference between annoying characters/ villains vs. Offensive characters like a nazi or potentially cosplaying a character in a wheelchair when you are fully able or black facing etc
For a couple of years I've planned (but yet to start) a Mother Earth cosplay. I plan on having a cloak and around the bottom of the cloak I want to have the names of as many Earth Goddesses as I can, preferably using the script of their native languages it that's possible.
At the moment I'm making my second Aloy cosplay from Horizon Zero Dawn, Ellie from The Last of Us Part 2 and Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2 💕
I currently have kind of a cosplay block and I feel really happy to hear that play again. I am so caught up in "getting it right" that I couldn't work on my current costume for months now. I think I need to be reminded of that mindset that it is meant to be fun even if it sounds so obvious. Thank you 💕 I also totally get the Mulan sentiment. I made her "casual dress" for a photoshoot some years ago and it somewhat did not feel right so I was happy to sell it to an Asian cosplayer who could fill her role so much better 🙂
Yes!! Thank you for this, I feel like it can never be said enough. We're all just people dressing up in costumes, we should give ourselves permission to have fun!!
100%! If you aren’t having fun, then you are missing the purpose of a hobby

@Ahvi Carter is say I'm about 50% done with the dress
Nice
I am making a wearable version of Elizabeth Swanns pirate outfits. So the first sailor one, the runaway one and the pirate king
Oh I love that one
