I really need to work on my 6/8 time signature, especially fills!! I think i having not played a 6/8 song in a while has took a toll... a couple of my fills were pretty distasteful.
6/8 may seem like a rather common time signature, but i guess my playing really shows that its an odd time signature to me after all. An interesting thought i gleaned from JP Bouvet on being comfortable with odd time signatures is working through the grid with the time signatures just like i did with 4/4, and not playing the kick on every other "1". And of course working on a larger repertoire of fills...
BUT... I love how the congregation just belted out the song with such earnestness.

do you use a metronome for most of songs you play? during the softer parts of the song, i find the band always slows down despite how hard i try to maintain the same timing as the metronome

Yes I do! In fact Ive been learning to use a metronome for all the songs. So i compleeeetely understand what you're saying. Hahaha. If there's anything I could say to help it would be
      1. As far as possible try to give the count in to songs. If it starts on time, you have a much better chance at keeping the song on time.
      2. Where not possible, use the metronome to get a gauge of where you need the tempo to be at. Then when you come in try to speed the song up(or slow down) VERY gradually until you reach the tempo, then you can continue playing with the click.
      3. In the quiet moments, try to keep time with something in the background that doesn't stick out too much. Like a shaker, or even on the ride on the off beats or something like that. In general I try not to leave the band without any form of time keeping for too long, because yes, they WILL slow down.
      4. Lastly, but probably my MOST IMPORTANT tip, is that you need your band to agree to want to play to a click. They need to agree that this is the right step forward to help improve your bands sound. I can't stress how important that is. When I first started trying to use a metronome, the biggest oppositions sometimes came from the band itself because they felt they didn't want to be so rigid. But a while ago, my worship team restructured into fixed bands, and it was something my band, Pursuit, decided to do tgt. So everyone made a conscious effort to follow me. That REALLY changed things. So even when I leave them with no time, they know that it's their responsibility to not drag the song too. And it has become so much easier to
You can kinda check out the other songs in my pursuit play list to get a clearer picture of what I mean :) Hope this helps!
(it's going to be a steep learning curve, but i firmly believe that this is the right step forward in musicianship, especially as a drummer. But most importantly, don't lose sight of the reason for excellence - worship!)

+Chung Siyang Bethesda Bedok-Tampines Church (BBTC).
BTW, there was one last scenario that i forgot to mention which was the one in this song! Hahah sometimes you can afford to just come in a bit faster from when you come in. It gives an uplifting feel, but it doesn't always work. So yea. hahaha. Glad I could help! Feel free to subscribe ;)
